2 In 2013, the College established The Master s Development Fund to mark the retirement of Professor Paul Luzio as Master of St Edmund s. The campaign successfully raised over 160,000, which the College is using to engage with architects and planners to begin the next phase of the College s physical growth. We need to continue to raise funds in order to make this vision a reality commemorates the 50th anniversary of the establishment of St Edmund s as a Graduate College. The College has grown dramatically since then, with over 500 students today. However, many of the shared spaces in the College remain the same as when St Edmund s had fewer than 100 students. With the growth in student numbers, comes an increasing need for accommodation. The College is currently in negotiations over the neighbouring Mount Pleasant House site, which could deliver an additional 150 much-needed rooms. However, this would result in even greater pressure on the College s small Combination Room and its limited catering facilities. The Master s Development Fund was set up to meet the challenge of providing a modern Eddies experience, in the same informal and friendly college setting, to the students of today. We need the help of our alumni and friends to be able to fund the next stage of the College s development. The College continues to develop its exciting new vision for the future, which you can be part of by donating to the Master s Development Fund.

3 A Message from the Master As the new Master, I was asked to describe my first impressions of the College, and I cited four: the warmth and friendliness of the students, Fellows and staff; the feeling of shared enterprise, can do and energy; the exciting range of tasks to tackle; and that it felt like it would be fun. These are still abiding impressions, but let me focus briefly on some of the tasks to do. The project to develop accommodation on the Mount Pleasant House site is likely to be one that we are able to fund from external sources. While this does not depend on grants and donations, it will force the pace on work to improve common areas of the College that have not been enlarged since we had 100 students the Combination Room and the Dining Hall. Our facilities for teaching, seminars and research have become inadequate to handle a College of over 500. Plans are now being drawn up and will form the centrepiece of our appeal to alumni and other supporters to help us create a future student experience of the College as vibrant and abiding as that of earlier Eddies. If that is our future, we can also appeal to celebrate our heritage: 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of St Edmund s as a Graduate College, when St Edmund s could matriculate its first postgraduate students. The College s first four Fellows were also elected in And in 2016 we will celebrate the centenary of our College Chapel, with its unique position as the only Roman Catholic chapel of any Oxbridge college. To mark these anniversaries, we will not only hold several special events, but we have also applied for planning permission to upgrade the Chapel porch steps to allow for easier access and to incorporate a small garden and statue of St Edmund of Abingdon, after whom the College is named. There is much else to do, but I hope that these two projects embody the spirit and energy of St Ed's and that we can count on your support as we build a College fit for the future and well rooted in its past. 5 The Purpose of the Fund Following a successful campaign in which over 160,000 was raised for the Master s Development Fund to enable the College to begin the process of obtaining planning permission for the next stage of the College s building plans, we need to continue to raise funds in order to make this vision a reality. The College is commissioning detailed architectural drawings and seeking planning permission for the first phase. The focus of this phase will be the public and student facilities in and around the historic Norfolk building. This will bring the College s core amenities into the 21st century, cater for historic and future growth, and retain the Norfolk building as the centre of College life. Needs and Priorities We very much hope that you can contribute towards our exciting plans for the future of the College. The College has consulted widely with Fellows, students and alumni to identify the following needs and priorities for the College over the next twenty to thirty years: Improved student facilities such as an extension to the Combination Room (CR) Expanded dining and catering facilities Additional residential accommodation to house a further 150 students on site Increased academic and conference facilities, including further teaching and meeting rooms Improved provision and facilities for Fellows and staff Purpose-built space for the Research Institutes A Porters Lodge and gates to improve security A Master s Lodge Improved provision for bicycle and vehicle parking To meet these requirements, the College has developed its vision for the future through a new Strategic Plan. The immediate priority is for student facilities, because areas such as the Combination Room and the Dining Hall are the same size as when the College had a fifth of its current number of students.

6 Donation Form St Edmund s College Supporting the needs and priorities of Eddies students The Strategic Plan has been devised to meet the needs of Eddies students, both current and future. CR representatives have played a key role in its conception. The CR executive strongly supports the decision to focus on the expansion of the Combination Room and improved dining facilities in the first stage of development, since this will ensure that the Norfolk building continues to be the lively hub of College Life. The Master s Development Fund is a fitting tribute to the Mastership of Paul Luzio, launching the next stage of College development. We believe the Fund will allow Eddies to continue to grow in stature, reputation and student experience while maintaining the core values of the College today: the friendly and welcoming attitude for which we are famous throughout Cambridge.
