Conerly-Steward and Wanda L. Lott (Includes student practice CD-ROM). -The Book of Style for Medical Transcription; 3rd Edition; Lea M. Sims; Published by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (formerly AAMT). PREREQUISITES: In order to complete this course successfully, students should have completed a beginning medical terminology/transcription course and possess the following characteristics: 1. Excellent English grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills. 2. Good listening skills. 3. Interest in medical language. 4. Intellectual flexibility. 5. Tolerance of long hours of sedentary activity. 6. Expertise in computer and transcribing machine manipulation and word processing software. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This advanced transcription course is designed to refine transcription skills to a competitive level by providing 20 chapters of realistic, challenging activities. The text is organized into an introductory part, 18 medical specialty areas, and a final part containing student exercises. COURSE OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of all the activities provided in this course, studies should be able to:
2 1. Apply knowledge of medical terminology, English grammar, punctuation, and spelling rules to the transcription of medication dictation from physicians with various ethnic backgrounds. 2. Transcribe accurately dictation from 18 medical specialties. 3. Transcribe correctly letters, information for a white paper, progress notes from a clinic setting, and other medical reports. 4. Format reports according to American Association of Medical Transcription (AAMT) guidelines. 5. Proofread and edit reports meticulously. 6. Identify and appropriately mark items that require the supervisor's and/or dictator's attention. 7. Research and/or verify patient information for accuracy. 8. Apply research skills to appropriate situations. 9. Use appropriate reference materials efficiently for accurate completion of reports. 10. Apply pertinent medicolegal polices and procedures when necessary in the transcription process. ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR THIS ONLINE COURSE: Due to the nature of this course, there will not be attendance records maintained; however, you are expected to keep current with all material as presented via the Web postings. Students must log on to the website regularly and complete the assigned quizzes, homework and tests. In this online course, the week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday. This allows you to work on Saturdays and Sundays in addition to the remainder of the week. Exams are to be taken as scheduled. In this collaborative learning environment, participation plays a very important part. Because we learn from each other, I encourage students to initiate and respond regularly, making sure students express ideas clear and that they are substantive. Share your idea and experiences with your colleagues and ask them questions. ASSIGNMENTS/LATE SUBMISSION POLICY: Once you have received books and have enrolled in this training program, you have 15 weeks to finish all assignments. Extensions may be offered in special circumstances. You fee is non-refundable. Submitting Assignments: Electronic Submission REQUIRED.

Read Chapter Type Pathology terminology. 3. Proofreading Chapter 5 cases to be typed: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Week #5: 1. Read Chapter Type Obstetrics/Gynecology terminology. 3. Week #15: FINAL EXAM GRADING POLICY: Your course grade will be determined as follows: Workbook Assignments Tests (10x200 points each) Cumulative Final Exam Total ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Students are expected to do their own work on exams, quizzes, and assignments. Neither the text, nor any other source of information, such as notes, may be used during exams, unless otherwise specified by the instructor. It is acceptable to use the text and notes when completing online chapter quizzes and tests. Any instance of academic dishonesty will result in a failing grade for the course.
