6 INSECTS (INSECTA) Mosquitoes can transmit disease organisms to people and domestic animals. Most mosquitoes are active during twilight hours and at night. However, around the home, the mosquitoes that breed in discarded containers and standing water are active during the day. Mosquitoes need water to complete their life cycle and can breed in almost any source of water. The Wood Wasp a native to Europe, Asia and northern Africa is rarely a pest. They kill pine trees and sometimes several other types of conifer trees by introducing a toxic mucus and spores of a toxic fungus when the female lays her eggs through the bark and into the sapwood of the tree. Flies carry diarrhea illnesses and germs and bacteria from contaminated sites to clean sites and food. Female flies may lay up to 150 eggs at one time. The stingers are full of a necrotizing alkaloid venom that causes red itchy inflamed pimple - like bumps to form on the skin. These ants all sting in unison causing major skin damage when they are accidentally provoked. Fire ants also destroy crops, pollinating bee populations and even some bird species are threatened by them. American Cockroach adults have wings and will occasionally fly. However, they are awkward fliers and prefer to run when disturbed. Cockroaches have been shown experimentally to transport a number of pathogenic bacteria and viruses on their legs and bodies. They have been found to carry the pathogens that cause tuberculosis, cholera, leprosy, dysentery, and typhoid, as well as over 40 other bacteria (like salmonella) or viruses that can cause disease. Thus, cockroaches, through their nocturnal feeding habits, represent a serious potential health problem. Their presence should be eliminated or diminished in dwellings and food establishments. 5 14

INSECTS (INSECTA) Bed Bugs There are actually several species of "bed bugs" but the species found most commonly in the U.S. is Cimex lectularius. They are very tough to eliminate when they have invaded someone s home. Black Widow Spiders are venomous spiders found in places that are not frequented. Such as: under your house, a closet, gutters, well pump covers and anywhere you re going to reach without thinking. Brown Recluse Spiders are equally venomous, causing tissue death in the area around the bite. Both spiders usually bite when accidentally provoked such as inside of shoes, fabrics or when tangled in webs under houses. Wolf Spiders are similar to brown recluse spiders which are poisonous. They usually live in dark areas and are active feeders. Silverfish are primitive insects who prefer to live in places that are dark and humid. Although they are generally harmless to humans they can contaminate food and destroy books. The female deposits clusters of her eggs in cracks or crevices. They can live up to eight years. Traditionally, municipalities use Malathion or Permethrin (Kontron 44) in their ULV fogging applications. Malathion itself is a low toxin, but absorption or ingestion by humans metabolizes into Malaoxon which is more toxic. Permethrin is extremely toxic to cats and aquatic life and both products are harmful to our rivers, lakes and streams. 8 CARPENTER BEES & TERMITES Carpenter Bees burrow into wood, forming a series of chambers, typically 6-8. Each chamber is provisioned with pollen (mixed with regurgitated nectar) then a single egg is laid and then capped with a disk of wood pulp. The chamber is sealed and the adult does not return. Adults have been reported to use abandoned tunnels and other cavities to store pollen before hibernation. Termites are social insects, living in large colonies and are very destructive to wooden structures in the south. Colonies include the queen, workers, soldiers and nasutes (individuals that squirt noxious goo from their nozzle-like heads.) Four families of termites in the southern US are: Hodotermitidae, Kalotermitidae, Rhinotermitidae and Termitidae.
