Technology Pilot Overview 1

Assumptions This technology initiative will cause more students to engage in school work resulting in higher academic achievement. Hardcover textbooks will soon become extinct. I m planning to redirect funding from all budget categories to fund this technological initiative. taff training will be needed to maximize our abilities to use technology. Access for all students must be achieved. 2

Common Core The Common Core tate tandards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy. 3

Common Core In English language arts, the standards call for students to use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing, as well as to interact and collaborate with others. The College and Career Readiness standards that anchor the K-12 standards call for students to learn skills through technology and multimedia. Mathematically proficient students should know which tools help them perform different tasks, according to the standards.

Common Core Assessments Louisiana is one of 24 states participating in the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC. The group, which was awarded a $186 million Race to the Top Assessment grant in eptember 2010, is developing a common set of K-12 assessments in English Language Arts and mathematics that are centered on measuring student progress based on the knowledge and skills necessary for high school graduates to be prepared for college and careers. The assessments, set to be ready in time for the school year, will mark student progress from 3rd to 12th grade. 6 ource:

PARCC Assessments In conjunction with Common Core, Louisiana will replace current state assessments during the school year with PARCC Assessment that are aligned with the Common Core tate tandards All students in grades 3-12 will take assessments on an electronic device. The electronic device can be a Desktop, Laptop or Tablet. Each district is responsible for providing the necessary technology.

Assessment Requires Technology The school district is currently conducting a technology needs assessment to determine the number of devices in the district and whether we have the number of devices necessary for the upcoming assessments. The state has provided a tool to help us in determining our level of readiness. The state is also seeking vendors to provide technology at reduced prices.

PARCC Readiness Results In Caddo Parish, currently 3 out of 46 schools have an adequate number of computers that meet current minimum computer hardware specifications for online testing in In order to bring all schools in Caddo Parish up to the minimum testing readiness level of a 7-to-1 student to computer ratio, the district will need to either purchase an additional 2,814 devices and/or upgrade some of the 2,952 computers that potentially could meet the new minimum computer hardware specifications. 9

PARCC Readiness A 1GHz processor and 1Gb of RAM is required Windows 7 is Required on Computers A 10 class display is required The ipad tablet is a portable option that has been tentatively approved for testing 10

Technology Infusion The primary goal of the technology pilot is to become an integral part of the instructional process that will enhance student academic achievement through professional development creating a collaborative, hands-on approach to increase student learning and achieve PARCC readiness

Pilots Pilots will be initiated at: Elementary chools Tablets, MART Tables and Internet Resources Middle chools Tablets using online resources and some online textbooks High chools Bring Your Own Device MART Boards and MART VE software

Pilots Pilots include the use of existing technology MART Boards Laptops Internet Resources 13

Pilots Pilots will also include new resources and technology Web-Based Core Content upport for Teachers that is Common Core Aligned Tablets Bring-Your-Own-Device MART VE (Makes any Internet Device an Interactive Clicker) E-Textbooks

Pilots Technology will grant Autism students new and amazing opportunities by fostering enhanced communication, independence, daily life skills, and developmental growth. More importantly, the ipad gives those without a voice a chance to be heard. Technology apps will allow teachers and parents to create new opportunities for their children. 15

Future Technology Plan The results of the pilots will be the impetus that drives the revisions of our district technology plan and determine purchases that will be made in the school district for PARCC Readiness, instructional needs, and Common Core requirements.

Elementary Objective To maximize student engagement through the use of technology Implement the use of tablets and specific Internet resources at North Highlands Caddo Heights hreve Island Eden Gardens Judson Mooretown Implement the use of tablets with specific apps for autistic students at North Highlands 18

Middle chools Objective: To maximize student engagement through the use of technology Implement the use of tablets in select middle schools Donnie Bickham Ridgewood CMCT Autistic Class 19

High chool Pilot Objective To maximize student engagement through the use of technology Implement a Bring Your Own Device pilot and specific MART Board training at Booker T. Washington outhwood Northwood ecure student Internet access Huntington Autistic class 20

Bring Your Own Device High chool Use mart VE to turn all BYOD devices into student responders. Provided free for pilot schools for the remainder of the school year. tudents will be able to complete quizzes, tests, and polls from their own devices Research topics assigned by the teacher Use Edmodo as a means to access assignments from teachers 22

Tablets Multiple sources are available that will allow students who use tablets to supplement the regular textbook with online E-Textbooks and other Internet resources for students and teachers 23

MART Boards and Interactive Tables Objective To identify teachers at select elementary and high schools to be trained to be the most proficient users of the MART Board in instruction 24

MART Interactive Tables Elementary chool Each elementary school in the pilot will be allowed to use one mart Interactive Table for the remainder of the school year. 25

ART & MUIC Three art and music teachers will pilot the use of ipads in their classrooms. Each classroom will pilot ipads. 26

Professional Development All teachers in the pilot will receive initial and ongoing professional development. 27

Timeline November Introduce the pilot to schools et Professional Development training dates Research CPB Policy 28

Timeline December Deliver initial professional development for all pilots Pilot presentation to the Caddo Parish chool Board Propose amending or suspending CPB policies governing electronic device usage. Present proposed amended CPB policy governing electronic device use to the Board for consideration or request permission to suspend the enforcement of the policy for pilot schools 29

Timeline 2013 Implement pilots at selected schools beginning in January Provide follow-up professional development at pilot school sites and at the Caddo Teacher Technology Center Ensure pilot schools are PARCC-ready by the end of the school year 30

Ongoing Assessments Current ongoing assessments will be used to gauge the effectiveness of the pilots Performance eries DIBEL Eagle Aimsweb 31

Evaluation Compare achievement of students in the pilot with those who did not participate in the pilot. Did the use of this technology or resources produce an increase in student achievement? Were students positively engaged in the classroom setting during the teaching and learning process? Are we PARCC-ready? Did technology enhance instruction for autistic students? 32

What Happens Next? Determine how pilots will be replicated and expanded to include more schools. Identify funding sources to provide appropriate technology for use in expanded pilots. Develop a two-year plan to include all schools after all pilots are evaluated. Achieve PARCC readiness 36

In-Kind Contributions Contributions made by vendors for the pilot 5 MART Tables $30,000 Espresso Elementary Website $ 7,500 MART VE $12,000 Total $49,500 37
