1 Young Entrepreneurship a key factor in quality development in education and learning? Arvid Frøsland Principal/Head teacher Lista upper secondary school Farsund, Norway

2 Lista upper secondary school: 141 students (most of them years of age) 32 employees, of whom 24 are teachers Programmes: Building and construction technology Design and craft subjects Electrical and electronic subjects Technical skills and industrial production ICT subjects (from August 2009) (Sales and services) 2 years at school + 2 years as an apprentice The first two years at school also include 2-5 weeks of out-of-school training per year

5 There is a seach for quality in schools. On the political agenda

6 But quality can be - abstract - difficult to measure - subjective Where shall we look for it? And how do know we have quality if we have it?

7 In Norway: The impression we often get is that quality is equal to doing well in the PISA-survey Look to Finland

8 OECD is an organisation promoting economic cooperation and development Is PISA - A leaning survey - like the tower? or - A pisa of cake?

9 If we reach the goals and aims given by the political authorities or move persistently towards them. If we to an increasing and improving extent - live up to the expectations given by society and lawmakers. If we can give our youngsters the competence they need to find their place in an extremely rapidly changing society..then we have quality no matter what the PISAresults tell us..

14 Review of Quality and Equity in Education in Norway (Peter Mortimore OECD 2005) I the perspective of Lifelong learning (15-25 years) Norway is: - In general equal to Sweden and Denmark - No 3 in reading (23 countries) - No 2 in mathematics - The students have positive attitudes - They want to learn more - Good anti-mobbing program - Innovative thinking - Democratic competence - Critical sense and self confidence

15 Young entrepreneurship meets so many of the socalled basic competencies or basic skills: - Creativity/innovation - Subject skills (mother tongue, mathematics, social science, etc) - Working together/cooperation - Creativity and innovation - Responsibility - Ethical competence - ICT - Desicion making - Etc.

16 Quality: A young boy or girl when he or she graduates from school has the necessary qualities and competencies to establish themselves in a changing and unpredictable world

17 Partner in a Comenius-project with schools in Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, The Czech Republic, Romania: Establishing a portfolio-system focusing on the soft skills and the competencies not shown in the final diploma What is our job as teachers and educators? - To light candles or to fill bottles?

18 Of course we should take PISA seriously But we should never be allowed to forget that the business of lighting candles is the most important

19 And there is a lot of hard work waiting for us.

20 But be careful in choosing your strategies
