2 Benefits of Completing an Internship Why should I complete an internship? To learn more about your personal strengths and areas of interest To gain a greater understanding of psychology-related career opportunities To help to clarify your future goals To challenge existing beliefs about helping professionals To gain knowledge, skills, and experience as well as heightened selfawareness To enhance your qualifications for employment and for graduate school

3 Agency Expectations of Interns What expectations do agencies have of their undergraduate interns? Typical (3 credit hour) internships involve 9-10 hours a week for a 16-week semester. In considering possible internships, talk with agency representatives about what specific time requirements the agency has. Although most internships are unpaid, agency representatives will expect you to fulfill responsibilities professionally and conscientiously. Seek clarification of the exact nature of responsibilities you will be assuming as an intern. While undergraduate students typically cannot provide direct mental health counseling, they can help with tasks such as: designing, coordinating, and promoting mental health workshops assisting children and other populations with improving their social skills providing support to persons with chronic mental illness helping individuals with developmental disabilities to engage in recreational activities and social interaction helping with clinically-relevant data entry and analysis attending select staff meetings and training seminars shadowing and conferring with mental health professionals reviewing agency web sites and publications

4 assisting with grant preparation and other efforts to secure funding performing various clerical tasks (which furnish interns with a heightened appreciation of the agencies scope of practice) creating or updating educational materials for general dissemination with sufficient preparation and training, some internship sites also allow students the chance to: o answer crisis hotline calls o assist victims of sexual assault or domestic violence o co-facilitate support groups

5 Academic Requirements What are the academic requirements for going on and completing an internship? To register for an internship, students majoring in psychology must be of at least junior status and in good academic standing. Internships are graded on S/U basis and credit hours gained through completion of an internship do not count toward fulfilling the requirements of your psychology major or minor; however, internship credit hours can be applied toward graduation. The general guideline for internship credit hours is that you must work 3 hours/week at a site to earn 1 credit hour during a 16-week semester (48 hours of total time devoted to your internship for each credit hour earned). Identify a faculty member who is willing to serve as your internship sponsor (advisor). Confer with your faculty sponsor before registering for your internship to: discuss what you will be doing (i.e., where you will be interning, how many credit hours you are taking, what responsibilities you expect to assume, etc.) discuss your faculty sponsor s academic requirements For students who have Dr. Craig Vickio as their faculty sponsor, the academic expectations include: keeping a journal

6 submitting a short midterm reflections paper meeting with Dr. Vickio around midterm submitting your journal at midterm and at the end of your internship preparing a poster describing your internship experience and participating in the biannual Psychology Department Undergraduate Poster Symposium meeting with Dr. Vickio as your internship is concluding to reflect together on your experience completing a brief internship course evaluation submitting a form signed by your internship site supervisor verifying fulfillment of the agency s requirements consulting with Dr. Vickio on an as-needed basis about any concerns that might arise during your internship Should you choose a different faculty sponsor, the academic requirements are liable to vary somewhat. You and your faculty sponsor should agree on these requirements prior to beginning your internship.

7 Preparing for an Internship What can I do to prepare for an internship? Identify your personal values, interests, and skills Learn more about the types of internship sites that coincide with your values, interests, and skills Talk with students who have completed internships Consult with the internship coordinator to learn more about how to prepare for an internship Engage in volunteer work at particular sites to gain skills and experience that will help qualify you for an internship Consider enrolling in PSYC 4400 the Internship Skills Training Course This course is a graded, one-credit hour seminar typically offered in spring semester. It is designed to prepare students to pursue an internship. To register, students must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in psychology coursework, must be in good academic standing overall, and must be of junior or higher status. This seminar is not required to go on an internship, but it is highly recommended.

8 Identifying and Securing an Internship How should I go about identifying and securing an internship? You are expected to find your own internship site. For suggestions of possible sites, contact Dr. Craig Vickio, Undergraduate Psychology Internship Coordinator (cvickio@bgsu.edu). Some settings include comprehensive mental health centers, victims advocacy services, consulting firms, crisis hotlines, market research companies, university counseling centers, wellness centers, disability offices, senior centers, domestic violence shelters, developmental disability agencies, and children s services. Talk with an agency representative (often the volunteer or internship coordinator) about your interest in pursuing an internship. Ask about: the availability of internships the application process specific responsibilities assumed by interns Once you have a promising lead on an internship opportunity, you will need to identify a faculty sponsor. Talk with your faculty sponsor about specific academic responsibilities. Talk with agency representatives about their expectations of you. After securing the necessary approvals from the agency and your faculty sponsor, you may then sign up for PSYC 4890.
