1 C O L L E G E P R O F I L E - O V E R V I E W College of Charleston Charleston, SC The College of Charleston, founded in 1770, is a public, liberal arts institution. The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education has commended eight of its undergraduate programs as being among the best in the Southeast, including all its science programs as well as history and mathematics. The honors program, which is open to all majors, features a tutorial in which students work closely with faculty on research projects. The College of Charleston expects to play a special role within the state in offering a public alternative to the very best of the private liberal arts colleges. Programs are offered through the Schools of the Arts, Business and Economics, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Sciences and Mathematics. Its 52-acre campus, located in the center of Charleston, contains many pre-civil War buildings.
