Finarvedi is the holding company of the Arvedi Group, whose core business comprises steelmaking activities with volumes of about 2 million tpy of high quality products for the most demanding markets. The Arvedi Group, founded in 1963 by Giovanni Arvedi, employs more than 1,800 people and has a consolidated turnover of approximately 1.3 billion Euros. Four manufacturing plants, located in Northern Italy and operating in three specific sectors, form the steelmaking nucleus of the Arvedi Group. Acciaieria Arvedi SpA (Cremona) is the first example in Europe of a minimill for hot rolled carbon steel flat products. Arvedi Tubi Acciaio SpA (Cremona) and Ilta Inox SpA (Robecco d Oglio - Cremona) operate in the area of carbon steel and stainless steel tube production. Arinox SpA (Sestri Levante - Genoa), manufactures precision stainless steel strip. All the Arvedi Group companies, thanks to their production, organisational and logistical structures, have acquired a leading role in the industrial panorama both at an Italian and international level. In fact, a considerable share of production (on average over 40% with peaks of up to 80%) is destined for foreign markets. 3 Aerial view of the Cremona works technological steel Started up in 1992 Acciaieria Arvedi is Europe s first and the world s second example of a mini-mill for flat steel manufacture. In a highly modern industrial complex for technological, environmental and ergonomic solutions it produces high quality steel with particular properties technological steel through a new system, Arvedi ISP technology. Acciaieria Arvedi di Cremona, with its 700 employees, produces and sells about 1.3 mtpy of coils with a turnover of about 750 million. The production mix is directed towards thin and ultrathin gauges (down to 1 mm) with precision and surface characteristics such as to make it compete with and replace cold rolled material, both for quality steels - in particular for cold forming, constructions and re-rolling - and also high strength microalloyed and boron steels for heat treatment. A new generation of multi-phase steels, in particular demand from the car industry, has recently been introduced. Tests have also been conducted, with excellent results, both on the 300 and 400 stainless steel series and on magnetic steels with high and low silicon content.

ISP - Inline Strip Production: the most advanced of the compact modern technologies patented worldwide Since 1992 Acciaieria di Cremona has turned into reality the original ideas of its Chairman, Giovanni Arvedi, aimed at producing large quantities of thin gauge coils through a process which, in a single, extremely compact cycle, transformed the liquid steel into thin gauge quality steel strips that conventional plants and other thin slab technologies were unable to produce or produced at non-competitive costs. The process technology applied in Cremona, called In-line Strip Production, is protected by numerous patents in the most important industrialised countries covering the technology as a whole and the single plant components. In the ISP plant the transformation of the liquid steel is achieved in only 180 metres and in 15 minutes, directly casting and rolling in-line, exploiting the energy content of the liquid steel and its high plasticity at high temperatures. With this innovation, conceived and built for the first time in the world within the Arvedi Group, the product has excellent qualities, energy consumption is very low and large quantities of hot rolled ultrathin gauges can be produced in all steel grades, even high strength ones. The production cycle Acciaieria Arvedi s production cycle starts with raw material composed of ferrous scrap and pig iron which are loaded, together with melting substances consisting mainly of lime, into the electric arc furnace where melting occurs through the effect of the heat produced by the electrical power supplied through a threephase system of graphite electrodes and oxy-methane burners. The melting and casting operation is repeated about 30 times in the course of 24 hours and each heat corresponds to about 120 tonnes of liquid steel. Outline of Arvedi ISP plant Liquid steel 12.5-mm thin slab The liquid steel, produced upstream in the melt shop with the most precise analysis and temperature characteristics, is cast into a thin slab through an Arvedi-patented mould system so as to obtain the best quality characteristics and a high degree of reliability. The thin slab leaving the mould is reduced in thickness with a still-liquid core and directly rolled at high temperature so as to obtain a high precision intermediate bar with a homogeneous structure.

The production process The liquid steel produced in this way is cast into large containers, called ladles, and sent to stations or ladle furnaces where metallurgical operations are carried out consisting in the elimination of non-metallic impurities and the addition of small percentage fractions of other metals depending on the analysis required by the type of steel being produced. The ladle feeds the ISP plant with liquid steel; this first solidifies in the form of a continuous thin strip with a gauge of 55 mm called a slab. Carried out in sequence the pre-rolling and rolling phases reduce the thickness of the steel to values between 1 and 10 mm. This is how a cycle is achieved which transforms the liquid steel into a coil of finished product without interruption. During the transformation cycle the temperature of the steel never drops below 950 C, a much higher value than that reached by plants using conventional techniques which have to resort to subsequent slab heating. This is why the ISP plant achieves considerable energy saving, quantifiable in 22 equivalent tonnes of oil every 1000 tonnes of finished product and, what is perhaps even more important, determining a benefit in terms of the impact on the environment that is almost unique in the steelmaking sector. Coiled thin slab Steel coil down to ultrathin gauges The intermediate bar, heated as required in the induction furnace (the world s first example for thin slabs) and after accumulation in the Cremona Box is reduced to the finished gauge in the finishing mill which operates at constant heat and speed so as to obtain the best product characteristics. The strip is suitably cooled in order to give the steel the desired mechanical and structural characteristics and subsequently coiled on the downcoiler. The products cover the broadest range of steel grades and gauges.

The compactness and speed of the production cycle allow production to be extraordinarily flexible, so achieving a high level of service for the transformation industry.

highly flexible and reliable production to compete in the quality steels segment Acciaieria Arvedi s particular plant conception makes its special products, with a higher added value, the strong point of its sales mix as they can be produced flexibly and economically. Italian and foreign customers also recognize in Arvedi steel the best quality characteristics as regards weldability, formability, strength and constancy. These positive characteristics are consequently reflected in significant savings for all those industrial productions where steel is the raw material. Arvedi steel meets end-users primary requirements: - it is directly hot rolled in the broadest range of gauges - down to 1 mm - and widths mm - even for thin gauge high strength steels; - it guarantees higher strength values and consequently a saving in weight due to the use of lower gauges; - thanks to close dimensional tolerances, similar to those of cold rolled products, it increases processing yield; - it is welded and processed better because it is very clean, being obtained from a production and refining cycle that guarantees a very low inclusional level.

the advantages of pickled and hot dip galvanised steel The coil coming from the casting and rolling plant is further treated on pickling and hot dip galvanising plants to supply end users with a product the surface of which is ready to use and protected from corrosion. The continuous pickling line, equipped with a skinpass plant with a capacity of over 800,000 tpy, is able to process even ultrathin hot rolled gauges, supplying a product which for many applications is equivalent to cold re-rolled material. The galvanising line, one of the most recent in Europe, has a capacity of 400,000 tpy and a production range with gauges from 0.5 to 4.0 mm and finishing which includes tension levelling, skinpass and surface protection such as chemical passivation in accordance with standard 2002/95/EC (Rohs) and oiling. The hot dip galvanised steel produced by Acciaieria Arvedi combines the excellent characteristic of protection from corrosion with the guarantee of the quality of the underlying steel.

Gauge control The coils produced at Acciaieria Arvedi present particularly close and uniform gauge tolerances. This very important result is made possible by the integrated management of the pre-rolling and rolling phases which are governed by specific plant and software programmes, wholly developed by our technical staff. The particular conception of the process, in fact, with pre-rolling of the thin slab immediately after solidification in the continuous caster, allows precise gauge and profile control to be carried out on the slab during roughing and a semi-finished product to be prepared for finishing rolling with very precise and reliable geometrical characteristics. Subsequent finishing rolling is therefore done on a bar starting with optimal and constant gauge conditions, at constant temperature and speed and at stable and well controlled process conditions such as to ensure the results shown in the table Gauge tolerances.

Arvedi ultrathin steels Research and development programmes conducted in collaboration with: In the thin and ultrathin gauge range (less than 1.5 mm) the offer of Arvedi steels effectively covers a large part of those applications traditionally oriented towards the use of cold rolled strip. Thanks to ISP technology, where reduction of slab thickness is achieved with a liquid core, industrial production can be achieved of gauges that are unique in the world in terms of low carbon content steels for cold forming, structural steels and above all micro-alloy, high elastic limit steels. The geometrical characteristics of the ultrathin strips amply conform to the parameters set by European reference standards for cold rolled products (fig. 1). The excellent degree of cold formability, as shown by the limit curve (fig. 2) is substantially identical to that of a cold rolled product of the same steel grade and gauge (tests conducted by leading independent laboratories). Mechanical characteristics remain practically constant along the whole strip and throughout the cross-section. Homogeneousness of the mechanical characteristics, as shown by the tests conducted (fig. 3), is guaranteed by the fine-grain metallographic structure (in accordance with ASTM standards values are between 10 and 12) and by the high level of production process automation from the melt shop to casting and rolling. The reliability of the process also guarantees the repetition of the mechanical characteristics in the various production campaigns. fig.1 Constant gauge for the whole coil length mm. 20 Arvedi steels for the car industry Acciaieria Arvedi has gained a leading role both in Italy and Europe in the high strength steels sector (High Strength Low Alloy) and in the new-generation steels AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steel) such as Dual Phase. From 2006 onwards the range of high strength steels as a whole composes the core and broadly speaking the majority of products sold. High strength steels are aimed mainly at the car industry which is increasing committed to building safer, lighter and more ecological cars. This position of excellence has been achieved thanks to a precise strategy. Investments in the integrated casting and rolling line based on avant-garde technology ISP have led to the decision to pursue the aim of quality specifically addressed to the high strength steels segment; with their combination of excellent processing characteristics and being highly weldable and with lower costs due to a lower ferroalloy content, there is enormous scope for their application in the building of self-propelled vehicles and in particular cars. 26 Arvedi steels for industry The excellent quality of Arvedi steels can fully meet the demands of end users from numerous areas of industry. Thanks to collaboration between our experts and customers technicians products can be personalised on the basis of specific application requirements. For example, it is possible to roll strip to the most suitable gauges within prescribed tolerances so as to optimise production yield in terms of quantity; or mechanical characteristics can be modulated in conformance with reference specifications, so as to maximise the efficiency of pressing and moulding processes. Once a product has been developed, subsequent production campaigns are carried out in every way identical to the previous one: in this way products always present the same requirements and therefore allow considerable savings in terms of machine preparation and setting times. The ISP line s particular conception also allows particularly short delivery times and offers the possibility of reacting quickly to eventual nonstandard production.
