2 St. Xaviers College was founded on 16th January 1860 by the Jesuits (the Society of Jesus) under the leadership of Fr Depelchin. The Jesuits are a Christian religious group started by Saint Ignatius of Loyola in The college campus is located at 10 Park Street where the San Souci theater was previously located, the theater was burnt in an accident and the Jesuits was handed the premises to start the college by the then bishop of Calcutta, Mgr Olliffe. In 1862, two years after its inception, the college was affiliated to the Calcutta University. The present 30 Park St where the College is situated is an amalgamation of numbers 10 and 11 of Park St. The present imposing 5 storied building was built in an interval of 6 years, from 1934 to 1940 at a cost of Rs 9 lakhs, which was collected partly from the public of Calcutta, assistance from Belgium, and the huge rental received from the American army that occupied the building during the second war. SXC is raised to PG teaching cente in 2005r, by Calcutta University granting affiliation for teaching M.Sc. Comp. Sc., extension wing for MCV. St. Xavier's College was affiliated to Calcutta University but has gained autonomy since July 2006 becoming the first autonomous college of West Bengal, India. Post-graduate courses introduced at the college are an M.Sc in Computer Science, M.Sc in Physics with a specialization in Astrophysics, M.Com degree and a five-year integrated programme in Biotechnology. The college is also planning to introduce a certificate programme in Real Estate Management and a course in 'Foreign Trade Management Among the many notable Alumni of St. Xaviers College, Kolkata, person who stands out is most is Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, Acharya Bose did his graduation from this College during Acharya J. C. Bose, physicist and science fiction writer, who pioneered the investigation of radio and microwave optics, made extremely significant contributions to plant science, and laid the foundations of experimental science in the Indian subcontinent. Acharya J. C. Bose is considered the father of radio science, and is also considered the father of Bangla science fiction. He was the first Indian to get a US patent, in 1904, although Bose was himself critical of patents

3 Bose Institute was founded by Acharya Jagadiah Chandra Bose in 1917, with the purpose of investigating fully "the many and ever opening problems of the nascent science which includes both life and non-life Acharya Bose s early career included many m a r v e l o u s l y i n v e n ti v e a n d p i o n e e r i n g experiments on electromagnetism which, in J. J. Thomson s words, marked "the dawn of the revival in India, of interest in researches in the Physical Sciences", and on the commonality of the response of plants and inorganic materials to electric and mechanical stimuli. The institute has evolved over the years into a multidisciplinary research organization with stress on fundamental research in its pursuit of advancement of knowledge in Science and technology and at the same time developing highly competent and able scientific manpower for the country. The institute has on its staff highly qualified and experienced scientists working in the field of Biological, biochemical, Chemical and Physical sciences placed in long established departments of Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics, and the research sections on plant Molecular & Cellular Genetics, Animal Physiology, Immunotechnology and Environmental science. The wide ranging and comprehensive base of available scientific infrastructure also comprises of the Acharya J. C. Bose High Altitude Research Centre at Darjeeling and experimental field stations at Falta and Madhyamgram in West Bengal catering to the need and requirements of scientists in their researches. The Centre for Astroparticle Physics and Space Science, Bose Institute, Salt Lake, is devoted to the theoretical, experimental and observational r e s e a r c h i n c o s m o l o g y, a s t r o p h y s i c s, atmospheric chemistry, climate study and chemical weather. A high Altitude National facility has also been established, with the base station for observations at Bose Institute, Darjeeling and another proposed experimental site at Sandakphu. Substantial efforts are devoted to disseminating science to the populace, especially school and college students, of the hill region, with the aim of encouraging them to pursue careers in scientific and technological fields.

4 ACADEMIC STATUS The Course is accredited by and developed under the auspices of the University of Calcutta who would confer the M.Sc. degree to students taking up this course. COURSE CHRONICLE On September 17, 2007 a twin planet was put into the orbit of the Department of Physics in St. Xavier s College. The idea of adding a new level to the existing system was prompted by autonomy and brought into life when Father Matthew, Principal, St. Xaviers College and Prof. Sibaji Raha, Director, Bose Institute, together lit the lamp to inaugurate the M.Sc. Physics course with special emphasis on Astrophysics and Space Science.

5 COURSE OBJECTIVES M. Sc Physics is a two year, four semester PG course in Physics with s p e c i a l i z a t i o n i n Astrophysics or Space Sciences. To develop a general competence in core Physics and other allied sciences. This is a pre-requisite for contributing flexibly in today s cross- disciplinary research arenas. To cultivate specific strengths in the flourishing and future oriented areas of Astro-particle Physics and Space Sciences respectively. To nurture the creative imagination of young minds and to reinforce the spirit of rational enquiry in a co-operative ambience.

6 COURSE HIGHLIGHTS Academics from several leading research institutes in Kolkata and around the country teach the course Teaching assistants help students with their assignments in interactive tutorial sessions. Students are exposed to extensive computation courses along with handson sessions. Students learn to design and fabricate experiments with computer assisted modern interfacing equipment. Students participate in seminars, journal clubs and discussion sessions on different areas of research in Physics (Saturday Seminar). St. Xavier's college and Bose Institute periodically organize students to learn and interact with scientists & researchers from all around the country on different specialized aspects of Astroparticle Physics and Space Science.

7 ADMISSION CRITERIA & SYSTEM Eligibility to apply : Physics honours graduates with a minimum of 55% in B.Sc (physics honours) NOTE: Admission on the basis of a MCQ & interview Admissions will be held during the month of July-August (Exact dates will be announced every year). Forms will be made available on college website, COURSE STRUCTURE Two years of course work consists of four semesters. Each semester is extended over 14 months or three and a half months. 8 EVALUATION SYSTEM Students are evaluated on the basis of 1.Day by day performance in the theory lectures (classroom quizzes, tutorials and assignments), in the General and Computer laboratories. 2.Semester Examinations 3.Projects Distribution of Marks: Internal Assessment: 20% (in all areas), Semester exams and Projects: 80% Promotion Criteria: The student must secure at least 75% attendance and get a minimum of 40% marks in each continuous assessment session in order to sit for a semester examination. Pass Marks is 40% and the student must pass in all theory papers and practical examinations in each semester. Paper Structure: The total marks (1000) is broken up into 13 theory half papers, 3 Practical half papers, 2 Computation half papers 1 project full paper. One half paper carries 50 marks ( (Internal assessment)) and a full paper carries 100 marks ( (Internal Assessment)).
