JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Registered Nurse Mental Health BAND: Band 5 DIRECTORATE INITIAL LOCATION: REPORTS TO: Mental Health & Learning Disability This recruitment is to cover bank shifts Trust Wide Nurse Bank Manager ACCOUNTABLE TO: JOB SUMMARY Postholders will work within Mental Health nursing service within the Southern Health & Social Care Trust, providing person centred nursing care and support to patients, their families and carers. The postholder will be expected to work flexibly across acute sectors and community as required and as appropriate. Participate as part of a team and using a person centred approach, assess, plan, implement and evaluate care delivered. KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES The following are Key Duties & Responsibilities of the postholder. PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Comply with all policies, procedures, clinical protocols, standards and guidelines based on legislation, evidence based nursing practice and NMC guidelines for conduct and professional practice. 2. Participate in the development of clinical and Social Care Governance in the context of his / her sphere of responsibility. 3. Provide quality care to patients / clients in partnership with family and carers. 4. Report to and liaises with the nurse in charge / team leader who is responsible for supervision of workload. 5. Ensure accurate record keeping as per Trust policy and NMC Guidelines. 6. Adhere to the Trust Area Child Protection and Vulnerable Adult Policies and Guidelines.

7. Co-operate and work effectively with other professionals in the multi-disciplinary team and community services to ensure continuity of care. 8. Adhere to the Medicines Management Code and NMC Standards for the safe keeping and administration of medication. 9. Adhere to procedures and protocols on moving and handling in line with current legislation. 10. Contribute to the accuracy of statistical returns. 11. Be cost effective in the use of resources 12. Co-operate fully with the implementation of the Trusts Health & Safety arrangements, reporting accidents/incidents to the nurse in charge / team leader, and initiating a full investigation in a timely manner, whilst taking responsibility to complete appropriate documentation. 13. Monitor and evaluates standards of care and reports to nurse in charge / team leader. 14. Accept responsibility for own professional development. 15. Maintain an awareness of clinical and professional developments in nursing and participate in nursing research to enhance patient care. 16. Actively participate in the Trust KSF and Clinical Supervision. 17. Attend staff meetings, training sessions and courses as required. 18. Flexibility in working will be required to meet the needs of this post. CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES 21. Work as a member of the multidisciplinary team ensuring effective communication with other team members, manager / team leader to promote patient centred care. 22. Assess the health and nursing care needs of patients / clients within the individual care environment. To develop, implement and evaluate nursing care plans in partnership with the patient / client, family and carers, whilst working in close co-operation with other disciplines. 23. Promote self care and independence, where appropriate and prepare the patient / client for independent living whenever possible. 24. Assist in the training of qualified staff, nursing auxiliaries, health care assistants, and student nurses, ensuring compliance to the NMC standards to support learning and assessment in practice. 25. Provide support, guidance and supervision to junior staff as required.

26. Participate in induction and teaching programmes to students and members of staff to include supervision, preceptorship and training and those undertaking NVQ qualification. 27. Administer medications, treatments and interventions as prescribed and to monitor their effects. 28. Assess and prescribe nursing equipment within existing resources and advise patients / clients / carers on the use of same. Document any areas of unmet need to inform areas of future service delivery. 29. Maintain and develop professional expertise and knowledge in his / her specific field of nursing. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS The post holder will be required to: 30. Employees are required to be conversant with the Trusts policy and procedures on records management and to seek advice if in doubt. 34. Take responsibility for his/her own ongoing learning and development, including full participation in KSF Development Reviews/appraisals, in order to maximise his/her potential and continue to meet the demands of the post. 35. Represent the Trust s commitment to providing the highest possible standard of service to patients/clients and members of the public, by treating all those with whom he/she comes into contact in the course of work, in a pleasant, courteous and respectful manner. 36. Understand that this post may evolve over time, and that this Job Description will therefore be subject to review in the light of changing circumstances. Other duties of a similar nature and appropriate to the band may be assigned from time to time.

Be willing to work flexibly to meet the needs of a 24/7 service, which may include evening, night time and weekend work with an expectation to rotate between different areas as required This Job Description will be subject to review in the light of changing circumstances and is not intended to be rigid and inflexible but should be regarded as providing guidelines within which the individual works. Other duties of a similar nature and appropriate to the band may be assigned from time to time. It is a standard condition that all Trust staff may be required to serve at any location within the Trust's area, as needs of the service demand.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA these are criteria all applicants MUST be able to demonstrate either at shortlisting or at interview. Applicants should therefore make it clear on their application form whether or not they meet these criteria. Failure to do so may result in you not being shortlisted. The stage in the process when the criteria will be measured is stated below; The following are essential criteria which will initially be measured at Shortlisting Stage although may also be further explored during the interview stage; QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE 1. Currently a Registered Nurse Level 1 Mental Health - on the Live NMC Register 1. Applications will also be accepted from those who are due to register in spring 2010. ¹You must state your part number and field of practice on your application form as per NMC Register. Failure to do so may result in your application not being shortlisted for the next stage of the selection process. 2. Hold a full current driving license valid for use in the UK and have, on appointment, access to a car² ²this criterion will be waived in the case of applicants who are prevented from driving due to a disability, providing the applicant can organise suitable alternative arrangements in order to meet the requirements of the post in full.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS The following are essential criteria which will be measured during the interview stage. 1. Have knowledge of the practical and emotional support needs of both patient / clients & carers. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of current professional issues and relevant research. 5. Effective communication to meet the needs of the post in full. 6. Excellent organisational skills. 7. Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team setting. 8. Ability to use initiative to deal with management of clinical issues.
