Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 38 hours per week 12 month contract, with view to extend subject to ongoing funding Programs Manager INTRODUCTION Self Help Addiction Resource Centre (SHARC) is a community based service with a unique approach to helping people affected by substance use problems. SHARC combines mutual selfhelp and social support processes with professional therapeutic approaches to provide services in the field of the addictions. SHARC s programs include residential rehabilitation services for young people, help for families affected by drug use problems and advocacy services for drug treatment service users. We have earned a reputation as an innovative and successful service with a commitment to helping people to help themselves. 2 MISSION STATEMENT To provide opportunities for individuals, families and communities affected by addiction and related problems to achieve meaningful, satisfying and contributing lives. PROGRAM OVERVIEW FDH is a service for families and significant others impacted by another s drug use. Our approach to helping offers opportunities for emotional and practical support, for information and education, for social and friendship activities and for skilled professional help. Ultimately, FDH seeks to strengthen people s ability to deal with drug and alcohol use problems in the family and to help family members and friends who use drugs in a problematic way. FDH has five main program areas: Family Drug Helpline - offering support and information to family members and significant others Action for Recovery Course (ARC) - a six week education program. The course provides participants with knowledge and understanding as a power to overcome destructive patterns and create change. Family Support Groups - a state-wide network of family and friends self-help groups Family counselling Siblings online program. POSITION OVERVEIW The Family Drug Helpline offers peer-based support between 9am and 5 pm Monday to Friday. Afterhours and weekends calls are diverted to professional counsellors. The position involves the development and coordination of the Helpline. It includes the coordination of volunteer recruitment and training programs, and the ongoing coordination and support of volunteers. Page 2 of 5

3 SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Operational The development, delivery, coordination and evaluation of an effective Helpline service The development of initiatives that involve volunteers in the shaping of the service Participation in the overall planning and development of Family Drug Help services Provide support and assistance to family members that present to FDH in person Supervision and debriefing of Volunteers Provision of support, supervision and debriefing of volunteers. Recruitment and Training Management of ongoing recruitment and selection process for volunteers Coordination and delivery of volunteer training programs with support from other staff and volunteers. Administration and Resourcing Develop and distribute the FDH newsletter, quarterly Development and implementation of procedural guidelines for volunteers in dealing with Helpline calls Organisation and maintenance of up to date information on appropriate services for family members and friends Preparation of rosters for the telephone volunteer service The maintenance of accurate records and statistics of the service and the preparation of required written reports Coordination of referrals and/or bookings for Family Counselling, ARC and Support Groups Update FDH website and social media on a regular basis Networking and promotional activities Page 3 of 5

4 Development of FDH resources for family members Manage FDH petty cash Coordinate the responses to FDH enquires Coordinate and supervise FDH student placements Other duties as requested by Programs Manager. Key Result Areas Provision of timely and effective support to Helpline volunteers Maintenance of adequate volunteers to meet call demand on the Helpline Development and maintenance of reliable referral information for the volunteers on the Helpline Recruitment of new volunteers for the Helpline The development and delivery of high quality volunteer training programs Facilitation of links and cooperative partnerships with the alcohol and drug treatment sector and other professional organisations Provision of a suitable work environment for volunteers on the Helpline. KEY SELECTION CRITERIA Appropriate tertiary level qualifications in the community welfare field, such as alcohol and other drugs, mental health, psychology, social work or counselling An understanding of the needs of families affected by alcohol &/or drug misuse Experience in leading a team of volunteers Demonstrated experience in supervision and debriefing Well-developed organizational, time management and interpersonal skills Demonstrated ability to network with key stakeholders Intermediate/advanced computer skills Page 4 of 5

5 Demonstrated capacity to work independently and take initiative Personal experience of being affected by a family members alcohol or drug use A current Victorian driver s license. DESIREABLE SELECTION CRITERIA Experience in the development and delivery of training programs Experience using Microsoft Publisher. OTHER INFORMATION Normal hours of work for the incumbent to this position will be 9am to 5 pm Monday to Friday. The capacity to work flexible hours is required for this position for out of hours training or promotional activities. An offer of employment will be subject to the satisfactory clearance of a criminal records check and a 3-month probationary period.
