1 Georgia Career Information Center [Spring, 2013] Outlook An e-publication of the Georgia Career Information Center Career Decision-Making Making career decisions is a lifelong process. It is all about exploring and experiencing the world of work. It is also about understanding abilities, interests, skills, and values and combining these to create a meaningful framework for life. You will have many opportunities to discover and rediscover careers that match a changing lifestyle. It is important that you are an active participant in this decision-making process. 4 Grades K-5 Reading List: Health Science 4 Title/Author Frontier Surgeons: A Story about the Mayo Brothers by Emily Crofford Out of Darkness: The Story of Louis Braille by Russell Freedom Can You Hear a Rainbow? by Jamee Riggio Heelan Becky the Brave: A Story About Epilepsy by Laurie Lears A Sick day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead Pigs Make Me Sneeze! by Mo Willems Description This biography describes the lives of two brothers who founded the world-famous clinic in Minnesota This biography tells the story of Louis Braille, blind at the age of three, who developed the system of raised dots that enabled blind people to read and write When Chris was a baby, his parents realized that he didn't notice the dog barking or a door slamming. Chris tells young readers about what it is like to be deaf and describes typical events in his life and the ways he has adjusted to his hearing loss. With the assistance of hearing aids, Chris is able to hear vibrations, loud noises, and some other sounds. With sign language, speech therapy, and an interpreter, Chris' days are much like those of hearing children, filled with classes, soccer games, and children's theater Nothing seems to scare Sarah's big sister Becky, until having an epileptic seizure makes her reluctant to return to school, and so Sarah summons her own courage to explain the disease to the other students Amos McGee, an elderly man who works at the zoo, finds time each day for five special friends. With empathy and understanding he gives the elephant, tortoise, penguin, rhinoceros, and owl the attention they need. One morning, Amos wakes up with a bad cold and stays home in bed. His friends wait patiently and then leave the zoo to visit him. Their trip mirrors his daily bus ride to the zoo and spans three nearly wordless spreads. Amos, sitting up in bed, clasps his hands in delight when his friends arrive When Gerald cannot stop sneezing, he is sure he is allergic to pigs. His effervescent best friend takes things in stride until the fits of sneezing threaten to end their friendship

6 5 6 Know More to Grow More: Health Science Career Cluster Overview: Applicable Pathways: Are science classes your favorite? Do you enjoy helping people? Have you served as a volunteer in a hospital? Do you follow instructions exactly? Can you work fast in an emergency? Do you take good notes in class? If you answered yes to two or more of the questions above, you might be interested in considering a career in health science. In the Health Science cluster you would promote health and wellness or diagnose and treat injuries and disease. You could work directly with people. Or you could work in laboratories to get information used in research or diagnosis. Health service employees go to work at a variety of different sites. Some work in hospitals, offices, or laboratories. Others work on cruise ships, at sports arenas, or within communities. Therapeutic Services, Diagnostic Services, Health Informatics, Support Services, and Biotechnology Research & Development Employment Outlook: The outlook for employment in the Health Science cluster is very good. The number of elderly people is growing and they have greater health care needs. Advances in medical technology have increased the number of people who survive serious illnesses and injuries. These patients need more intensive therapy and care. The jobs in hospitals will grow the slowest. This is the result of an increase in outpatient care and services. For additional information on the Health Science Career Cluster and much more, visit Georgia Career Information Center One Park Place South Suite 823 Atlanta, GA Phone:
