Purpose Provide clinical expertise, support and education to nursing staff within the Unit to ensure the provision of best practice and quality patient care. To provide expert knowledge of delirium dementia to plan a comprehensive care plan for the cognitively impaired. Staffing This position supervises registered and enrolled nurses, assistants/students-in-nursing and nursing students as members of the nursing team. Your key responsibilities Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with Queensland Health s core values, and those of the Townsville Hospital and Health Service (Townsville HHS) as outlined. Perform duties within the scope of nursing practice within the Nursing Skills Development Framework (attached). Provide leadership, support, direction and education to clients/patients, enrolled and registered nurses/students. Advanced clinical problem-solving skills and ability to plan and evaluate nursing interventions for patients / clients that have less predictable outcomes. Actively participate in a working environment supporting quality human resource management practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety and ethical behaviour. Meet the affective demands of the role in relation to self-awareness and management, flexibility to adapt to unexpected changes/events, emotional control in response to potential stressors e.g. management of dying or unpredictable patient. Participate in quality/research activities to improve standards of patient care. Ability to perform manual handling tasks safely and maintain PPE as per standard precautions and procedural requirements. Qualifications/Professional registration/other requirements Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a registered nurse and possession of a current practising certificate. Tertiary qualifications relevant to the position would be desirable. Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager prior to commencement of clinical duties. Health Care Workers in Queensland Health whose occupation poses a potential risk of exposure to blood or body fluids must be immunised against Hepatitis B according to the National Health and Medical Research Council Australian Immunisation Handbook and the Queensland Health Infection Control Guidelines. About the Hospital and Health Service The Townville Hospital and Health Service (HHS) is responsible for the HHS Area assigned to the HHS under the Hospital and Health Boards Regulation 2012 and shares its borders with Cairns and Hinterland HHS, North West HHS, Central West HHS and Mackay HHS. The HHS serves a population of over 240,000 which is forecast to grow by 27% to over 300,000 by 2026. The fastest population growth will be in the over 75s (110%) and 65-74 year olds (90%). Seven percent 7% of the Townsville HHS resident population is estimated to be of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (A&TSI) origin, compared to 3.5% for Queensland as a whole. Significant numbers of the population work in the farming, mining and defence sectors. The HHS also receives a substantial number of domestic and international visitors per annum. Townsville Hospital is the HHS s main referral hospital and also provides tertiary hospital services to the entire North Queensland region. It is also the major teaching hospital of the James Cook University School of Medicine and is closely affiliated with Central Queensland University and the University of Queensland. Organisational Unit The Medical Service Group provides tertiary and secondary services to the Townsville Hospital and Health Service and North Queensland. These services include Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Renal, Rheumatology, Rehabilitation, Neurology, Cancer Services and Chronic Disease. Pharmacy also falls under the Medical Service Group banner. The Medical Service Group Management Team comprises of a Service Group Director, Medical Director, two Nursing Directors, Business Service Manager, Workforce Advisor, Quality Coordinator and Business Support Officer. The Work Unit Medical Five is a secure 13 bed medical unit that provides a safe low stimulus environment for patients with a cognitive impairment that would put them at risk in an open unit.
