3 - 1 - PURPOSES OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS CERTIFICATION Multiple sclerosis is a chronic and unpredictable disease that affects approximately 2.5 million individuals worldwide, as well as those who care about them. People living with multiple sclerosis need access to accurate and reliable information about the disease and the resources available to help them manage it. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society supports a voluntary certification process that reflects the knowledge necessary to provide high quality information and referral services. Therefore, Certification in Multiple Sclerosis Information and Referral provides formal recognition of a specific body of knowledge necessary to perform this function for individuals and families living with multiple sclerosis. Certification is intended to promote quality information and referral to those living with multiple sclerosis by: 1. Establishing a level of knowledge required for certification in multiple sclerosis information and referral. 2. Recognizing formally the individual s achievement in the area of multiple sclerosis information and referral. 3. Providing encouragement for personal and professional growth. 4. Demonstrating to the public and employers that the individual has met a national standard for the provision of multiple sclerosis information and referral. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Candidates must meet the following requirements: 1. Have at least a Bachelor s Degree (or equivalent). 2. Have at least one year or 1800 hours of direct experience in multiple sclerosis information and referral. 3. 4 - 2 - ATTAINMENT OF CERTIFICATION AND RECERTIFICATION Eligible candidates who pass the Certification Examination in Multiple Sclerosis Information and Referral are eligible to use the registered designation MSCIR after their names and will receive certificates from the Society. A registry of those certified in Multiple Sclerosis Information and Referral will be maintained by the Society and may be reported in its publications. Certification in multiple sclerosis information and referral is recognized for a period of five years at which time the candidate must retake and pass the current Certification Examination in Multiple Sclerosis Information and Referral or meet such alternative requirements as are in effect at that time in order to retain certification. REVOCATION OF CERTIFICATION Certification will be revoked for either of the following reasons: 1. Falsification of an Application. 2. Misrepresentation of certification status. The Appeals Committee of the Society provides the appeal mechanism for challenging revocation of Certification. It is the responsibility of the individual to initiate this process.
