Beyond the Emerald City Marjorie C. Dobratz, RN, DNSc. Professor University of Washington Tacoma

Background The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) BSN standards (2009) expect undergraduate students to acquire knowledge related to the appraisal and integration of evidence to practice (Essential III). The AACN Master s of Education standards (2011) state that graduate students are to apply research outcomes to practice (Essential IV).

Purpose With a professional need to translate researchbased evidence to practice settings, the purpose of this presentation is two-fold: Describe the process of how undergraduate students work in groups to develop an evidence-based practice (EBP) protocol. Relate the steps that graduate students undertake to develop EBP protocols.

Nursing Program Background The University of Washington Tacoma (UWT) shares accreditation with the UW School of Nursing. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program opened in 1990 to serve placebound registered nurses in the South Puget Sound area. The Master of Nursing (MN) Program started in 1996 and offers three curriculum options: Nurse Educator, Healthcare Leadership, and Communities, Populations and Health.

Nursing Program Mission The Nursing Program supports the interdisciplinary mission of the campus. The program focuses on the discovery and dissemination of knowledge that promotes health within an ethic of social justice. The curriculum fosters the integration of teaching, inquiry, and service through a community of learners. Partnerships with the community provide environments for knowledge building.

Nursing Program Philosophy The purpose of university-based undergraduate nursing education is to prepare professional nurses whose practice is informed by theory and research. The BSN enables a graduate to practice from an evidence base. Graduate education denotes the critical appraisal of theories and the extension of the processes of inquiry for the translation of evidence to practice.

Nursing Program Provides off-site education to BSN students at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. Offers an ADN-MN option for high achieving BSN students. Structures classes in late afternoon, evening, and one-day format to accommodate working nurses. Offers a joint EdD-Nursing doctorate (began Summer 2013) and started a Healthcare Leadership Program in 2009.

Undergraduate Process Work in groups of 5 to 6 students assigned by their practice area (ICU, long term care, medicalsurgical, etc.). Learn to identify a problem, provide an overview of the evidence, appraise the level and quality of the evidence, summarize the evidence, and then make practice recommendations. Learning takes place over a 10 quarter week in a course titled: TNURS/THLEAD 403: Introduction to research in nursing and healthcare.

Steps in the Evidence-Based Practice Learning (EBP)Process Part I What is the EBP question and what are articles were selected to answer the question? Part II What was the sample, population, setting, intervention or what occurred to answer the question? Part III What was the strength and quality of the evidence? Part IV Based on the evidence, how were the studies alike, what is the summary of the findings, and can they translated to practice?

Undergraduate Learning Week 1: Research overview. Complete group survey on practice area, years of practice, ability to search databases and work as a group member, and any other limiting factor. Instructed to start thinking about a practice problem/issue or EBP topic. Groups formed on CANVAS and students notified before next class. Week 2: Library Search Session. Groups form, search potential topic, and identify 3 to 4 research articles on the problem.

Undergraduate Learning Week 3: Ethics and Protection of Human Subjects. Research versus quality improvement. Students go to UW Human Subjects Division website and complete questions for ethics quiz (10 points). Topic for group EBP to be selected by Week 3 (Part I). Week 4: Research Theory and Concepts: Questions/Hypotheses, Conceptual and Operational Definitions with group work to review theoretical questions from published research articles. Time allotted for group work to refine and clarify EBP topic.

Undergraduate Learning Week 5: Quantitative and Qualitative Research Designs. Four articles on EBP topic due with Part II questions answered (taken from Table 15-1 in *Boswell and Cannon). Take in class quiz (#2) on theoretical concepts(10 points). Week 6: Measurement, sampling, data collection. Quiz #3 on research designs (10 points). Feedback to groups on four EBP articles. Group work on research articles.

Undergraduate process Week 7: Holiday (Veterans Day) Week 8: Levels of evidence and critique. Quiz #4 on measurement, sampling, data collection (10 points) Group work on appraising levels and quality of evidence with feedback from faculty** (Part III of EBP due). Week 9: Groups work on EBP project and preparation for presentation. Instructor available to meet with groups on EBP project. Individual research critiques due (20 points).

Undergraduate Process Week 10: Group presentations of EBP protocols with brief overview of problem (Part I), four research articles (Part II), summary of findings, strength and quality of evidence (Part III), and practice recommendations (Part IV). Table 15-1 completed from Boswell and Cannon (2014) completed and turned in along with research articles (25 point grading sheet). Peer evaluation completed for group participation in EBP project (10 points allotted). Course Evaluation
