Learners take part in activities that will boost their CVs or professional portfolios such as work placements and attending networking events. You can choose how long you want to study for - The college offers intermediate HE awards such as foundation degrees and HNCs. These courses are perfect for those who aren t sure whether they want to commit to full three or four year degree programmes. Once you have completed your foundation degree or HNC you can opt to top up your qualification (e.g. to a full honours degree) or walk away with a recognised and respected intermediate HE qualification. Flexible modes of study - Courses can be studied in full or part-time modes to fit around your lifestyle and commitments. The college offers qualifications that are awarded by Edexcel, the University of Salford and the University of Bolton. Learners on courses awarded by our partner universities are able to access facilities and services at both the college centres and also at our partner university campuses. This gives you the opportunity to combine the benefits of studying in a college environment such as small class sizes, regular access to your tutors and affordable tuition fees, with the academic and social benefits of accessing the facilities at a large university. University of Salford The college and the university have recently extended their existing partnership to collaborate on the development of a suite of innovative creative foundation degrees. The university is a close neighbour of the college, making accessing university services and facilities particularly convenient for learners studying on our University of Salford foundation degrees. The university is located in two main areas of the city: at Salford Crescent, a short distance from Manchester city centre, and at MediaCityUK. Both university campuses are easily accessible from all college centres by public transport. There are well established progression routes for learners who wish to continue their studies at the Bolton main campus. It is ideal preparation for entry on to an art and design based degree course. his intensive one The course has three stages: Stage 1: Exploratory Through a structured programme of drawing and visual studies, you identify your skills, strengths and interests. You develop practical abilities in 2D and 3D, helping you to make an informed choice of specialist study. Stage 2: Pathway You choose to study one broad art and design discipline, such as graphic design, textiles, fine art, animation, photography or 3D design. Stage 3: Confirmatory You bring together your skills, knowledge and understanding in art, design and communication to carry out a major project, resulting in an exhibition. Disciplines covered include: Graphic Design Textiles Fine Art Animation Photography 3D Design Pendleton Sixth Form Centre Full-time (1 year) You will be assessed on a continuous basis throughout the course. Methods employed will include assessment of your response to set briefs which will be used to help you develop your portfolio and assessment of exhibition and curation. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You should hold a Level 3 qualification in an Art & Design subject (and at least 1 AS Level at grade D or above or a Level 3 Diploma Pass). You should have a body of work (portfolio) which you can bring to interview. Mature applicants (over the age of 21) will be considered on an individual basis. 4 Graphic Design 6 7 Graphic Design This course provides an opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in the graphic design industry. Games Design The programme offers the opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in games design and development. COMPUTING & GAMES Learners will be provided with training in the essential skills of visual communication and will have the opportunity to explore a range of forms of visual communication including illustration, print, typography, photography and computer aided graphic design. Through this integrated approach, learners will be provided with a foundation in the skills required for a range of careers in graphic design and related fields. The course is assessed largely through practical work produced in response to time specific and industry-related briefs. Employer and client engagement will be a key feature of the course. At the end of the course learners will set up their own professional exhibition. Practical work is supported with study of art and design history and contemporary professional practice and a range of external visits. Modules include: Visual Communication Typography Personal Professional Development Final Major Project Exhibition Contextual Studies qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 200 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma MMP Profile) and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. Foundation degrees are a good stepping stone for learners who wish to pursue BA (Hons) Degree qualifications. On completion of the foundation degree students can apply for direct entry into Year 3 (or if studied part-time, Level 6) of a computing and games design (or related) degree or a BA top up programme. 5 COMPUTING & GAMES 8 9 Computing and Systems Development (HNC) The HNC covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the ICT sector. Creative Music The foundation degree is aimed at advanced Learners who strive to be multi-skilled future professionals or entrepreneurs within the music industry. MUSIC & MEDIA The qualification will focus on the areas of web development and programming, providing the skills needed to design and create solutions for existing and developing businesses either through the use of web authoring and scripting software or the latest programming languages. Skills in project planning and management will be developed to complement the practical and technical skills developed throughout the course. Learners will be supported to develop realistic and achievable career plans to help them reach their goals within the industry. Work based learning, whether as a freelancer or as an employee within the sector, will form a key aspect of the programme. This will be valuable in helping learners to develop their CVs and portfolios and good industry contacts as well as skills and knowledge. Based at MediaCityUK, you will study at ; a creative hub for music and media students containing professional recording, editing and rehearsal facilities. Also based within the centre is our Roland Music Academy, which will provide you with access to some of the leading products and artists within the music industry. 6 MUSIC & MEDIA 10 Media Production Media Make-up for fashion 11 MUSIC & MEDIA This course provides an opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills required to pursue a career in the creative media industries. This new foundation degree is designed to help you access exciting employment opportunities in Make-up artistry. The two year course is awarded by University of Salford and taught by a team with extensive experience in the sector. The qualification will give learners a firm grounding in identifying employment opportunities in creative media, research for media production, industry regulation and key techniques in film/tv and radio production. The programme will help to develop a wide range of industry relevant skills which will help to ensure that learners are multi-skilled practitioners. Work-based placements will be a key aspect of the programme and learners will be supported to find good quality placements within the industry as part of the course, developing their CVs and industry contacts at all possible opportunities. The course has three main interlinked strands: Advanced technical skill in Media Make-up practices, hair and postiche at Level 4 and 5. Contextual aspects (business, ethical, social, historical and environmental) of Media Make-up to develop intellectual skills such as critical thinking but also to directly inform their practice. Through work based learning, portfolio building, personal and professional practice and industry showcases you will build employability and transferable skills as well as industry awareness and give you the opportunity to demonstrate technical aptitude and creativity. The course lasts for two years. You will be able to pursue work opportunities on completion or can apply to join the third year/or a BA top-up of a related Media Make-up degree. 7 MUSIC & MEDIA 12 Musical theatre Health and Social Care (HNC) 13 CARE & EARLY YEARS The Foundation Degree in Musical Theatre is aimed at those who wish to pursue career opportunities in Musical Theatre and related areas of the Arts. You will develop performance techniques in contemporary theatre, voice, jazz, tap and ballet, and acting through song. The HNC in Health and Social Care gives a firm grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the health and care sector. Taught sessions will include dance, physical theatre, vocal (acting and singing) workshops and one to one sessions. There will be an emphasis on key performance skills to help prepare you for the audition process, such as developing your singing repertoire. You will take part in a number of performances each year as part of the college Performance Season. This will culminate in development of a studentled touring company in year 2 of the programme and taking part in an end of year industry showcase. The history of Musical Theatre and the context of contemporary Musical Theatre will be explored in years 1 and 2. These modules will be linked to practical work, such as taking part in productions from a set era. The foundation degree is a two year full-time programme. Learners who successfully complete the programme will be able to apply to top up the qualification to a full BA Honours (one final year of study). Modules include: British Musical Theatre Performance Singing Repertory Dance (Jazz, Ballet, Tap) Contemporary Theatre (Acting) History of Musical Theatre American Musical Theatre Performance Touring Company Contemporary Musical Theatre Analysis Acting Through Song Industry Showcase You will be assessed largely through performance and the development of related portfolios. This HNC in Health and Social Care is suitable for those seeking to enhance their employment prospects in the sector or as a stepping stone to further higher level study. 8 CARE & EARLY YEARS 14 Early Years and Childhood Studies The Foundation Degree in Early Years and Childhood studies is aimed at those wishing to progress their careers in childcare, teaching and related areas. learners who successfully complete the foundation degree can move on to a BSc (Hons) top up programme offered at the University of Bolton s main campus. PGDE/PDE The Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) are teacher training courses for the Learning and Skills Sector which are run by Salford City College in partnership with the University of Bolton. These qualifications are the first step towards claiming QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) Status. 15 TEACHER EDUCATION Walkden Sixth Form Centre The course comprises of twelve modules that include the study of children s development and learning, aspects related to the roles and responsibilities of the childcare worker and becoming a reflective practitioner. Study is closely linked to work practice and therefore you need to be working in a childcare setting. Course content: You will study the following modules: Study Skills The Developing Child ICT to Support Children s Learning Facilitating Children s Learning Social Policy in Early Years Inclusive Practice Safeguarding Children Developing Self-Reflectice Practice Managing Sessions Research Perspectives in Early Years Independent Study methods will include producing essays, critical reports, group and individual presentations. Learners will also be observed in work-based settings and will be required to produce reflections on their work based practice. qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 240 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma Merit Profile) and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. Mature applicants who do not hold a Level 3 qualification, but have relevant experience in the childcare sector, will be considered on an individual basis. All applicants must be employed/secure employment relevant to the sector (paid or voluntary) for a minimum of two days a week. Applicants should apply directly to Salford City College by completing the University of Bolton part-time application form. Please call for an application form. The course comprises of six modules. In addition, there is a requirement to undertake a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice. Current modules include: Preparing to Teach Teaching and Learning in Practice Teaching and Learning Project Planning for Curriculum Quality and Professionalism Personal and Professional Development occurs on a continuous basis throughout the course. Methods employed include essay, presentation, portfolio development and observation of teaching. Applicants should hold at least a Level 3 qualification (or possibly a degree depending on the subject) in their subject area. Candidates wishing to teach vocational subjects will be required to have relevant work experience in the areas in which they are applying to teach. 9 TEACHER EDUCATION 16 Buile Hill Visual Arts college and Salford City College School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) You will undertake all of your training in a school environment. This means that you will have the best opportunity to put educational theory in to practice in the classroom. School places are available on the following routes from September 2014: Maths (11-16) Physics (11-16) Chemistry (11-16) English (11-16) Modern Foreign Languages (11-16) Business Studies (14-19) You will train on a full time basis for one academic year. On successful completion of the programme you will achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will be placed in secondary schools within Greater Manchester over the course of the year and will be supported by your Mentor (a member of teaching staff from the school) to teach pupils. Your Mentor will work with you to offer training opportunities suited to your needs. For example, if you are completely new to teaching, offering team teaching and opportunities to observe outstanding lessons to build your skills. As well as your main placements you will also engage in enhancement placements. For example, observing teaching practice in a Primary setting. You will also attend taught sessions which will develop your knowledge of pedagogy, professional issues and also enhance your subject knowledge. Your ability to meet the Teaching Standards will be assessed in the following ways: Observation of your teaching practice. Development of a reflective log mapping your progress. Written and practical assignment work. All applicants will be expected to: Hold a first degree from a UK Higher Education Institution (or equivalent institution) in a relevant subject. Entrants should hold a lower second or above. Have achieved a GCSE grade C in Maths and English (or a recognised equivalent set out in the Secretary of States ITT Criteria). Demonstrate the potential to meet the Teaching Standards through successful and active engagement with the interview process. Have an enhanced DBS in place in time for the commencement of the training (arranged by the SCITT). UCAS - Initial Teacher Training application route. (Foundation Degrees) This suite of foundation degrees in Business are designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of core business practices central to the operation of all businesses, as well as specialist knowledge and understanding related to your chosen specialist area. The foundation degrees aim to build awareness of business practices linked to your chosen specialism. You will study core aspects of business related to your chosen pathway as well as distinct specialist modules (see content below). You will apply your knowledge and understanding to practical projects and the work environment as part of the work based placement module. The course can be studied in a full or part time mode. Learners can apply to join the final year of related degree programme on completion of the foundation degree if they would like to further their studies. Grade C or above at GCSE (or Level 2 equivalent) in both Maths and English are required. Equivalent professional or academic qualifications (such as NVQ 3 in Hospitality or a related sector) will also be considered please contact Admissions for further information. Applications from those holding non-tariff point qualifications in relevant subject areas (such as work based NVQ3s) are welcome. (BSC Programmes) This suite of Foundation degrees in Business are designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of core business practices central to the operation of all businesses, as well as specialist knowledge and understanding related to your chosen specialist area. The courses aim to build awareness of business practices linked to your chosen specialism. You will study core aspects of business related to your chosen pathway as well as distinct specialist modules (see content below). You will apply your knowledge and understanding to practical projects and through extended research in your final year of study. The first two years of the programme are delivered at Salford City College s centre. The final year is delivered at the Peel Park campus of the University of Salford. 11 CONSTRUCTION 20 Construction and the BuilT Environment (Higher Apprenticeship) This Higher Apprenticeship is designed to develop managers in the construction sector and is an ideal way to balance work with continuous professional development for those who are already working in the sector. You will study for a HND in Construction and the Built Environment, alongside studying for an NVQ level 5 Diploma in Construction Management. You will explore a range of disciplines essential to those pursuing management posts in Construction or wishing to undertake further study.
