1 CREATIVE ACADEMY LEARNING TO WORK MASTER OF ARTS IN DESIGN AND APPLIED ARTS Twenty young international designers are admitted every year to the exclusive Master of Arts in Design and Applied Arts focused on the luxury product and everything related to it (communication and visual merchandising). The Master of Arts in Design and Applied Arts is a postgraduate course promoted by Creative Academy in Milan, the Richemont Group s international design school specialized in jewelry, watchmaking and accessories. Creative Academy aims at training young creative talents who are able to dive directly into the professional world after their studies. The thirteenth edition of the Master of Arts in Design and Applied Arts has started in January 2016 after a careful screening of the manifold applications coming from all around the world. The first 7 months of the Master are spent in Creative Academy in Milan, whereas during the last 3 months students do an internship in one of the Maisons of the Richemont Group, leader in the luxury industry with many Brands such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Giampiero Bodino, A. Lange & Söhne, Baume & Mercier, IWC Schaffhausen, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Officine Panerai, Piaget, Ralph Lauren Watch & Jewelry, Roger Dubuis, Vacheron Constantin, Alaïa, Alfred Dunhill, Chloé, Lancel, Montblanc, Peter Millar, Purdey and Shanghai Tang. The Group strengthens its commitment and will to manage impacts on society and the environment through the Corporate Social Responsibility, which this project is part of. The aim of the program is to convey theory into the practice of the professional world. The Master runs across the entire process that goes from design up to the development of the product through outstanding craft activities and the study of marketing and communication, without leaving aside theoretical lessons about the dynamics of the luxury world and the competitive benefits conveyed by applied creativity. The school has close strategic ties with POLI.design: a Consortium of Politecnico di Milano which contributes actively to the didactical program of the master courses by supplying teaching personnel and granting access to Europe s most advanced technological and research facilities. Creative Academy also collaborates with SDA Bocconi School of Management, one of the major international management institutions, as well as with Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte. 3 THE MASTER OF ARTS IN DESIGN AND APPLIED ARTS JANUARY NOVEMBER 2016 Objectives The Master of Arts in Design and Applied Arts aims at giving young designers specialized training in applied arts and in particular in the fields of jewelry, watchmaking and accessories. Its objective is to channel the creative elements of design through practical, hands-on knowledge of craftsmanship while keeping the focus on brand reputation and the final customer. The program is held in collaboration with POLI.design, a Consortium of the Politecnico di Milano, SDA Bocconi School of Management, and the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte. A certificate is awarded upon completion of the program: seventh months at Creative Academy in Milan (January - July), plus three-month internship granted to deserving students (September November). Requirements The program is reserved for 20 young international talents who have successfully completed a course of studies in disciplines related to design (university degree or equivalent). Work experience, even at apprenticeship level, is preferred. Fluency in spoken and written English is compulsory. The selection process includes an interviews with the students. Admission In order to apply for the Master of Arts in Design and Applied Arts, candidates have to send the application form, a resume, a colour-printed portfolio with projects, sketches, manual renderings including gouaches if possible (CD with 3D models is optional), copy of your certificates and two passport-size photos. The documents must be sent by 15 th September of every year. 4 COURSE STRUCTURE Attendance Attendance is mandatory and students are expected to give a full-time commitment. A number of guided tours in addition to regular classroom attendance are an integral part of the master program. All classes, seminars, laboratories and guided tours will be held in English. The course program The course program is designed to give a practical base to theory through the steady exposure of students to the working world. The Academy seeks to guide students through the entire process that runs from conception to design and production. It intends to deepen the fundamental relationship between brand values and respect for the customer, the enterprise and the production process, design and product. That is why the program is divided into different, interchangeable units: lectures on marketing, branding and communication creative exercises, internet and field research presentations by brand CEOs, competitors, entrepreneurs and professional designers seminars on luxury and arts and crafts seminars on jewelry, watches and accessories seminars on new materials seminars on manual rendering computer training in Photoshop, Illustrator, 3D programs and KeyShot presentation skills projects realized for the Maisons of Richemont Group innovative projects realized for partners outside the Richemont Group guided visits around Italy and abroad. Maison Projects Maison projects are commissioned and overseen directly by Maisons from within the Richemont Group. Students work on products that have the potential to be put into production. The importance of these projects resides, on one hand, in the opportunity to work on real projects the way established professionals inside the Maison would; and, on the other, in the opportunity to learn firsthand what it means to work for a luxury brand in the respect of its values and tradition. Guided tours The numerous guided tours to exhibitions, museums, private and public collections, tradeshows and specialized fairs, cultural events, artistic workshops, laboratories and design centers in Italy and abroad, represent a fundamental part of the program. They are subsequently analyzed in group discussions and workshops and verified by examinations.
5 Internship A three-month internship at one of the Richemont Group s trade-mark companies is offered to the most deserving students at the end of the course of study, from September to November. Internships are assigned based on an evaluation of the students abilities, personal interests and the individual skills they have demonstrated during the master program. Tuition The tuition fee for each student is ,00 + VAT. Scholarships will be awarded to the most deserving students.
6 THE FACULTY The Creative Academy s faculty has been selected from among the world s leading universities, design and business schools, including POLI.design, a Consortium of Politecnico di Milano, and SDA Bocconi School of Management. A fundamental contribution is given by the Chief Executive Officers and the Creative Directors of all the major Richemont Group trade-mark companies, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Giampiero Bodino, A. Lange & Söhne, Baume & Mercier, IWC Schaffhausen, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Officine Panerai, Piaget, Ralph Lauren Watch & Jewelry, Roger Dubuis, Vacheron Constantin, Alaïa, Alfred Dunhill, Chloé, Lancel, Montblanc, Peter Millar, Purdey and Shanghai Tang. They are joined by managers from some of the luxury goods industry s leading companies and by some of the most illustrious designers and exponents in the world of international design, art, culture, luxury, fashion, communication, entrepreneurship and economy. All of them are called upon to share their personal and professional experiences and to give students an insider s look at what it takes to succeed in their respective business. Furthermore, Franco Cologni, Giampiero Bodino, Grazia Valtorta, and Giorgio Preda hold classes during the academic year. Angelo Maria Barducci has the fundamental role as students tutor; he is the Internal Coordinator who follows the students throughout the seven months of the Master in Milan.
7 ACADEMIC RESOURCES Creative Academy is located in the northwestern part of Milan in a spacious and modern industrial loft that was renovated specifically for the school in Administration offices, classrooms and research facilities are all located on the ground floor, where there is also a large 300-square-meter area dedicated to cultural events and exhibitions. The first floor hosts the school library, as well as large open spaces dedicated to offices and conference rooms. Creative Academy provides its students with all the technology they need to work and learn, including the latest computers, software, on-line archives specialized in innovative design materials and advanced audio/video equipment. Each student is provided with a regularly updated schedule of didactic material, including detailed information on professors and guest speakers, guided tours and events of interest.
8 LIBRARY FACILITIES Creative Academy offers its students access to the school s private library, specialized in design and applied arts: a priceless tool for their studies and project development. The library currently contains over 3000 volumes. The number of acquisitions is continually growing, thanks to numerous private donations. This is an ambitious project: its goal is to give life to a collection of specialised international books and periodicals, primarily in English, which can become, with time, an important reference point for the study of design and decorative art with a particular focus on jewelry and watchmaking. The Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte, a private non-profit foundation active in Milan since 1995 with the mission of safeguarding and promoting art and artistic craftsmanship, coordinates and finances the library on behalf of Creative Academy.
