Party With A Plan SJSU Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention Committee
Responsible Hosting: When throwing a party try these TIPS Never serve alcohol to people under 21. Be honest. When inviting guests who are known to drink too much, tell them that drinking and driving is unacceptable at your party. Get their agreement to find alternate modes of transportation. Have plenty of non-alcoholic drinks available. Don t encourage or force guests to drink alcohol. Provide plenty of food so guests won t drink on an empty stomach. Arrange a designated driver for those who are drinking alcohol and have taxi numbers available. If preparing an alcoholic punch, use a noncarbonated base such as fruit juice. Alcohol is absorbed into the blood stream faster when it has a carbonated base. Close your bar 90 minutes before your party is over and serve a great dessert treat and coffee, tea or soft drinks. Activities and entertainment should be scheduled to keep the focus on celebrating a special occasion - not drinking. Karaoke, party games and board games are socially acceptable and fun! 2

DUI Under 21? California has a zero tolerance law. The legal maximum Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is 0.00% for drivers under 21. It is illegal for those under age 21 to drink, buy, attempt to buy, possess or transport alcohol. FINES & FINES & REQUIREMENTS* REQUIREMENTS Possible Additional Fine Requirements Fake ID $250-1, hours- 6 $ months in jail MIP (minor in possession) $250 One year loss of license Purchase for a minor $ hours of community service DUI $480 1 hour in handcuffs Tow and storage $150 4 hours in jail of vehicle Court assessment fee $ days freeway trash pick up DUI victim fund $ weeks of alcohol classes Alcohol education class $375 2 days at DMV (3-12 months) Increase in insurance $ years probation Cost of saving a life Priceless Never drink and drive *Partial list. Over 21? The consequences of a FIRST misdemeanor DUI conviction can be serious and can haunt the offender for many years. 6
Bottom line - It s up to you and you have to make a decision you ll be proud of the next day. RESPONSIBLE Alcohol Consumption Pace yourself when you drink. Sip slowly. Have no more than one drink with alcohol per hour. Know the standard drink sizes so you can count your drinks accurately. One standard drink is 12 oz. of regular beer, 8-9 oz. of malt liquor, 5 oz. of wine, or 1.5 oz. of 80-proof spirits. Keep track of how much you drink. Don t drink on an empty stomach. Avoid letting others handle your drink and don t leave it unattended. Use your sober designated driver to get home (that doesn t mean the least drunk person). Sorry, Not Tonight So, you find yourself at a party where alcohol is being served. What do you say if you ve had enough or are choosing not to drink. Sometimes, a simple No thanks works well. Here are some other ideas. Say No thanks : I m driving tonight; or I m the designated driver; or It s a bad combination with the medicine I m taking. Remember your goals: Not tonight, I have to work tomorrow morning; No thanks, I have a lot of studying to do tomorrow morning. Be honest: I don t drink or I m not drinking tonight. Hold a cup filled with soda, water or juice. 3
Alcohol Poisoning: Passing out is NOT sleeping it off!! SYMPTOMS: ABCDE s of Alcohol Poisoning Awake - Try to wake the person up. If they don t wake up, turn them on their side. Breathing - Check for slow or irregular breathing. Cold and Clammy - Check if they re cold, clammy, bluish or pale. Do NOT leave them alone! Emergency - If you suspect alcohol posioning, stay with the person & have someone call 911. ** If a person is suffering from any one of these acute alcohol poisoning symptoms without immediate medical attention he or she may be at risk of dying or suffering severe brain damage. ** CALL 911 FOR HELP** What s worse, someone busting up your party or someone dying? 4
Alcohol Poisoning: WHAT TO DO and HOW TO GET HELP if someone is SUFFERING from ALCOHOL POISONING CALL 911 immediately- your friend s life may depend on it. (If you re on campus, call , they ll respond faster.) Don t leave the person alone. Turn the person on his or her side to prevent choking on vomit. It is always better to be safe than sorry. A cold shower to sober them up = BAD IDEA. The shower is slippery enough when you re sober! Focus on your friend s health, not on keeping them or you out of trouble. Do not give them anything to eat or drink. FYI: DON T leave the person alone If you think that your friend could have alcohol poisoning CALL 911 they will send an EMT out to assess the victim for FREE! 5
