2 SOFTWARE INDUSTRY AT A GLANCE The San Diego region has 1,253 software and computer services firms and is home base to some of the largest software companies in the world. Innovative corporate giants like Lockheed Martin, Sempra Energy, SAIC, Illumina, Intel, and Intuit are just some of the 100+ companies that continue to expand and grow in the area of software analytics within San Diego. Software companies in San Diego succeed at attracting the best and brightest talent to the region. In addition to a vibrant innovative and entrepreneurial climate, outstanding quality of life, and robust business environment, compensation for software jobs in San Diego are higher than the national average and competitive among its peer regions. San Diego s strong base of human capital allows companies in the region to flourish. As the software industry continues to diversify, San Diego offers significant career opportunities for software engineers with a broad range of employers across dozens of industries. Formed in 1994, SDSIC is building a future for the region's high tech industry. SDSIC exists to foster and support the entrepreneurial spirit within the software and IT industry in San Diego, by providing an organized forum for the exchange of ideas, sharing of resources, and promotion of industry goals. The Council's objectives include fostering communications and networking opportunities among its members, creating and maintaining a link between the software industry and local educational institutions, and promoting a mutually beneficial dialog between San Diego's software industry and local government. San Diego is also home to some of the largest software companies in the world. Such companies include Websense Inc., a unified content securities company or web, and data, as well as ESET, which specializes in antivirus, antispam, and personal firewall solutions. Other software solution companies like Intuit, Active Network, and SmartDraw are staples in the San Diego region. Active Network is an online event marketing company that provides software and technology for organizations to help promote, plan and manage various activities globally in a low cost and effective manner. The company was taken public in mid SmartDraw is the first program to automate the creation of business graphics and was named Most Innovative General Business Software at the Software Innovation Awards in San Diego is also home to Intuit, the business software solutions provider of QuickBooks. And cutting-edge, ID Analytics has about 40 technologists, including high-end scientists, software engineers, and IT people. Page 1

5 ECONOMIC IMPACT The economic impact of the 27,360 employees hired by the San Diego s software companies generates more than $9.8 billion in economic activity, making a significant contribution to the regional economy. The indirect effects of vendor activity and employee spending also contribute to the total economic impact of this important industry. For example, San Diego s software total industry is responsible for more than 61,300 total jobs paying more than $3.5 billion in wages and adding more than $543.9 million in state and local taxes.
