The United States Department of Labor has identified nursing as the fastest growing occupation in terms of growth through It is estimated that more than one million new and replacement nurses will be needed to fill the health care needs of our nation over the next seven years. In response to the health care demands, the college has implemented a dynamic array of health care programs. 5 Mississippi Delta Rural Health Care Training Partnership Coahoma Community College was awarded funding by the United States Department of Labor to address the needs of the health care industry by expanding the college s training capacity to help ameliorate the nursing shortage in the Northwest Delta Region. The Rural Health Care Grant has allowed the college to admit a second class into the Licensed Practical Nursing Program and implement the LPN/RN Fast Track (RN Accelerated) Program. 8 Associate Degree Nursing Registered Nurses he Associate Degree Nursing Program offers training that prepares students for leadership roles in the care of patients. The Associate Degree Nursing Program has two programs of study: a traditional 2-year RN Track and the 1-year LPN/RN Fast Track. The program s mission is to graduate nurses who are ready to enter the workforce, eager to learn, and have an attitude of professionalism and loyalty to the profession of nursing. Admission into Associate Degree Nursing Program is highly competitive. Traditional 2-year RN Track The Traditional 2-year RN Track is a 1-summer, 4-semester program with an optional internship at the end of the freshman year. Admission to this program requires the completion of thirty (30) hours of prerequisite courses (see page 9). LPN/RN Fast Track (RN Accelerated) The LPN/RN Fast Track is a 1-summer, 2-semester program developed to address the nursing shortage of the Northwest Mississippi. Applicants for this program must meet the regular admission requirements for the traditional program and have completed one (1) year of continuous clinical practice. The ADN curriculum is comprised of both classroom lectures, and clinical activities. Students are prepared to take the lead for directing the nursing care of patients with acute and chronic illness. Students are exposed to theory and practices that develop their ability to perform preventative, rehabilitative, and therapeutic intervention technique. Furthermore, students are taught the importance of patient education, cultural and psychosocial aspects, and ethics. Credential Successful completion of the ADN program is celebrated with a pinning ceremony. The student is then awarded an Associate Degree of Nursing and is eligible to take the National Council Licensing Exam for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). Successful candidates are granted licensure through the Mississippi State Department of Nursing. Registered Nurses are able to work in acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, clinics, and outpatient services. 6
9 Associate Degree Nursing Registered Nurses Admission Requirements-Associate Degree Nursing Program 2-year RN & LPN/RN Fast Track (RN Accelerated) Step 1: The applicant must meet all admission requirements for Coahoma Community College. Step 2: The applicant must complete all prerequisite courses by the end of the first summer term. (A cumulative G.P.A. of 2.50 is required on all prerequisite courses.) Anatomy & Physiology I and II, and Microbiology courses must not be more than 5 years old at the time of admission. Some applicants may be eligible to petition for a recency waiver. Step 3: The applicant must provide verification of ACT scores. Step 4: The applicant must provide copy of Adult Immunization Record. (MMR, TB Skin Test, Adult TD) Step 5: The LPN/RN applicant must provide copy of current Mississippi LPN license and proof of 1 year of continuous clinical practice. 10 Allied Health Programs Practical Nursing Program icensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses care for the sick, injured, convalescent, and disabled. Licensed Practical Nurses work as members of health care teams that provide basic nursing care, administer medications, report and document patients signs and symptoms, and carry out therapeutic and rehabilitative activities. The Licensed Practical Nursing Program at Coahoma Community College is a 12 month certificate program. Students now have two opportunities for admission into the program. The first class is admitted in August, with the second class being admitted in January. Practical Nursing training is taught by highly qualified registered nurses. Through a combination of classroom and laboratory training, students are provided with interpersonal and technical skills necessary for success. Furthermore, the program prepares students for the National Council Licensing Exam for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN). Credential Upon successful completion of the LPN program and (NCLEX-PN), the student will receive license through the Mississippi Board of Nursing. Afterwards, the LPN can work in acute and convalescent hospitals, physicians offices, clinics, and other health care facilities. 11 Allied Health Programs Certified Nursing Assistant ursing assistants provide hands-on care to patients in acute and convalescent facilities. They are usually the eyes and ears of the health care team. The Certified Nursing Assistant program at Coahoma Community College is an eight (8) week program offered during the Fall and Spring semesters. Furthermore, individuals can enroll in either the morning class (8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) or evening class (5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.). Admission into the CNA program requires that the individual have a high school diploma or GED, be 18 years of age, and have a score of 8 on the TABE Test. Nursing Assistant training is taught by highly qualified registered nurses. Through a combination of classroom and laboratory training, students are provided with basic nursing skills (bed making, bathing, vital signs, skin care, etc.) and familiarization with simple treatments and procedures. Furthermore, the program prepares students for the credentialing examination. Credential Upon successful completion of CNA program and credentialing examination, the student will receive the Certified Nursing Assistant credential through the Mississippi National Aide Assessment Program. Program Cost Fees for participation in the CNA are $450. This includes books, tuition, uniforms and CPR training. 9 5
12 Allied Health Programs Emergency Medical Technologist-Basic re you interested in a health care profession that is fast-paced and highly impactful? If you answered yes, then becoming an Emergency Medical Technologist is a career opportunity worth exploring. EMTs are individuals who have the responsibility of transporting patients to and from health care facilities. They are usually the first to respond to serious medical situations. The Emergency Medical Technologist (EMT-B) program at Coahoma Community College is a semester-long program offered during the fall. Classes meet weekly on Monday and Wednesday. Admission into the EMT-B program requires that the individual have a high school diploma or GED, be 18 years of age, and have a score of 10 on the TABE Test. Through a combination of classroom and laboratory training, students are provided with skills and knowledge related to life-support measures, the use of medical emergency equipment and supplies. Students will be equipped with the emergency skills to assess a patient s condition and manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies. Furthermore, students are prepared for successful completion of the credentialing examination. Also, the EMT-B program serves as the first step for individuals who want to become paramedics. Credential Upon successful completion of the EMT-B program and credentialing examination, the student is eligible for employment as and EMT-Basic in a Medical Transport facility or agency. Program Cost Fees for participation in the EMT-B program is $400. This includes books, tuition, sphygmonometer, and stethoscope. 10
13 Allied Health Programs Phlebotomy/EKG Technology oday it is very important to have a diverse set of occupational skills. This is extremely important and beneficial in the world of health care. Understanding Phlebotomy/EKG Technology allows you to acquire a diverse set of skills necessary to provide high quality health care. Phlebotomy involves drawing a patient s blood for the purpose of analysis and diagnosis. EKG Technology is used for the purpose of analysis and diagnosis of a patient s heart rate. The Phlebotomy/EKG Technology program is one designed on the principle of cross-training. Admission into the program requires that the individual have a high school diploma or GED, be at least 18 years of age, and have a score of 10 on the TABE Test. Candidates are admitted during the Fall semester. The program lasts two semesters. Students meet weekly on Thursday and Friday evenings (5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) and every other Saturday (8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.). A combination of classroom and laboratory training, provides students with skills and knowledge necessary for successful completion of the credentialing examination. Credential Upon successful completion of this program, students receive a Phlebotomy credential through the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or others. EKG certification is received through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). Afterwards, the graduate will be eligible for employment in the health care workplace in both non-invasive cardiology as an EKG Technologist and in the Laboratory as a Phlebotomist. Program Cost Fees for participation in the Phlebotomy/EKG Technology program is $1,200. This includes books, tuition, and uniforms. 11 5
14 Allied Health Programs Polysomnography olysomnography is the study of sleep disorders. Polysomnography primarily includes the monitoring of the patient s airflow through the mouth and nose, blood pressure, electrocardiographic activity, blood oxygen level, brain wave pattern, eye movement, and the movement of respiratory muscle and limbs. The Polysomnography Program at Coahoma Community College is a two semester program. Admission into the program requires that the individual have a high school diploma (transcript), be 18 years of age, and have a score of 10 on the TABE Test. Students are admitted into the program during the fall semester. Students meet weekly on Thursday and Friday evenings (5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) and every other Saturday (8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.). Polysomnography training is conducted by highly qualified individuals. Small class sizes allow for personal interaction between instructors and students. Through a combination of classroom and laboratory training, students are provided with skills necessary to become a successful sleep technologist. Credential Upon successful completion of the Polysomnography program, the student will receive license through the Board of Registered Polysomnographers (BRPT) to become Registered Polysomnography Technologists (RPSGT). Afterwards, the RPSGT is eligible for employment in a sleep related breathing disorders laboratory or a sleep disorders center. Program Cost Fees for participation in the Practical Nursing program are $2,300. This includes books, tuition, uniforms. 12
15 Allied Health Programs Respiratory Therapy Program ost people take breathing for granted. But for the thousands of Americans who suffer from breathing problems, each breath is a major accomplishment. Respiratory therapy is the evaluating, treating, and caring for patients with breathing disorders (asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema), but also heart attack and accident victims, premature infants, and people with cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, or AIDS. The Respiratory Therapy program combines training in the technical aspects or respiratory therapy and general education courses necessary to provide the student with the knowledge to provide direct care to patients with respiratory/cardiac health problems. Upon successful completion of the Respiratory Therapy program, the graduate is awarded the Associate of Science General Technology degree. Furthermore, the program prepares students for the credentialing examination. Credential After successfully completing the program and the National Board for Respiratory Entry-Level Examination, the receives the credential of Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT). The CRT is then encouraged to take the Registered Exam (Advance-Level). Program Selection Admission into the Respiratory Therapy Program is highly competitive. Participants are selected based on the following ranking system: ACT score (minimum of 16) Prerequisite courses G.P.A. Transcripts Interview Admission Requirements Respiratory Therapy Program 1. The applicant must be admitted to Coahoma Community College. 2. The applicant must have a minimum ACT score of The applicant must be at least 17 years of age. Must be 18 before clinical practice begins. 4. The applicant must complete all prerequisite courses as specified for the Respiratory program prior to August of the year applying.* 5. The applicant must have a cumulative G.P.A. of no less than 2.0 in any attempted college course and a minimum of 2.5 in any science and math courses. 6. The applicant must interview with the Respiratory Therapy Selection Committee. 16 Summer Nursing Residency Program he Summer Nursing Residency Program (SNRP) is a program funded by the United States Department of Labor for high school juniors and seniors interested in pursuing a career in nursing. During the two-week program, students are given a first-hand look at nursing through classroom experiences, clinical or shadowing activities, hands-on practice, and on-campus living. An educational field trip is included in the program to expose students to nursing in other areas of the United States. Admission into SNRP is highly competitive. Students wishing to participate in SNRP must be a high school junior or senior, have a strong desire and interest in entering into the nursing profession, and have a minimum of a 2.75 (4.0 scale) or 3.75 (5.0 scale) grade point average. Applications are evaluated on the basis of grades, letters of recommendation, personal statements, and other qualifications. Applications are accepted beginning December 1, 2007 and should arrive by March 1, 2008 for consideration. 14
