1 Stroom Wood - SOLD, Nottinghamshire - 6¼ acres, 55,000 Stroom Wood is set amid a larger forested area known as Cotgrave Forest and is surrounded by woodland on three sides. To the north, there are views across the adjoining farm fields in the direction of Clipston-on-the Wolds. There are excellent tracks leading from Laming Gap Lane to the ride stop entrance: a new owner will be able to take a car though this entrance and park inside the boundary. Stroom Wood is predominantly mature pine but if you take the weaving path that leads from the parking area, you will see some very good oak and sycamore dotted in amongst the sweet-scented pine. The resulting high canopy is busy with birdlife such as goldcrests. Other than the small birds in the tree tops, woodpeckers, squirrel and deer are all active in Stroom Wood. Cover is created at a lower level by the occasional holly and yew tree as well as the blackberry bushes which are home to quite a number of wrens, pheasants and the occasional woodcock. Towards the north-western corner, the path reaches an open clearing at the edge of the pine where a bench is located. This is an ideal spot to rest for a while, located as it is on a gentle slope overlooking a strip of younger deciduous trees. In contrast to the main body of the wood, the belt along this northern boundary includes oak, cherry, blackthorn and hawthorn. Stroom Wood would be an excellent place for camping or to carry out conservation based activities to encourage species diversity. The original Roman Fosse Way runs just a mile east of here, turning slightly to the right with an uncharacteristic deviation from its straight route due to the course of the River Trent to the north. The local parish of Cotgrave was mentioned in the Domesday Book where it appears as Godegrave. The derivation of the name is from Cotta (a personal name) and gracfe, (a grove or thicket) and the parish name appears as Cotegrowa as early as But there must have been an active settlement here long before that as an Anglo Saxon burial ground is located to the north of the village. Continue straight on through Stanton-on-the-Wolds. Immediately after leaving Stanton-on-the-Wolds turn right into Laming Gap Lane. From the West:- Travelling along the M52 turn on to the A606 signed to Melton. Go under the railway and through Tollerton. Go straight on at the traffic lights. Pass two left turns to Normanton. Immediately before Stanton-on-the Wolds village sign turn left onto Laming Gap Lane. Laming Gap Lane:- Pass Wynnstay Cottage on the left and proceed to a sharp right hand bend. Park in the lay-by at this point. Cotgrave Forest is 100 metres north east along Wolds Lane. Walk round the green entrance barrier and continue along the track (Wolds Lane), follow the track round a sharp right hand bend and then turn immediately left downhill along the stone track, cross the bridge over the stream at the bottom of the hill. Approximately 300 metres after crossing the stream turn right through the ride stop and Stroom Wood is 300 metres along the track and to the left. Boundaries: Are indicated by mauve markings on trees around the entire boundary. The east, south and west boundaries are formed by woodland tracks and the northern boundary is with farm land.
