1 The Ohio State Dental Board Annual Report - The Ohio State Dental Board (Board) is the agency responsible for examining and licensing dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistant radiographers for practice in Ohio. In addition, the Board administers and enforces Chapter 4715 of the Ohio Revised Code and Chapter 4715 of the Ohio Administrative Code and adopts rules establishing standards for the safe practice of dentistry and dental hygiene. The Board is responsible for acting on complaints through investigations, inquiries and inspections, and holding adjudication hearings pursuant to Ohio Revised Code Chapter 119. The Board is also responsible for monitoring continuing education compliance of its licensees. The Board keeps a register of all licensees and all disciplinary action taken against licensees. The Board is self-sustaining through means of fees derived from applications for initial licensure, renewal fees, late fines and other miscellaneous sources. The Board is fully funded through the 4K9 operating fund for professional licensing boards. Fees generated in excess of the Board's budget remain part of this fund. Any adjustments in spending authority or funding allotments must be approved by the State Controlling Board. CLINICAL EXAMINATIONS The Ohio State Dental Board participated in the North East Regional Board (NERB) examinations in August and December 1998, and in May of The written simulated clinical exercise portion of the NERB exam is now administered for both dentists and dental hygienists at the Sylvan Learning Centers on an ongoing basis. The clinical portion of the NERB examination was conducted at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry on May 6 and 7, 1999, and at Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry on May 13 and 14, Page 2
3 The clinical examination for dental hygienists was held at the following sites on the following dates: April 30, 1999: May 1, 1999: Lima Technical College, Lima The Ohio State University, Columbus Raymond Walters College, Cincinnati Youngstown State University, Youngstown Owens State Community College, Toledo Shawnee State University, Portsmouth Sinclair Community College, Dayton May 20, 1999: Lakeland Community College, Kirtland Lorain Community College, Elyria May 21, 1999: Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland NATIONAL BOARD EXAMINATIONS The National Board, being the written theory examination, was offered by the Board to candidates at The Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University on July 13, and December 7 and 8, 1998, and on March 29 and 30, The National Board examination was also offered at the dental hygiene schools on July 13 and December 7, 1998, and on March 29, Page 3
4 MEETINGS The Board held eight (8) Board meetings between July 1, 1998 and June 30, In addition, in order to keep abreast of activities occurring with the Board's testing agency, the North East Regional Board of Examiners (NERB), several Board members attended, at no expense to the Board, both the fall and spring General Assembly and Steering Committee meetings of the organization in Washington, DC. Board members also served as examiners for the NERB examination and participated in the testing process. Several Board members also attended the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Dental Examiners (AADE) in San Francisco, CA on October 21-23, Members attending the meeting were: Eleanore Awadalla, D.D.S., President, William J. Lightfoot, D.D.S., Secretary, Donald E. Demkee, D.D.S., Lynda L. Sabat, R.D.H., Frank C. Williams, D.D.S., and Lili C. Kaczmarek, Esq., Executive Director. Ms. Kaczmarek also attended the American Association of Dental Administrators (AADA) conference which was held in San Francisco, CA earlier that week, on October 19-20, The AADE's Mid-Year Meeting on February 27, 28 and March 1, 1999, held in Chicago, Illinois, was attended by: Lili C. Kaczmarek, Esq., Executive Director, Eleanore Awadalla, DDS, President, William J. Lightfoot, D.D.S., Secretary, Donald E. Demkee, D.D.S., Lynda L. Sabat, R.D.H., and Frank C. Williams, D.D.S. In order to remain current and competitive with other dental boards and dental organizations throughout the country, attendance at these meetings is vital. As is Board policy, the Board covers expenses for its Executive Director, President and Secretary, and pays only the registration for all others who attend. Page 4
