Ivy Tech Community College Virtual Library East Central Indiana Region: Use the Library tab in Campus Connect Anderson: 765-643-7133 x2313 Marion: 765-651-3100 x3422 Muncie: 765-289-2291 x1450, 1451 IvyCat The Ivy Tech Community College Online Library Catalog IvyCat is the online catalog system that contains the holdings of all of the Ivy Tech libraries in the State of Indiana including print and electronic book titles and video titles. Access IvyCat from the Virtual Library homepage of your campus (from the library tab in Campus Connect). 1
There is a quick search box available on the BOOKS screen, but click the IvyCat link to open the fullfeatured catalog search screen. The initial IvyCat search screen will look like the picture below. Use this Keyword+ search screen to find records using keywords located anywhere in a record, or only in specific fields you choose. The form allows you to perform a simple search or build a more complex search. Type the search term(s) you want to find in a Search terms box. (Punctuation, case, and word order are ignored. Avoid beginning a search phrase with the words a, an, or the, and avoid words like a, and, the, of, is, in, for, etc. anywhere, unless searching as a phrase. ) Your search terms are automatically truncated on the right, so you don't need to use a question mark (?) for truncation. Default search criteria can be modified for your search: Narrow your search further by entering information in the following blank search boxes and selecting Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) as needed. Next to the box where you entered your search terms, select from the dropdown list whether you want to search for all of these terms (focuses your search), any of these terms (broadens your search), or the search terms as a phrase. Use the Search In dropdown list to select where IvyCat should look for your search terms (Title, Keyword Anywhere, Subject, Author, Series, ). Or you can conveniently choose to type your search terms in the box next to one of the default locations. Click the Limits button if you want to limit your keyword search based on other criteria, such as collections on a particular campus. Do this before entering search terms, as it will clear the form! (Or you can set a limit after getting search results see next page.) Click the Search button (or hit Enter) to begin your search. Use the Clear terms button to clear the search form (to start over). 2
NOTE: 1. IvyCat searches all of the Ivy Tech libraries (statewide) unless you set limits for your campus only. 2. This can be useful because books from other Ivy Tech libraries can be requested through Interlibrary Loan (see Instructions and forms under Help Guides on Virtual Library homepage), and usually arrive within 2-5 business days. 3. However, if you want to search only a particular campus, choose your location (on the limits screen as below), then click Set Limits. After you select a location (or other limit) and press Set Limits, you will be brought back to the search screen. Notice the bold purple (or other color) words: Search limits are in effect! and the pencil eraser icon you would use to remove limits. QuickSearch If you have a simple, uncomplicated search, the Quick Search screen may be just what you are looking for. A single box is offered for your search terms, and you may select from a list of Find Results in: options. Quick Search is particularly useful if you are searching for videos (or periodical holdings) just set a Quick Limit to Videorecording (or Serials in English). [At this time, the other Quick Limits do not work.] Patron Information If you click Patron on any IvyCat screen (as above), you can enter your barcode from your library card (on a screen like below), your last name, hit Login, and view the items you have checked out and any fines or fees owed (on a screen like that on the right). You can also renew any items due on this screen. 3
Search Result List Sample Screen You can use this button to set a limit AFTER doing your search. Search summary Total number of hits First screen is sorted this way with most recent publishing date first, but you can also sort by title, author, and pub. date. Gray areas below each title give you more information: If only one campus owns a title, that campus and collection is named, along with the call number of the title (its place on the shelf), and whether it is checked out or not (including due date if it is). You will sometimes see titles in the results list that have URL icons, but are NOT ebooks this means that some other online information is available for that title, such as table of contents or publisher description. If this area says Title has multiple holdings, you must click the title (green link) to see the book information and which library owns a copy. Some results listed will be online/electronic resources (ebooks) that you can access directly from IvyCat. The search results listing will indicate Online Book Collection when a title is an ebook. Open the record and there will be a Click here link to view the ebook. (Should you want to exclude ebooks from your search, or find ONLY ebooks, add click here to your search terms [Keyword anywhere],with NOT to exclude ebooks, or with AND to get only ebooks.) Note: The ebook databases (ebrary, NetLibrary, Books 24x7, etc.) search for terms in more fields than IvyCat, so it can be worth your while to search them directly (links may be found on the ebooks Collection menu of the Virtual Library). 4
Sample Book Record: Author and Title These are subjects you could also search by clicking on the link provided. Note the LOCATION, which lets you know which Ivy Tech library owns the book, as well as in which collection (Reference items do not circulate, but General Collection items do). Multiple campuses are listed in alphabetical order. Status indicates whether the book is available (not charged) or checked out. Use the Call Number to find the book in the library. SRG 8/08 5
