6 Exceptional Financial Performance and Growth INDIVIDUAL WINNER Melissa Shine - Physicians Organization Melissa, the billing reimbursement manager for the North Region CBO, initiated a process where the registrars could questions to her and she would be prepared with the answers at upcoming meetings. Her efforts to keep staff trained and informed eliminated rework and cut down on printing and postage from additional billing. OTHER INDIVIDUAL NOMINEES Kristi Berry - St. Clare Health Center Stefanie Pier - Cardinal Glennon Children s Medical Center TEAM WINNERS Access Center Team - Cardinal Glennon Children s Medical Center When community physicians call to transfer patients or to talk to one of SSM Cardinal Glennon s specialists, they re frustrated when they can t find the help they need or are asked to make a choice from a voice mail menu. The Cardinal Glennon Access Center opened in October 2009; 150 calls are received on average each day. Being the first pediatric access center in St. Louis, SSM Cardinal Glennon s competitors later followed their lead. Ambulatory Services - SSM Center for Sleep Disorders Team - SSM St. Joseph Hospital West In November 2009, Ambulatory Services opened a sleep program at SSM St. Joseph Hospital West with a budget to provide 30 tests per month. The success of the program grew steadily and rapidly. In the first quarter of 2010, the Sleep Lab at West doubled their projections. Starting in the third quarter, volume has exceeded 100 tests per month and has required the team to develop an expansion plan. Emergency Department - St. Clare Health Center Health Information Management - DePaul Health Center Lead Extraction Program - St. Mary s Health Center Office Redesign Team - Physicians Organization Congratulations to SSM Health Care St. Louis Exceptional Performance Award winners and nominees! We ask a lot of our colleagues and co-workers, and in turn, we recognize the great work that is accomplished. That is why events like tonight s are so important. Events like this ensure that we take the time to thank and congratulate the people that help make SSM Health Care - St. Louis what it is. Jim Sanger, SSM Health Care St. Louis president/chief executive officer EXCEPTIONAL Celebration The exceptional year of 2010 for SSM Health Care St. Louis was commemorated with an exceptional event Jan. 11. The first Exceptional Performance Awards Banquet, held at the Marriott West St. Louis Hotel, honored the individuals and teams who deliver on our promise of Best Care. Best Results. Nominated by their colleagues, all of the candidates for the network Exceptional Performance Awards were celebrated at entity events last fall. From these candidates, individual and team winners were chosen in four categories: patient care, commitment, innovation, and financial performance and growth. As President Jim Sanger noted: Even though there are a limited amount of awards that will be handed out tonight, everyone here is already a winner. And you all deserve our thanks and gratitude. Please join in celebrating the nominees and winners of our Exceptional Performance Awards. Winners descriptions are quoted from their nomination forms. For more photos capturing event highlights, visit our Flickr page at flickr.com/photos/ssmhealthcarestlouis.
7 Exceptional Patient Care INDIVIDUAL WINNERS Debbie Widaman - St. Joseph Health Center Debbie has worked in the OB department at SSM St. Joseph Health Center for 34 years! She particularly excels when a patient and family has experienced a pregnancy loss. She reaches out with understanding and compassion, taking the time to comfort them during their unfortunate situation. Sharon Broeckelmann St. Joseph Hospital West Sharon is an ICU nurse and has worked for SSM Health Care for more than 35 years. Sharon comforted two children involved in a car accident who didn t yet know their mother had died at the scene. Sharon comforted the children, rocking and holding them, until the rest of their family arrived from out of state. OTHER INDIVIDUAL NOMINEES Barbara Clark - St. Mary s Health Center Maureen Deutman - St. Clare Health Center Jerri Johnson - DePaul Health Center Mandie Marschel - St. Joseph Hospital West Candice Robnett - Cardinal Glennon Children s Medical Center Amber White - Physicians Organization TEAM WINNER Code Stroke Team DePaul Health Center, SSM Neurosciences Institute The Code Stroke Team is dedicated to the rapid assessment of patients experiencing stroke-type symptoms with the goal of early intervention to decrease life-altering effects. Team members immediately come together from different departments to assess and expedite proper treatment. The team is an excellent example of how teams from different departments work together to achieve best care, best results for potential stroke patients. Access Line Team - SSM Health Care St. Louis Cardiac Cath Lab - St. Mary s Health Center Emergency Department - St. Joseph Hospital West Family Birthplace SSM Maternity Care, St. Clare Health Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - Cardinal Glennon Children s Medical Center Telemetry Team - St. Joseph Health Center Exceptional Innovation INDIVIDUAL WINNERS Timothy Pratt, M.D. Chief Medical Officer, St. Clare Health Center Dr. Pratt is innovative in his approach with the medical staff, his collaboration with nursing and his constant vigilance for the safety of all patients. He led the way for SSM St. Clare Health Center s Physician Champion rounding, which focuses on core measures, length of stay, safety and potential for hospital-acquired conditions. Stacy Wilson - St. Joseph Health Center Stacy has shown exceptional dedication to stroke care at SSM St. Joseph Health Center since the opening of its Intermediate Care Unit last January. On her own time, Stacy worked to develop an apron that has several activities sewn on that are a safe distraction for patients who are confused and afraid. OTHER INDIVIDUAL NOMINEES Jessica Chambers - DePaul Health Center Kate Hodge - SSM Health Care St. Louis Jenny Reschke - Cardinal Glennon Children s Medical Center Jeffrey Sutter - St. Mary s Health Center Exceptional Commitment INDIVIDUAL WINNER Maria Stiffler SSM Heart Institute, St. Joseph Health Center Maria has been in her position less than a year, but has made a very positive impact on the cardiac cath labs at DePaul Health Center, St. Joseph Health Center and St. Joseph Hospital West. Staff engagement across the three cardiac campuses is exceptional, which is a reflection of Maria s team-oriented leadership style. Maria displays exceptional commitment on a daily basis, and leads with excellence for SSMSTL, her staff and our patients. OTHER INDIVIDUAL NOMINEES Tracey Ahrens - Cardinal Glennon Children s Medical Center Jennifer Crawford - DePaul Health Center Stephanie Dillas - SSM Medical Group, SSM St. Mary s Gastroenterology Donna Robinson - St. Clare Health Center TEAM WINNERS 3 North / 3 North Clinical Support Nurses SSM St. Clare Health Center 3 North at SSM St. Clare is a very fast paced cardiac floor, not only with a very high acuity patient population, but also a high procedure base mixed so that nearly half of their patients go home every day. Without fabulous teamwork, this level of activity would be daunting but this team of talented nurses came together and created an environment that patients love. Centralized Scheduling Team North Operating Group The North Operating Group Centralized Scheduling Team identified an opportunity to improve customer satisfaction by decreasing the wait time for scheduling. They determined that they would be able to positively impact wait times by cross-training all of the NOG schedulers to schedule for multiple hospitals. They also had zero turnovers during the transition. Lab Education Council - St. Mary s Health Center Radiology Employee Satisfaction Team - St. Joseph Hospital West Radiology Patient Satisfaction Team - St. Joseph Health Center Respiratory Care - Cardinal Glennon Children s Medical Center SSM Orthopedics Joint Replacement Center - DePaul Health Center TEAM WINNER Laboratory Team - SSM St. Mary s Health Center One department can truly impact the success of another. Emergency Department patients become dissatisfied if they have to wait too long. One of the reasons for patient delay is waiting for lab results. The SSM St. Mary s Laboratory Team made it their mission to reduce turnaround time for lab testing from the ED. They took ownership. Before focusing on this area, the turnaround time for ED lab tests was longer than expected seven out of 10 times, or 70 percent of the time. Today, that percentage is down to an amazing 2.5 percent. davinci Surgical Team - DePaul Health Center Futures Nursing Academy - SSM Health Care St. Louis Laboratory Team - St. Joseph Health Center Patient Care Specialists Team - St. Clare Health Center Pharmacy Services Shared Accountability Team - St. Joseph Hospital West St. Louis Cord Blood Bank - Cardinal Glennon Children s Medical Center
