Conron Camp Foundation Sponsors of Pack and Troop 255 and Girl Scout Troops 4-525, & Grape Hollow Road Holmes, NY, Since Eagle Scouts March 16, 2007 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT On behalf of the Conron Camp Foundation, I would like to welcome everyone to our 67 th Annual Blue and Gold Family Dinner. Tonight we are proud to announce that we will be honoring our newest Eagle Scouts as well as Webelos Crossing Over to Troop 255. We shall also be noting the individual achievements of the Tigers, Cubs, Webelos, Scouts and Girl Scouts on their many accomplishments. This year we solicited journal advertisements to help off-set the costs of our meeting place as well as the production of this journal. We would like to thank all those who solicited and submitted advertisements, for their help in making tonight such a success. I would like to personally thank the leaders and adult volunteers that support the youths and the Scouting program for making us one of the finest and strongest organizations around. I believe the leadership we have will help our future live up to the traditions of our past. I am also proud that all our members are now meeting in the same building at the same time. It shows the unity of our organization, which was my biggest goal when I took this position. Seeing the number of youths that we sponsor I believe is our most important accomplishment. Again, welcome and we hope you enjoy the evening. Yours in Scouting, Howie Schubert Howie Schubert, President 3

Scouting Scouting is a worldwide movement of youth groups whose objective is to help boys and girls develop character, citizenship, and physical and mental fitness by training members in wood, field, and handicraft activities and by encouraging community service. Many nations have scouting organizations, and the number of boy and girl scouts total several million members throughout the world. Boy Scouts The organization was founded by the British General Sir Robert BADEN POWELL in Baden Powell had written a book on military reconnaissance and scouting that became so popular with younger readers that he wrote Scouting for Boys in The American organization, Boy Scouts of America, was founded on Baden Powell's model in Boys attain rising rank within the organization through various accomplishments, each of which earns a rank or merit badge. Locally Cub Scouts are organized into dens and packs and Boy Scouts into patrols and troops. The age groupings within the organization are: Tiger Cubs (age 6 or in the 1st grade); Cub Scouts (ages 7 to 8 or in grades 2 to 3); Webelos Scout (ages 9 to 10 or in grades 4 to 5); Boy Scouts (age 10 ½ and completed 5th grade or age 11 but under 18 years); and Venture Crew (age 14 and 8 th grade graduate or 15 years but not yet 21 years) open to men and women. Girl Scouts Founded in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia, by visionary Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts started with a membership of only 18 girls and a dream. Juliette, referred to as "Daisy," dreamed of giving the United States "something for all the girls." She envisioned an organization that would bring girls out of their cloistered home environments to serve in their communities and experience the open air. Within months, girl members were hiking through the woods in their knee-length blue uniforms, playing basketball in a curtained-off court, and going on camping trips. Nurtured by Daisy's personal funding she sold her extremely valuable necklace of rare matched pearls to finance operations in the early days and her unique brand of enthusiasm, the Girl Scout movement attracted the attention of many talented, educated women and girls by providing an outlet for their abilities. Initially, Girl Scouting in the United States was dependent on the British Girl Guide example for its name, uniform, handbook and basic ideas. By 1920, Girl Scouts was growing in its independence, with its own uniform; its handbook, Scouting for Girls; and its own constitution and bylaws, contained in the Blue Book of Rules for Girl Scout Captains. 6
About The Sponsors: The Pack, Troop and Girl Scouts are sponsored by the Conron Camp Foundation. The sponsoring organization was formed in 1940 for the sole purpose of sponsoring the Scouts. The Foundation is made up of parents of active members of the Pack, Troop and Girl Scouts, as well as past Scouts, and their parents, who have dedicated themselves to the ideals of Scouting. It is not uncommon for members to remain active for 20 or more years after they or their children have completed their Scouting days. Mr. James Conron, the Troop s Founder, served for over 59 years and was the driving force insuring that the Scouting Program provided a meaningful experience for the boys. Any Scouting Program needs volunteers to operate. As sponsors of the Pack, Troop and Girl Scouts they provide the needed support to enhance the Scouting Programs. In addition to the normal sponsor s support, the Conron Camp Foundation owns a 57 acre camp in Holmes, New York. The Camp was purchased in 1964 with donations obtained by Mr. Conron. The Camp is conveniently located one hour north of New York City. It is an excellent location for the weekend camping trips that are an important part of Scouting. Camp Conron has a lake for fishing and boating. The Camp also has a main house, lean-tos, tenting areas, hiking trails, a ball field, basketball court and an archery range. Pack and Troop 255 have been serving the community since 1940, providing Scouting programs for boys ages 6 to 18. The Troop has been active in the community since The Girl Scouts Troops 4-525, & were recently added in 2003 through Main House at Camp Conron today The Troop has produced 125 Eagle Scouts since being chartered by the Boy Scouts of America. 7
A Brief History of CAMP CONRON Many years ago, when the Boys Scouts camps on Long Island were being closed, Jim Conron, then the Scoutmaster of Troop 255, found it difficult to provide adequate camping facilities for our Troop. Ten Mile River was available, but it was impossible to get scout fathers to make the 125 mile trip to the camp on a Friday night. It was about this time that Jim began to dream of a camp of our own. In February 1965, that dream became a reality. With the help of the late Dr. Richard B. Dominick, one of Jim s clients at the bank, he Original house at Camp Conron, 1965 managed to raise $23,000 to purchase 57 acres and a partially finished house in Homes, NY which is about 65 miles north of the city. This was the beginning of Camp Conron. Jim started the difficult task of fund raising and the scout fathers started to build. As the money came in, work progressed. First a new well was drilled to provide adequate water. The fathers built lean-tos and latrines to accommodate about 60 boys. The next major project was to dredge a one acre spring-fed lake so it could be utilized for boating and water sports. A nature trail and an archery range were the next projects to be completed. During this period the Troop continued to grow and Jim envisioned a much-needed large dormitory room and a modern commercial kitchen. Jim Conron again met with his clients and scout parents. Jim Cordo, who was the Scoutmaster from 1967 through 1972, undertook the additional job of Camp Master. Jim Cordo, also a professional arm-twister, arranged for donations of materials for many of the projects and made sure that scout fathers always went home from a camping trip with tired muscles and sore backs. Fund raising was begun and a 25 feet by 25 feet room, with a large fireplace, was added across the back of the house. Canoeing on the lake The new room today serves 8
many purposes especially for camp meals, scouting instructions and cold weather sleep-ins. A 200 feet softball field was cleared and leveled and a full-size cement basketball court were added. Camp Conron has indeed been fortunate to have been supported by so many concerned contributors and cooperative parents. Not long after, a four room apartment was added atop the dormitory room for a fulltime caretaker. Under the guidance of Dom Marotta, the fathers completed this major project and the camp took on a new look. Additional sleeping quarters (now 16) and a bathroom were constructed and a boat house garage added. These Lean-tos nestled among the trees improvements, over a 25 year period, cost approximately $125,000 in materials with almost all the labor performed by scout fathers and Camp Conron members. Shortly after the house was operational, the Troop started using it for monthly camping trips. The boys decided that a Camp Conron patch and insignia were in order and a design competition was started. Four entries were selected as finalists: a footprint, a two-man tent, a bonfire and an evergreen tree. Dom Marotta, the marvelous engineer and planner that he was for most of the camp projects, managed to incorporate all four entries into the decal that today represents CAMP CONRON. 9
