The Role of OSGi Technology in the Home Gateway Initiative (HGI) and End to End Connectivity and Service Provisioning Paolo PASTORINO Chief Technology and Chief Business Officer Home Gateway Initiative & Project Manager, Telecom Italia* * On leave
Agenda General introduction and goals of HGI HGI organisation and technical overview Business environment and working process End to end approach Conclusion
Introduction to HGI Drivers & goal
Drivers for home networking WiFi enablement of the home More than one PC in use Music and Video going on line Future two way multimedia services Sales (millions) What s 10.0 the role for the Telco? 0.0 Global sales of Wifi-enabled laptops
Drivers for home networking Lots of companies producing WiFi and broadband gateways Growing market worldwide Prices falling rapidly Technology changing rapidly Consumer electronics companies offering IP enabled devices
But for the customer its all very confusing Its still all too complex (ease of use) No one is responsible for end to end quality assurance (value for the end user) Services cannot be guaranteed (value for the provider) The technology is changing rapidly (flexibility and future proofness) There appears to be little standardisation
So, why the HGI? Unavailability of Home Gateways providing full support to the telecom operators requirements for triple play services (FS-VDSL experience) Unavailability of reliable, flexible, cost effective end-to to-end solutions (access network + HG + home network architecture) for multiple-play play services able to satisfy first of all the customers and, of course, the service providers and manufacturers as well The Home Gateway is not seen as a generic advanced modem-router, but a service enabler device and an added value for both the customer and the service provider
What will HGI enable.. Entertainment Home Gateway PC Home Network QoS control Services Internet Service integration End to end service delivery Gaming Communication services Personal content Device Management Security Security
History and timeline December 15 th 2004, founded by 9 members March 2 nd 2005: press release April : kickoff meeting, 130 participants from 34 members (11 operators + 23 manufacturers), 56 members as of September 30 th October 10 th, 2005: first architectural document approved (Internal- Confidential) Next plenary meeting: Bordeaux, December Business requirements release 1 : Q (Jan 06 public) Technical specifications release 1 : Q (April 06 public) Plugfest: : by Q First products by mid 2006 Business requirements release 2 : Q Technical specifications release 2 : Q4 2006

HGI Goal 1 : specify To rapidly specify a low cost, high capability end-to to-end multi- service residential system providing communication tools for the home environment based on a gateway between access networks and residential devices. Be agnostic of access network Based on business requirements Provide a remote management service for the home gateway & the devices beyond, Allow the right device or application to connect to the right service platform with the right service class / Quality of Service, Recognise and potentially unite devices capabilities Play a role in the local network to federate device capabilities and offer customers a better integrated home environment.
HGI Goal 2 : Unify To rapidly gain a high profile and build credibility through obvious commitment of major players with declared aim to take as a basis the work undertaken within existing bodies such as DSL Forum, DLNA, ITU-T, T, JTC1, IEC, OSGi,, DVB. base on existing standards unify them within a common architecture fill the gaps if any promote the resulting specs as an official standard (ITU, JTC1,...)
Multiple-play play standards space Service domain Voice Video Internet Fixed mobile conv. Other services & integrated scenarios Core network domain ETSI TISPAN DVB-IP IETF 3GPP Access network domain UMA Integrated approach at all the OSI layers Residential gateway domain ETSI TISPAN HGI DSL Home OSGi Home network domain DVB-HN DLNA DLNA Devices domain DSL Home OSGi
Filling the gaps or sewing patches? filling the gaps of Home network standardisation might not be sufficient, so Glue is not enough, patches are needed and as well some delete and patch
HGI organisation and working method Business Groups Manufacturers Feedback and and Input Input Group Operators Requirements Group Technical Groups HGW HNA QOS RODM Reference Architecture Task Force
Use cases process Member company Input Use case scenario candidates Selection Short term selection Long term selection Consolidation & extraction of requirement on gateway Gateway Requirement Release 1 Q Gateway Requirement Release 2 Approved by Q Inspired by DLNA Management Commitee
Business Group Produce business requirements Through a process of uses cases & usage scenario (DLNA type of approach) Service driven requirements Interaction between operators and manufacturers Global usage scenario to be provided as inputs to the technical groups Analyze broadband market & home gateway Customer wants & needs on broadband Define business ecosystem
Use cases and usage scenarios More than 100 use cases submitted 16 use cases (high priority/short term) detailed for release 1: Voice and video Network access and control Provisioning Quality of service Legacy devices support
Reference architecture task force Clear high level definitions and requirements Functionalities, interfaces and boundaries Impact on access network platform MUST, MUST NOT and just a few SHOULD to help developers and operators
Technical groups (1/2) Home Gateway SW and HW architecture and Security (Chair: Telecom Italia; Deputy Chair: Siemens) Define a base HW/SW architecture and requirements for a cost effective, flexible, secure and future-proof Home Gateway supporting advanced multiple play services Identify security features needed and their implementation Home Networking architecture and technology (Chair: Deutsche Telekom; Deputy Chair: Philips) Define requirements for optimal home networking architectures enabling end-to to-end delivery and consumption of multiple play services from inside as well as outside the house. Analyze the impact of services and applications coexistence on the networking requirements
Technical groups (2/2) End to end Quality of Service Architecture (Chair: France Telecom; Deputy Chair: PMC-Sierra) Develop an end to end QOS architecture. Identify all necessary QOS control points and management/control interfaces Determine a suitable way of mapping WAN to LAN and LAN to LAN QoS Identify a solution of giving flexibility and freedom to the customers in managing their QoS profile while protecting premium services provided by the operator Remote operations and device management (Chair: Telefonica; Deputy Chair: Pirelli) Define common operator requirements to ensure user- friendliness for the provisioning and simple use and integration (full end to end Plug and Play) of networked devices and services by the end-users
Service awareness Knowing what? And why? Interactions among all the available management platforms to exchange information and data
Service awareness of the GW Network status (WAN & LAN) IP Ports used Physical I/F Traffic profile (Upstream/downstream/intra-LAN) Active devices Advanced management features (preassurance( preassurance, provisioning, troubleshooting at all the OSI layers) Service deployment QoS (CAC, etc) Security policies ALGs
Integrated management Device and gateway management Network management QoS management Service provisioning/activation up to the terminal
Possible architectural integrations Home Gateway HGI + OSGi Gateway Home Gateway HGI + OSGi devices Home Gateway HGI with integrated OSGi stack Further investigations are needed to map requirements, business cases (for manufacturers and service and connectivity providers), technical pros/cons, flexibility, impact on terminals and public network
Conclusions HGI is the forum to define the next generation of service aware and cost effective residential gateways HGI is customer focused HGI mission is enabling true triple play & aiming at multi play services HGI requirements are based on use cases HGI is defining a new concept of service awareness of the HG addressing the entire end to end platform
