3 Teachers Law School January 17-18, 2013 The Trial Lawyers Section of the Florida Bar is proud to present the Teachers Law School on January 17-18, 2013, at the JW Marriott, Orlando, Florida. This program is designed for high school and middle school educators with the purpose of providing attendees, through a variety of presentations and workshops, the tools necessary to assist students to better understand and appreciate the value of our legal systems as well as the important roles that systems play in our lives both at home and at work. Unfortunately, recent studies demonstrate that only a minority of American high school graduates know the three branches of our government. We feel it is important for America s future leaders to learn about the legal rights and responsibilities each citizen has as a result of the work of our Founding Fathers and those who followed in their footsteps. Texas attorney David Halpern conducted the first Teachers Law School in the summer of This inaugural program was sponsored by TEX-ABOTA, comprised of the Texas chapters of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). ABOTA is a national association of experienced trial lawyers and judges dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the civil jury trial right provided by the Seventh Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. First and foremost ABOTA works to uphold the jury system. ABOTA has educational programs designed for all ages. Since 2009 ABOTA-sponsored Teachers Law Schools have been conducted in Texas, California and Denver. Teachers Law Schools like this one are planned for Jacksonville and Miami in late Through our Teachers Law School, highly respected and experienced judges and lawyers from around the state of Florida, who live and work with the law daily, will share the realities of the practice of law and how and why our justice system works the way it does to protect our individual rights. Those selected to participate will learn about the inner workings of our court system and the impact it has on our businesses and our individual lives.
