3 Why do an inventory? An inventory creates a record of the contents of your home and their value. It also provides a record of serial numbers for electronic goods and appliances, should your home be broken into. It can also serve as a chance to measure whether your insurance coverage is adequate. Home inventory tips List every item of value in your home. Include the serial numbers of all items that have them. Include makes and models in your description. Keep all receipts, along with a description of the items. Keep a detailed record of antiques, jewelry, major appliances and collector s items. Continuously update your Personal Home Inventory as you acquire new items. Protect your property It can be difficult to determine ownership if an item is stolen. To help verify that an item is yours, keep the following: Receipts, purchase orders or invoices Canceled checks Registration, warranty and guarantee documents Instruction manuals Tax records Credit card or bank statements (online or in hard copy) Serial numbers on your electronics Use your smartphone to keep an online home inventory by downloading the myhome Scr.APP. book app. Storing your Personal Home Inventory Keep copies of your inventory in several places. Consider the following: A safe deposit box A fire resistant box or safe in your home At your place of employment in a locked cabinet With a family member or close friend With your accountant or attorney Use your mobile device to create an inventory Use your Apple or Android cell phone or tablet to create a home inventory by using the NAIC s free myhome Scr.APP.book mobile app to take photos, record serial numbers and keep a digital copy of your inventory. The app is free and can be found in your device s app store. June 2014/Kansas Insurance Department

18 Tips for photographing or video recording inventory items Start in one corner of a room and work your way around. Take wide angle and close up shots. Have a family member in the photos to help verify ownership. Make sure videotapes and photos are dated. To demonstrate quantity of clothing, open closet doors. Take photos of open drawers to show content. Position yourself at a 45-degree angle to the subject surface for shiny objects. Use a dark cloth as a background. Open glass doors to prevent glare. Photograph your power tools and the inside of your toolbox. Tape photos here Start at the bottom, and layer photos.

19 Important tips to follow before and after the storm Before the storm Do you have the right insurance? Check your coverage. Not all policies cover the following expenses: water damage debris or tree removal sewer backup because of flooding sump pump failure additional living expenses if disaster forces you from your home Check the limits of your coverage, including coverage for contents. Know your deductible amount. Have your agent s name and phone number. Federal flood insurance Homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover flooding. Consider buying federal flood insurance if damage from rising water is possible. Auto policy Check your auto policy. Comprehensive coverage (other than collision) takes care of flood damage to your car from a storm or flood. Inventory your personal property Update your inventory. Photograph and/or videotape each room and the exterior of your home, or use the myhome Scr.APP.book mobile app to keep a digital copy. List model and serial numbers, and attach sales receipts. After the storm If you do suffer loss or damage because of a storm, here are some recommendations on how to proceed: Contact your insurance company immediately to report losses. Take notes summarizing your conversation, and write down the name of the person with whom you spoke. Take photographs that show damaged property. Get instructions from your company s adjuster before calling anyone to repair or replace damaged property. Your insurer s visual inspection of your losses may be required before claims are paid. Safeguard your records, including your insurance policy. If you do sustain damage to your home or automobile following a major storm in which many people were affected, it may take longer than usual for the insurance company to settle your claim. If your settlement does not occur in a reasonable length of time, call your agent. If you still have problems coming to an agreement with your company, please contact the Kansas Insurance Department at
