REFLECTIONS OF YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR The reflections/questionnaire/survey is intended to be sent to each student applying for graduation as a psychology major and for whom we must certify completion of the requirements for the major. Congratulations, you are on the verge of completing your undergraduate degree and graduating from the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences with a major in psychology. We are interested in your reflections on your experiences within our department. In particular, we will ask you some questions about 4 central competencies around which we build our curriculum and are part of the General Education model that UC has adopted: critical thinking, effective communication, knowledge integration, and social responsibility. We want to know the extent to which you believe you have achieved and can demonstrate proficiency in these areas. What has contributed to your acquiring these competencies and what has made it difficult? This reflection has no bearing on your being granted your degree. We ask these questions ask for your aid so that we, the faculty, can make improvements. While we are required to conduct and assessment we also want to. This reflection also allows you to go back over your years here and integrate your experience, perhaps to realize what your efforts have produced for you. OVERALL, how would you rate your experience as a major? As a % of all courses taken as a major, how many of them would you consider Good Just OK Not Good What contributes to a course being good? What makes a course bad?
BACCALAUREATE COMPETENCIES CRITICAL THINKING Critical Thinking is the ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information and ideas from multiple perspectives. It includes the capability for analysis, problem solving, logical argument, the application of scholarly and scientific methods, the accurate use of terminology, and information literacy. activities provided you with opportunities to become proficient at Critical Thinking?
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION Effective Communication embraces aural, visual, and language arts, including the ability to read, write, speak, and listen for personal and professional communication. Among important language capabilities are proper usage, appropriate style, and the ability to formulate a coherent, well-support argument using language appropriate to academic and public discourse. activities provided you with opportunities to become proficient at Effective Communication?
KNOWLEDGE INTEGRATION Knowledge Integration is the ability to fuse information and concepts from multiple disciplines for personal, professional, and civic enhancement. An ability to evaluate critically one s one views and those of others requires that the individual be able to access, judge, and compare diverse fields of knowledge. This ability enables a student to discover connections between different disciplines and their real-life applications. activities provided you with opportunities to become proficient at Knowledge Integration?
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Social Responsibility is the ability to apply knowledge and skills gained through the undergraduate experience for the advancement of society. A student should understand the historical ethical reasoning, contemporary social and ethical issues, and to promote knowledge, skills, and attitudes that encourage responsible civic engagement. activities provided you with opportunities to become proficient at Social Responsibility?
AND OTHERS Other than these 4 competencies, what would you say were the positive effects of being a psychology major? What experiences or courses seem the most important for you at this point? What other (less positive) experiences do you want us to know about? What should we improve? What would make the experience for a psychology major more impactful? NEXT What are your plans for the future? What will you be doing in the near future?
