3 Fino, Page 3 INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE Smith and Nephew Wound Management, La Jolla, CA October 2002 to August 2004 Senior Product Development Engineer Demonstrated increasing management responsibility in the development of projects supporting manufacturing. Significantly improved product yields with an exhaustive multivariable analysis of bioprocess metrics, including cell growth data, quality control data, and the influences of different operators, environmental conditions, raw materials, and equipment. Designed and implemented a new aseptic process for efficient, sterile bulk media formulation and delivery. Authored and executed studies to increase the shelf life of a critical component preventing a multimillion dollar inventory scrap. Proposed and managed a broad development program to bring in house the manufacture of a key raw biomaterial, thereby eliminating a sole source position. Authored company policies on process equipment specification and practical risk analysis. The latter was key in aligning practices with recently formalized regulatory expectations for risk based decision making. Advanced Tissue Sciences, Inc., La Jolla, CA May 2001 to October 2002 Engineering Group Lead Applied expertise in biological process design, development, analysis, optimization, and implementation. Managed a critical capital project for the automation of aseptic media exchanges for in process roller bottles. Authored initial specification, created conceptual drawings, analyzed bids and recommended final vendor, managed project change, conducted acceptance testing and commissioning, drafted PFDs and P&IDs, assessed facility impact and layouts, authored procedural and maintenance documentation, trained operators and mechanics, and provided support after implementation. Greater than $1.5 million in annual savings over the existing manual process. Specified a total of over ½ million dollars in capital manufacturing equipment. Managed the commissioning and validation for implementation in two pilot production facilities. Successful and timely completion enabled a $2 million milestone payment from partner. Served as the Technical delegate for two Quality System boards: Change Control and Supplier Review. Assessed impact of documentation, process, raw material changes, and supplier selection. Group leader responsible for the management and development of two direct report engineers. March 1998 to May 2001 Bioprocess Engineer I/II Designed and fabricated complex bioreactor systems to isolate the effects of various mechanical forces on cartilage tissue culture. Designed the bioreactor process architecture for a Phase 1 SBIR award from National Science Foundation. Designed and implemented an extensive remote alarm system for cell culture manufacturing equipment that tracked calibration tolerance and failure. The system brought the company into regulatory compliance and saved $50,000 over a less useful turnkey system. Developed a semi automated digital image acquisition and analysis program for the histomorphometric analysis of tissue engineered knee cartilage. The program would analyze and score histological sections of safranin O stained cartilage specimen, providing an objective basis for experimental comparison. Co authored IDE and PMA submissions to the FDA related to product and component biocompatibility. Lead inventor for patent on a dynamic cell culture system designed to study the effects of mechanical forces on engineered blood vessels. Lead author for company policy on product and process biocompatibility qualifications. Performed mechanical testing and analysis on polymeric biomaterials.

4 Fino, Page 4 October 1996 to March 1998 Research Assistant Designed and qualified a biomechanical testing system for native and engineered blood vessels that established objective evidence of fitness for use as a blood carrying conduit in critical implant applications; Co authored a book chapter and three abstracts as part of this work.
