Dear Colleagues, EDITORIAL The invitation sent by Northern Greece State School Teachers of English Association to Central Macedonia Primary and Secondary Education Regional Administration is a special honour to us. The fact that the State School is required to face up to the challenges of contemporary society and to produce well-equipped citizens increases our responsibility as educators and, at the same time, constitutes a tremendous challenge towards linking the School Class with the real world around us. English language instruction is already absolutely necessary in the context of the multicultural Greek society and becomes, therefore, the focal point of new teaching programs introduced by the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs. The fact that English is introduced in early Primary Education in 800 all-day primary schools constitutes one of the innovative objectives launched by the new curricula. The pupils establish contact with diversity via the foreign language at a very small age. This enables them to familiarise themselves with cultural diversity in all its manifestations. Both the audio-visual material used and the methodology employed are such that they can well respond to our young pupils' needs. Foreign language instruction is accomplished by means of teaching methods that simulate a journey through colours and games. Very young learners, as they are described in the title of this one-day seminar, are tomorrow's global citizens who will be required to communicate in English and will need to have their linguistic competence certified through some kind of language knowledge certification system. The aim of the Ministry is for this certification, as well as the knowledge it requires, to be obtained in school. In order for this aim to be achieved, broader planning is required, which is to start with the first grades of formal school and to be deployed through to the final ones. Within this framework, an increase in the number of teaching hours in later grades is described in a way that enhances learning and knowledge assimilation. The Regional Administration assists and will continue to assist with a view to reaching this target, always being on the side of the teachers that have undertaken this responsibility with perseverance, patience and respect for the learner. In conclusion, I would like to congratulate Northern Greece State School Teachers of English Association, the School Advisors, as well as the Anatolia College English Department on holding this one-day seminar, together with all the people that chose to attend it. I would like to express the conviction that what will be heard will contribute to knowledge acquisition and to the exchange of views among the members of an educational community that have a lot to say and share.
