Addendum About the Wellness Program The primary vision of The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) Health4Life Workplace Wellness Program (WWP) is to develop and incrementally implement a large-scale successful WWP model within the SCHHS. The first step is to demonstrate this on a smaller scale in a feasibility study which can demonstrate positive measured outcomes and scalability in a focused area. Using a randomized controlled design we intend to compare the effectiveness of recognized WWP weight loss programs in a workplace environment for SCHHS staff. The funding of this project would have two important effects. Firstly, the pilot data from the results of this study would form the basis for an application for further funding from an NHMRC partnership grant to scale the model upwards. Secondly, the successful WWP team infrastructure thus formed would facilitate adopting the same methodology in other areas of the WWP such as the improvement of mental health, physical activity and stopping smoking. This specific post advertised is to predominantly develop and manage the overall project (includes physical activity, mental health, stopping smoking), work with the Health4Life team, and also to oversee the weight loss study. Project Aim This pilot study aims to assess within a workplace environment using a randomized controlled design, the relative effectiveness of three weight loss programs on SCHHS staff, in comparison to a minimal intervention group. Outcome measures of effectiveness over the study period include: >9% average body weight loss, less than 30% participant attrition rate, sustained weight loss at 12 months, with a significant increase in presenteeism and reduction in absenteeism. The first step is to demonstrate this on a smaller scale in a feasibility study which can demonstrate positive measured outcomes and scalability in a focused area. Using a randomized controlled design we intend to compare the effectiveness of recognized WWP weight loss programs in a workplace environment in SCHHS staff. Your role would be to develop and project manage strategies that contribute to the overall vision, and also manage the pilot study for weight reduction. A further key aim of the WWP is to provide additional support for employees at a time of significant organisational change and increased stressors with the upcoming opening of the SCUH. The WWP will provide information and resources to assist employees identify and manage factors that may adversely affect their health and wellbeing, the WWP is also intended to aid recruitment and retention which is particularly important with the projected growth of the SCHHS.
