The Missionary Diocese of Congo gained its first bishop ordinary on the Feast of St. Hedwig, Oct. 16, 2012, with the consecration of the Rt. Rev. Steven Ayule-Milenge at the Church of the Holy Guardian Angels, Lantana, Florida, U.S.A. His concecration brings to four the number of ACC bishops in Africa. The others are the Rt. Rev. Wilson Garang (Aweil), the Rt. Rev. Alan Kenyon-Hoare (Southern Africa) and the Rt. Rev. Solomzi Samson Mentjies (Eastern Cape). Bishop Garang s diocese is located in South Sudan; those of Bishop Kenyon-Hoare and Bishop Mentjies are in the Republic of South Africa. The ACC also has a missionary district in Kenya and is active in Rwanda and the Republic of Cameroon. Archbishop Haverland was the chief consecrator. Co-consecrators were the Rt. Rev. D. Presley Hutchens (retired, New Orleans; Episcopal Visitor, Holy Trinity) and the Rt. Rev. Rommie M. Starks (Midwest). Other participating bishops were the Rt. Rev. Brian Iverach (Australia and New Zealand), the Rt. Rev. Edward E. La Cour (Assistant Bishop, South), the Rt. Rev. Donald F. Lerow (Military Prelate and Episcopal Visitor, Mid-Atlantic States) and the Most Rev. Peter D. Robinson, Archbishop of the United Episcopal Church of North America. The Rev. Gregory Wassen, curate at Holy Guardian Angels, preached and was deacon; the Ven. David C. Please see CONGO/5 Missionary district in Canada By the Rev. David R. Marriott SSC The Traditional Anglican Church of Canada, as the ACC in Canada is called, has been admitted to the Original Province as a missionary district. The decision to request admission came on the second day of the Canadian ACC s four-day inaugural synod at the Queen of Apostles Renewal Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, which is near Toronto. The synod lasted from the arrival of most of the delegates on the evening of Oct. 22 through the morning of Oct. 25. Archbishop Haverland chaired the synod, with the Most Rev. James E. Provence, Archbishop of the Anglican Province of Christ the King, serving as vice chairman. The two Churches have worked closely together over the last two years to preserve traditional Canadian Anglicanism following the establishment by the Roman Catholic Church of an Anglican Use ordinariate that has caused division in Canada as well as elsewhere. The College of Bishops, at its meeting the previous week, had given Archbishop Haverland authority to establish a missionary district in Canada. He has appointed the Very Rev. Robert S. H. Mansfield SSC as vicar general of the district. Father Mansfield serves St. John s, Parry Sound and St. Mary s, Chapleau, both in Ontario. The final step in formalizing the new jurisdiction will take place in October 2013 when the XX Provincial Synod is expected to admit it to membership and add a canonical description of its boundaries to the ACC s canons. At present, the Canadian Church has nine congregations, three Please see CANADA/4 Non-Profit U.S. Postage P A I D Permit No Denver, CO ACC S WEBSITE GETS AN UPDATE After nearly a year of planning, information gathering and coding, the ACC s updated provincial website, anglicancatholic.org, was introduced on Sept. 20. Overseeing the project was the Rev. Jonathan S. Foggin, administrative assistant to Archbishop Haverland. Coding was done by a team of programmers from Plexus Web Design in Athens, Georgia, U.S.A. ACC contributors include Archbishop Haverland, the Rt. Rev. Damien Mead, the Rt. Rev. Donald F. Lerow, the Rev. Canon Matthew Kirby, the Rev. Canon Stephen C. Scarlett and Joseph Sasser. The site was designed with two major goals in mind, Father Foggin said. They are: to be a tool for evangelism, and act as a forum for dissemination of accurate information about the ACC. As such, the designers wanted to be sure the site projects an image of the ACC as a living church (which it is) that exerts an appeal across generations and cultures (which it does), Father Foggin explained. This issue was printed on November 6, Adecade or so ago the Reverend Ramon Winke, who was then Ecumenical Officer of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Caracas, suggested to an ACC bishop (Bishop Roger Dawson) that we should initiate an ecumenical dialogue with Rome. Within the last year Bishop Germán Orrego-Hurtado when in Venezuela visited the Roman Catholic Church s offices where there apparently was no survival of knowledge of the ACC. In any case, the earlier suggestion began a series of events which deserve to be recorded for future reference. Memories fade, within the ACC as in Caracas and Rome. Archbishop Brother John-Charles (Vockler), FODC, who was then the ACC s Acting Primate, consulted his colleagues, who agreed that the time was right to write Rome. Earlier ecumenical approaches had been made by the ACC through the U.S. Roman Catholic Conference of Bishops and went nowhere. In effect we were told, grow and become stable and come back in 20 years. Local or personal contacts with individual Roman bishops in New York, Louisiana, and Virginia were more promising, but usually came to an end with a change in the individuals in office or with recognition that nothing further was possible without direction from Rome. Archbishop John-Charles sought advice from a Roman Catholic canon lawyer in Louisiana about the best way to approach Rome itself. In February 2005 a letter from Archbishop John-Charles was sent to Walter Cardinal Kasper, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. The letter expressed an interest in dialogue and in more cordial relations and deeper communion. It made reference to helpful earlier examples of dialogue, including the visits of Archbishop Michael Ramsey to Rome and the ongoing dialogue between the Roman Catholic and Polish National Catholic Churches. Included with the letter was information about the ACC s history and beliefs. The letter was registered, so we know it was received, but no reply to it was ever made. I might note that subsequently the ACC sent to the same office condolences upon the death of Pope John Paul II and congratulations upon the election of Pope Benedict XVI. Neither of those letters received any reply. In subsequent years I was told by Roman Catholics TEXAS PARISH MARKS PATRONAL FEAST Holy Cross, Cleveland,Texas, U.S.A. observed its patronal feast on Sept. 16 with a Choral Evensong. Music was provided by the Canterbury Chorale from St. Stephen s Episcopal Church in nearby Liberty. They are pictured with Canon James G. Monroe, priest-in-charge of Holy Cross. The Chorale presented a new version of the Prayer of St. Francis composed by their director.the service was followed by the blessing of a memorial plot and stainless-steel cross on the grounds of the church and was concluded by a spaghetti dinner.the event was attended by community leaders. Ecumenism and the Church of Rome that the letter was sent to the wrong office: it should have been sent to the Congregation for the Defense of the Faith (CDF). I have also been told that our letters probably came quickly to the attention of a cleric unsympathetic to our kind of Anglicanism probably due to a liberal bias and were destroyed. About which I might at this point comment parenthetically that if the central offices of the Roman Church are in such a state, simple and sincere traditional Anglicans might be excused for seeing considerable cause for concern. In any case, a sympathetic Roman Catholic in the Anglican Use movement told me he would see if he could get some attention for our ecumenical approach. Subsequently I was contacted by a Roman Catholic priest with, I was assured, good connections in Rome. I rehearsed the story given above. I made politely clear that we were interested in conversations, dialogue, and closer relations, but not in conversion to Roman Catholicism. No reply came to that letter from me. That, if one were counting, was a fourth unanswered letter. At this point one can only speculate, but I interpret this story as follows. First, Rome itself is internally divided. Many Roman Catholics are radicalized and closer to the ideas of the Canterbury Communion than to those of the ACC. Often an approach from Continuing Anglicans will simply be ignored, or even spiked, by such people if they are its recipients. Secondly, the folk associated with the Anglican Use movement are more traditional and sympathetic to our kind of faith. However, these people (such as Steven Cavanaugh, William Tighe, and David Burt) were and are primarily interested in bolstering their own movement by promoting conversions to Rome and by increasing the number and strength of Anglican Use organizations and Pastoral Provision congregations. The ACC might appear to such people to be a field for harvesting potential converts. Continuing Anglican approaches to Rome in strengthened such people both in their internal battle for Rome s attention to their causes and also against the hostility of liberal Roman Catholics. See, the Anglican Use people might say to other Roman Catholics, there are all these people interested in Rome, if only Rome would take our excellent advice! After Pope Benedict s Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus created a process for establishing Ordinariates for former Anglicans, the Anglican Use movement got much of what it wanted. Rome is now better able to cherry-pick Anglo-Papalists, whether Continuing Anglicans or those coming from Canterbury Communion bodies. The process of vetting and absorbing former Anglicans into Ordinariates entirely on Rome s own terms is taking years and is ongoing. A respectful Roman engagement in ecumenical dialogue with the ACC at this point might simply confuse matters in some minds. The Anglican Use people, who were glad earlier to use our existence as argument for more attention from Rome to their own existence and advice, now view us as competition, an annoyance, and an embarrassment. Some of them might also see us as a (fairly quiet and easily ignored) reproach. This history, speculation, and interpretation are of little immediate significance. I put this all down in writing so that if dialogue with Rome does someday come about, we will remember our own sincere and honest attempts from the previous decade. My sense is that the ACC has been in equal parts ignored, poorly advised, and used by Roman Catholics for their own purposes. But it was right to make the attempts we have made, and if God has not seen fit to crown those attempts with visible fruit at this time, it is not because we failed to promote the unity of Christ s Body upon earth. We have done our best, and that is all God asks of us.

3 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2012 THE TRINITARIAN 3 College of Bishops Missions, website main topics Mission work and the ACC s new provincial website dominated deliberations during the annual meeting of the Original Province s College of Bishops Oct. 18 in West Palm Beach, Florida, U.S.A. Archbishop Haverland chaired the meeting. Also present were the Rt. Rev. Steven Ayule-Milenge (Congo), the Rt. Rev. D. Presley Hutchens (Episcopal Visitor, Holy Trinity), the Rt. Rev. Brian Iverach (Australia and New Zealand), the Rt. Rev. Donald F. Lerow (Military Prelate and Episcopal Visitor, Mid-Atlantic States) and the Rt. Rev. Rommie M. Starks (Midwest). Other bishops, most of them from outside the United States, were excused for various reasons. The Most Rev. Peter D. Robinson, Archbishop of the United Episcopal Church of North America, also attended as invited guest, with seat and voice. Missions: growth and some concerns The Church in the Democratic Republic of Congo is growing, reported Bishop Ayule-Milenge, attending his first meeting as a bishop. However, his work A SPECIAL AUGUST FESTIVAL IN E. CAPE AFFIRMATION ALONG WITH CELEBRATION has been hindered by the civil war and its aftermath. This is especially true in the eastern part of the country, where Hutu militias, originally from Rwanda, have settled. During an attempted parish visitation, he said, militia members beat him so severely he was left in a coma. War is not an issue in Central Congo, he went on to say, but the churches there need to be instructed in Anglican faith and practice. The ongoing project of building schools continues, he added, but poverty remains a common problem. Archbishop Haverland praised Bishop Ayule- Milenge for his work, particularly in Central Congo, which he called the most dangerous area in the world. Turning to other mission fields, Archbishop Haverland reported on his recent visitation to Rwanda, where the ACC is growing quite rapidly. Most of the people there, he noted, come from Pentecostal backgrounds. While there is a vital, growing church in Rwanda, he told the College, the ACC must be careful that it does not become a church divorced from its Anglican backgrounds. This, he said, will continue to be a Church Life challenge in East Africa. As a possible remedy, the Archbishop thought it would be very helpful for clergy from Congo and Rwanda to visit the Missionary Diocese of the Eastern Cape in the Republic of South Africa to help cultivate an Anglican identity. The Church has also experienced good growth in Colombia, Archbishop Haverland reported. The situation in neighboring Venezuela is similar, he said, though St. Mary s in Caracas has left the ACC to join another jurisdiction. In part, the move seems to have been promoted by attempts by the Rt. Rev. Germán Orrego-Hurtado to encourage them to adopt the Book of Common Prayer, as opposed to the modern rite they had been using. Bishop Iverach reported on growth in Kenya, where a five-story mission center is under construction, mostly with funding from Australia. He also noted the recent reception of some 15 Canterbury Communion clergy from area around Lake Victoria. Encouraging signs from the Republic of Cameroon and the Philippines were also noted. Please see BISHOPS/9 Canon Stephen Scarlett, newly ordained Deacon Luzuko Ngantweni, Archdeacon Sophiwo Obridge Maqanda, and Bishop and Mrs. Mentjies all share a moment. By Sibahle Sobele August is a very special month in South Africa. It is when the role of women in the fight against racial oppression is observed and celebrated. And for Anglican Catholics in the Eastern Cape Province the month takes on particular significance. For it was in an August more than a century ago, with the signing of the Compact of 1900, that the Ethiopian Movement was welcomed into the Anglican fold. Therefore the August Festival in the Missionary Diocese of the Eastern Cape focuses chiefly on the affirmation of Anglican Catholic doctrine, faith and practice. This year s festival spanned eight days, Aug It began with the Eucharist at All Saints, New Brighton, Port Elizabeth. The Ven. Vuyisili Johnson Baatjies celebrated and the Rev. Mbulelo Lucas preached on the origins of the Church and where it stands at present. The rest of the week was given over to activities of diocesan guilds: the Men s, Girls and Youth guilds and the Mothers Union. The culminating event was on Friday, Aug. 24, with an African cuisine evening at which purely African delicacies were served. The guest speaker was the Rev. Canon Stephen C. Scarlett, executive secretary of the Missionary Diocese of St. Paul who was visiting the diocese. He spoke on the ACC and the opportunities within it for mission and evangelism. Earlier in the week, as the festivities got under way, the Rt. Rev. Solomzi Samson Mentjies, Bishop of the diocese, and the clergy went on a three-day retreat aimed at spiritual revival and also to prepare two ordinands for the ministries they were about to undertake. Participants described the retreat, led by Bishop Mentjies, as a time of refreshment and spiritual introspection, with the presence of God felt by all. Upon their return, Bishop Mentjies and the clergy met up with Canon Scarlett, the Rev. Deacon Robert Blythin and Alan Bagge, all from the United States. A tour of most of the parishes in the Port Elizabeth area followed, with the U.S. team assessing the churches needs, ministry and involvement in the community. Saturday saw a colorful service at which two men were ordained to the diaconate. The Rev. Canon Michael Williams and other brethren from his parish in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, traveled to Port Elizabeth to join in the worship and provided beautiful music accompanied by bongo drums. Bishop Mentjies celebrated in addition to ordaining and Canon Scarlett preached. All who were present still rave about the splendor and majesty that was felt by all, one observer said. Archbishop Provence and Archbishop Haverland with synod delegates and visitors. CANADA FROM PAGE 3 in British Columbia and six in Ontario. The synod s action brings these congregations, previously part of the Patrimony of the Metropolitan or the Anglican Province of Christ the King, into a cohesive whole as a missionary district. At Archbishop Haverland s request and with Archbishop Provence s gracious consent, Archbishop Provence will continue as visitor to St. Mark s, Victoria, British Columbia, which had been under APCK oversight and now is part of the ACC jurisdiction. The theme of the synod was the development of organizational stability and pastoral availability, as suggested by the Rev. Byron Woolcock (St. John s, Parry Sound) to exemplify the major challenge the Canadian Church faces in the coming years as parishes meet the Vicar General Robert Mansfield challenge of outreach, mission and growth. As the Rev. Canon Stanley R. Sinclair (St. Mark s, Victoria) discussed in a series of presentations throughout the synod, it is the importance of evangelism and growth that will restore the Church as is demanded by its commitment to the Great Commission. Following a lengthy and constructive discussion on Oct. 23, synod delegates decided by consensus to request admission to the ACC s Original Province as a missionary district. This, it was pointed out, would permit the Canadian Church to develop an infrastructure, including financial resources, adequate and supportive of the transition to a missionary diocese at a time when it is deemed appropriate for nominations to be received for a diocesan bishop. In the meanwhile, the Canadian Church will be governed by a district council and be under the authority of Father Mansfield as vicar general. On Oct. 24, the major decision having been taken, there was an opportunity to hear reports from the parishes. Delegates also heard from Archbishop Haverland on the challenges all church members face on how to make the Church an attractive group Unlike older websites, constructed with basic web coding known as html, the ACC s new site uses a highly flexible framework called Ruby on Rails. This allows for significant improvement in data management, as well as the ability to allow input from multiple users through a web portal. Canon Stanley F. Sinclair presents one of four talks on the synod theme, Pastoral Availability with Organizational Stability. of people which may respond to the support and encouragement that all need, as well as answers to the major spiritual demands placed on churchfolk as they move through life. General support was clearly evident for the need to look ahead to the growth of the Church, following the patterns so clearly demonstrated in the growth of the early Church. Canon Sinclair traced this progress in his final talk on Oct. 25, as an example of the means to achieve organizational stability by following the guidelines so clearly set out by those who have built the Church, not fearing for oneself or for the immediate challenges, but focusing on that which the Church is called to do. The synod was attended by 10 clergy delegates and nine lay delegates, with one clergy and seven lay observers, all of whom were granted seat and voice. Father Marriott serves St. Bride s in Pitt Meadows and St. Columba of Iona, both in British Columbia. The web designers, in conjunction with the College of Bishops, are putting together a team of editors who will be responsible for keeping various sections of the site current. This, along with automatic updates, such as daily readings from the breviary, will ensure that there is always fresh material online, Father Foggin said. The decision to go with the format one sees was made after extensive research into the way people use the web to gather information about churches and charitable organizations, he said. The designers wanted to present as much information as possible, while at the same time avoiding the clutter that one often encounters on the websites of other churches and denominations, he explained. Other important considerations included making sure that the site would come through clearly on mobile devices, as well as keeping material accessible to those with slower internet connections, particularly in undeveloped parts of the world. In choosing material for the site, the overriding goal was to provide a comprehensive introduction to the Church, Father Foggin said. While the designers wanted to make clear where it is that the ACC differs from other Churches and denominations, they felt it was important to define the ACC in a positive fashion, he said. As such, a great deal of work went into the Visitor s Information center. Here one will find not only writings explaining the basic tenets of belief, but videos and podcasts designed to familiarize newcomers with the faith and practice of the ACC, he went on. While at present, the site has much that is geared toward a North American and Anglophone readership, there are plans to add material that will be of use to those in the Church of India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon, the ACC s second province, as well as in non-english speaking areas where the ACC is active. Another key advance over the old site is the addition of a church locator. Here one can find any parish in the ACC, either by clicking on a map or by typing in an address, Father Foggin said. Contact information, directions through Google Maps, and links to external parish websites are also provided. It is hoped that information from the Anglican Province of Christ the King and the United Episcopal Church of North America will eventually be included, giving members of the Church information about places to attend when away from their home parish. While the site has a number of new features and greater content than before, the designers expect to add more in the months ahead. With additional funding, one can expect improved graphics, expanded audio and video content, and more interactive features, Father Foggin said. The expectation is that this will reap dividends as more and more people (particularly of a younger generation) turn to the web as a source of information. For many, the website will be the primary face of the ACC. Death Carol M. Pence Carol Maude Pence, a founding member of St. Mary Magdalene, Orange, California, U.S.A., where she was a long-time Altar Guild member, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, in Fullerton, California. 5 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2012 THE TRINITARIAN 5 Church Life CONGO FROM PAGE 1 An Italian dinner was served in McDonald Hall following the liturgy. The new bishop was born Oct. 20, 1962 in the small eastern Congo city of Mihenga. His father was an Anglican priest. He was educated in primary and secondary schools in the Democratic Republic of Congo (called Zaire from 1972 to 1997). His bachelor s degree in communications is from a Belgian university in Brussels. His theological studies were at Uganda Christian University and South Africa Theological Seminary in Johannesburg. He is at present working on a master s degree in theology. He was ordained in the Canterbury Communion as a deacon in 1996 and as a priest in Congolese Anglicans adopted the ordination of women in 2001, against the wishes of many clergy and lay members. Then-Father Ayule-Milenge went to South Africa in 2001 as a refugee following his father s murder during unrest in the eastern Congo. In South Africa he came into contact with the Continuing Church through then-father Alan Kenyon-Hoare, now Bishop of Southern Africa in the ACC. Since that time he has been associated with the Traditional Anglican Communion (in South Africa) and then with the ACC. The TAC body was established in December Father Ayule-Milenge led the Congolese Church into the ACC as a whole in November The Missionary Diocese of Congo was formally established in October 2011 by an act of the XIX Provincial Synod. The Missionary Diocese of Congo has more than 3,500 members, mostly in the Region of Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Located on the DRC s border with Rwanda, the Kivu Region is one of the most troubled areas in all of Africa, being subject to repeated invasion and devastation since the late 1990s. Much of the fighting was a continuation of the struggle between the Hutus and Tutsis that began with the Rwandan genocide of Because belligerents have included both national armies and ethnic militias, peace has been very difficult to achieve. Though a treaty was signed in 2009, the area still suffers from the aftereffects of a brutal conflict, where starvation and rape were commonly used weapons against the civilian population. The death toll from the conflict has been estimated to be as high as 5 million. News Notes ROBERT STAPLETON Bishop Ayule- Milenge with his consecrators, Bishop D. Presley Hutchens, Archbishop Haverland and Bishop Rommie M. Starks, before the altar at Holy Guardian Angels, Lantana, Florida, U.S.A., where the consecration service took place. Bishop Ayule-Milenge has been instrumental in advancing the Church s mission of bringing healing to this war-torn area. Under his leadership, the ACC has been able to carry out a great deal of humanitarian work, particularly through providing economic assistance and counseling to victims of sexual abuse. The Bishop has also been working with the regional government to provide new opportunities for education. The Missionary Diocese of Congo was recently authorized to open 25 new schools around the Province of South Kivu, one of the areas hardest hit by the fighting. Three suffragan bishops were consecrated for the Anglican Province of Christ the King on the Feast of the Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Aug. 15, 2012, in St. Peter s Cathedral, Oakland, California, U.S.A. 8 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2012 THE TRINITARIAN 9 Church Life BISHOPS FROM PAGE 3 Website: funds needed Funding for the recently introduced updated ACC provincial website was another major topic. Design of the revamped site cost between $8,000 and $10,000, the Rev. Jonathan S. Foggin, who coordinated the effort, told the College. Main funding came from the Rt. Rev. Damien Mead, Bishop of the United Kingdom; Father Foggin s family; and the Anglican Parishes Association. When asked whether the Missionary Society of St. Paul had given, Father Foggin indicated he had not received funds from them. An additional cost will be a series of videos describing the ACC, expected to run about $46,000. Some of those present suggested ways this figure could be reduced. Archbishop Haverland said he would instruct Provincial Bursar Joan DiMartino and those assisting with budget preparation for to add website maintenance and development as a line item on the budget. In other matters Archbishop Haverland reported that the Guard- ians of the Spiritualities of the Diocese of New Orleans have met and have requested a writ of election, which he has granted. The see has been vacant since the retirement earlier this year of Bishop Hutchens. The Rt. Rev. Terry Lowe will serve as vicar general for the time being. Bishop Hutchens remains Episcopal Visitor to the Diocese of the Holy Trinity, an arrangement, Archbishop Haverland said, that seems to be satisfactory to all parties there. The Archbishop also stated that the Diocese of the South has approved the transfer of Onslow County in North Carolina to the Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic States. If Mid-Atlantic States and the XX Provincial After several years in east Texas, the Congregation of the Good Samaritan has relocated back in the New Orleans area. Father John Benedict CGS and Brother John of the Cross, along with their dog, Angelus, and two cats, Blackie and Leo, are living in a house in the suburb of Westwego, which has become the order s monastery, while eight blocks away, in Marrero, Sister Anne lives with Hannah, her dog. Religious Orders Synod meeting in October 2013 agree, that paves the way for the election of Bishop Lerow as Bishop Ordinary of the Mid-Atlantic States. Bishop Lerow is now episcopal visitor to the diocese. On the ecumenical front, the College passed a motion stating that it is its policy within North America that ACC bishops will consult with bishops from the Anglican Church in America, the Anglican Province in America, the Diocese of the Holy Cross or the UECNAif a cleric from any of those bodies seeks admission to the ACC. It is expected that bishops from those jurisdictions will consult with the ACC bishop concerned should a cleric from the ACC seeks to join any of those bodies. On Trinity XVII, Oct. 7, 2012, at St. Paul s (UECNA), Prescott, Arizona, U.S.A., Brian McNeil was admitted to the Companions of St. Francis. The Most Rev. Peter D. Robinson, rector of St. Paul s and Archbishop of the UECNA, officiated. The Companions of St. Francis are associate members of the ACC s Franciscan Order of the Divine Compassion. Texas (U.S.A.) 11 12 THE TRINITARIAN NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2012 The Back Page FRATERNITY PLEDGES ATTEND MASS EN MASSE Twenty-two members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity joined the congregation of St. Stephen s, Athens, Georgia, U.S.A. on Sept. 16 for Holy Communion prior to their induction that afternoon into the fraternity s Lambda Chapter at the University of Georgia. Father Nicholas C. Athanaelos, rector of St. Stephen s, welcomed them and offered prayers on their behalf. Part of the oath taken by members of the fraternity requires that they promise to be faithful to God.The fraternity s chapter adviser, John Greaves, thought it important for the men to attend church services before pledging; since he is a Continuing Anglican from Virginia, St. Stephen s was the logical place for them to go.this may become an annual event for St. Stephen s, Father Athanaelos said.
