3 Exec summary Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is taking the corporate world by storm, spurred on by users that want to be able to use the technology they are most comfortable with and frequently perceive as being better than that provided by their employer. Organisations seeing the cost and productivity benefits also want to take advantage of BYOD, but here lies the issue. Until now, many businesses have only made a passing glance at securing mobile phones. Smartphones and tablets have changed the threat landscape, yet few businesses have updated their polices or their security. BYOD complexes the issue even further by moving away from the IT department s normal stance to standardise. For organisations to implement BYOD securely requires a different mindset and a device agnostic approach.

4 Benefits of BYOD Undoubtedly one of the biggest benefits of BYOD is an increase in productivity. No longer constrained as to when and where they can carry both work and personal activities, employees can better organise their time. Shared ownership of mobile devices doesn t just help an organisation s hardware costs either, using technology that the user is already familiar with helps to lower training and maintenance costs too. BYOD also assists in helping to get over people s fear of new technology that is frequently a hindrance for organisations when rolling out new equipment. Too often when a new device or application designed to make a user s life easier is rolled out within an organisation there is an uphill battle to persuade the employee to actually use it. With BYOD the user knows and understands the device already and is far more likely to use it to its fullest extent. It also makes it easier to collaborate with colleagues on enterprise communication platforms or to reach out to prospects and customers on public social media sites. For the employee, BYOD delivers greater freedom in choosing the device they believe will help them do their job to the best of their ability. It makes home working more accessible, often creating a better work/life balance, and generally improves employee satisfaction, helping to retain staff and attract new talent. Most of all BYOD enables greater mobility - faster, lower costs and increase productivity helping an organisation become more agile.

5 Threats that BYOD Harbours In the past, standardisation of IT equipment has made it is easier for organisations to maintain a secure infrastructure. However, with the advent of smartphones and now BYOD a new series of issues challenges traditional viewpoints to securing mobile devices. Not so long ago the main threat concerning mobile phones was excessive international call charges or contact data loss if the phone stolen or mislaid. Although there was malware circulating, the threat was relatively low. Most organisations took the stance that the cost of mitigating the risk versus implementing additional security didn t make financial sense. With smartphones and tablets now capable of holding large amounts of information and offering multiple ways for malware infection and data loss to occur this stance on mobile security is seriously outdated. It is also almost certainly in stark contrast to the rest of an organisation s policy on handling data. In addition, a growing number of employees are bringing in their own device into the workplace to use alongside those provided by the organisation. Yet only 25% of businesses surveyed have put in place policies that cover the use of personal devices. BOYD has complicated the matter further by creating a heterogeneous mobile computing environment. Organisations that once standardised on Blackberry because it offered an enterprise server, find themselves trying to manage a wide range of devices on disparate operating systems. Ensuring devices are secure and controlling access to company resources becomes ever more complex, potentially creating additional vulnerabilities. In order to take back control, organisations need to rethink their policies and develop a mobile device security infrastructure that is device agnostic. The first step is to understand exactly what the threats are and where they come from. Malware There is very little that the average smartphone isn t capable of doing when compared to a desktop computer. SMS, , social networks, chat functionality, internet access and banking apps makes the mobile phone a very attractive target to criminals. This, combined with high speed access whether from 3G or Wi-Fi that enables users to be constantly online, offers many different ways for malware to gain a foothold. In a survey carried out recently by ESET of the 55% of businesses that had experienced some kind of threat over social media, 44% had experienced problems with malware. Whether it s clicking on a phishing link on a social networking site or downloading supposedly legitimate apps that have malware embedded, if path leads to allowing executables to run on a mobile device, it s certain to have been exploited already by criminals. Data Leakage Smartphones don t just provide a variety of ways to let malware in, it also makes it easy for data to leak out. With gigabytes of memory available even on the most basic of smartphone and easy access to apps such as Dropbox (used by 27% of the companies surveyed), transferring the latest copy of the sales forecast or customer database and taking it out of the organisation is an easy task for unscrupulous employee. The ease of using social media using a smartphone or tablet has also led to an increase in data leakage. 15% of organisations reported that data leakage had occurred over social networks during Revealing details about meetings, latest sales figures or a current research project, even though accidental, can impact significantly on a business. Lost or Stolen Devices Losing a mobile was once just an annoyance of losing a few key contact details. As already discussed it can hold a wealth of confidential information that is vital to an organisation s success. Whilst this can be backed-up, there is no guarantee that the person that ends up with the phone won t use it for their own gain by selling it to a competitor or making the information public.

6 Public Wi-Fi Our desire desire for data hungry computing means that Wi-Fi hotspots now appear almost everywhere ensuring connection to a trusted provider is not always easy since many criminals will set up networks to appear as trusted. In addition, users unaware of the dangers or just desperate for wi-fi access will use any open connection, particularly if this is how they are used to connecting when their phone was used only for personal use before. Tethering a smartphone to a laptop to use the cellular connection is likely to be more secure than connecting to a wi-fi hotspot, however users should be aware that the data being transferred from the laptop to the phone is still likely to be wifi and therefore easily intercepted. Data Roaming BYOD is likely to put the user in charge of their own billing, claiming it back on expenses. Without proper control over data roaming, costs can spiral if a user is unaware of the amount of data they are using over cellular networks rather than waiting for a wi-fi connection. Spam Spam is not just an annoyance, it can also lead to the user accidentally infecting their mobile, run remote access Trojans and even end up dialling premium rate numbers. Once just the scourge of , the success of social media has meant that spammers have switch tact and followed their audience. Nearly 74% of companies reported experiencing spam over social networks potentially impacting on productivity and providing another inroad for malware.

7 Enabling BYOD - Securely From a security standpoint having a multitude of different devices access data has, in the past, been a sure way to introduce malware and data breaches into the enterprise. Locking down the network and the devices that connect to it has been the recommended best practice, but this no longer fits in the fast moving world of business today, when access to information anywhere, from any device is an essential part of success. One of the key changes required to secure against BYOD is a change in mindset. The mobile phone has long since been a trusted part of an employee s communication tools. With limited processing power it didn t pose much of a threat to the organisation aside from data roaming costs. Today however, it is truly a mobile computer capable of holding large amounts of data, running software programs and delivering unprecedented online access. However, this has also meant it is now a major target for malware writers, spammers and other criminals yet most users don t even take advantage of the most basic security functions such as a password, let alone run any form of security software. In order to secure mobile devices and enable BYOD organisations need first to carry out a full risk assessment and develop new mobile computing policies using the same criteria as they do elsewhere in the business. Best practise will almost certainly dictate that anti-malware software on each device is required, to minimise the risk from infection or socialengineering techniques such as phishing. A customisable firewall will help protect against breaches and anti-spam software will block unwanted content. In addition, provision needs to be made for the eventuality, which will almost certainly happen, that the devices is lost or stolen. Depending on the risk assessment, it maybe that the data is already encrypted, regardless of this though, it must be possible to remotely wipe the device of all information - even if the perpetrator has already replaced the sim. To be device agnostic will require different security software depending on the mobile device s operating system. However, it is equally important that management of the security does not become an onerous task for the IT department. Therefore it is essential that the central management console is able to operate across the platforms. It is from here that a network administrator will be able to ensure all devices are complying with company policy, have all available updates and be able to control other aspects such as data roaming settings. BYOD is perhaps the surprise disruptive technology for 2012, already claiming the lives of enterprise tablets that have only just been launched. The speed at which it is taking the business world by storm should not be underestimated and organisation s should start to consider now how to remain secure and become device agnostic. Users have already proved with social media that if they like it enough it will be introduced into an organisation almost regardless of policy. The best approach is to act now and ensure that the controls are in place to remain secure.
