What kind of performative potential does such an environment hold? MAGNA CARTA SHELF LIFE investigates the exhibition format as a stage with inherited contexts from previous exhibitions and institutional histories. In the three part series, 3 ½ becomes a layered mise-en-scène, shared at once by the artistic, the curatorial, and the architectural, each as distinctly motivated protagonists. Within the finitude of the exhibition process, each party comes to an accord of roles and specific freedoms, which are not without hegemonic undertones. For each edition, artists present site-specific works, critically engaging with the constraints of objects and display materials from KW s previous exhibitions, culled from its backstage of closets and storage rooms, not unlike 3 ½. Solo exhibitions by Alex Turgeon (born 1988 in Halifax, CA), Eva Vuillemin (born 1987 in Zurich, CH), and Felix Oehmann (born 1985 in Heidelberg, DE) address the performative limitations of the exhibition format. Whether through language and identity, confronting the self and other, or material, scale and fragility, each artist draws out theatrical elements in their practice, as the room becomes a selfcontained space for exercising against institutional constraints. Here, site and surrounding institution stand as sculptural narrative, as the politics of production and modes for display surface a dramatic tension that exists at the intersection of limitation and artistic intent. The first edition, Alex Turgeon s EVEN COWBOYS GET THE BLUES, considers the individual against the allegories of the everyday by focusing on the melancholic characteristics within the narrative of the cowboy. Operating as an individual separated from society, either by intention or condition, the archetype of the cowboy is described as a free and independent figure who roams the earth with reckless and existential abandon. The exhibition looks to challenge the desire to maintain an individual mythology and singularity in relation to contemporary social networks. EVEN COWBOYS GET THE BLUES poeticizes relationships between the romantic fictions and realities of the modern day rhinestone cowboy. The exhibition series is conceived by the independent curator and writer Kate Brown. She was born 1988 in St. John's, CA, and lives and works in Berlin. Brown is co-director of Ashley Berlin, an exhibition space which fosters dialogs between Canadian and local and international artists, supported by the Canadian Embassy to Berlin.
