Please talk with our visitors and make them feel welcome! Short Course, Session 5: OPTICS AND TELESCOPES * * by Tom Richardson Tom will cover the principles of operation of the basic types of telescopes (refractors, reflectors, and catadioptrics), and the relative merits of each; suitable eyepieces and magnifications for observing different types of objects. Saturday, July 11: 8:45 p.m. at Burton s Sugar Farm. Dark-Sky Observing. Saturday, July 18: 8:45 p.m. at Burton s Sugar Farm. Dark-Sky Observing. A map with directions will be provided by on the day of each observing session. Also, don t forget to bring a printout of your M.A.S. Observing List for July. *************************************************************************** FROM ONE NEWBIE TO ANOTHER (Part IV) June was/has been (depending on when you read this) an eventful and interesting month. We actually had multiple observing sessions that weren't clouded out! Don't worry, I knocked on wood before I wrote this! In addition to the good fellowship at the picnic and subsequent observing session (the clouds went away after the Board meeting which may speak volumes to the amount of hot air inherent in board meetings), the M.A.S. has gained Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park as an observing partner and it has multiple dark-sky sites with nearly 360 degree horizons. To say that Mark Matthews and I were treated like kings would represent a significant understatement and we had fun while observing, teaching and feeding the mosquitoes. To those of us that are city dwellers and suburbanites, it is really amazing how much light pollution we are forced to endure. Do a Google/Bing search for EYES ON THE SKY. In addition to some great information on astronomy in general, there is some good advice about dark skies and how we can all help in this worthy endeavor. Are you signed up for the SKY AND TELESCOPE digital weekly newsletter? How about the Orion Telescopes newsletter? Both have quite good and rather prolific information, including weekly targets for us backyard observers. Until the meeting, clear skies, Tom Richardson

3 JULY 2015 Meteor Write Page 3 SOME THOUGHTS ON THE PICNIC By most standards, the M.A.S. Annual Picnic held at Burton s Sugar Farm on June 20th was a success. About two dozen people attended, enjoyed some good food and fellowship, and were able to observe a number of beautiful celestial objects after dark. However, at least 17 people who made reservations didn't show up.. Some told others they weren't coming, but didn t tell me. Others ed me at 5:30, after I was already there. Some were worried about rain, although the event was clearly billed as rain or shine, and I thought it had been made clear that we had access to the cabin. As a result, a lot of food was left over. We offered the picnic dinner to our members and visitors at no charge, but the food certainly wasn t free at the grocery store! On the other side of the coin, quite a few people showed up without reservations, and were invariably the first in line to eat. What part of RSVP did they not understand? Despite warnings to the contrary, we graciously served everyone who came. As a result of the large disconnect between reservations and attendees, we will be considering a totally different format for any future M.A.S. picnics. First of all, it might be a good idea to go back to having the picnic at a park in Memphis or a suburb, e.g., Bartlett, with no observing planned. That way, it's not such an expedition for families. It would be rain or shine, if we have it at a park with a sheltered picnic area, with comfortable picnic tables and perhaps a grill. Such is the case at Ellendale park, where we had the picnic two years ago. (It was a major hassle for me, and especially for Ric Honey, to transport my grill down to Burton's and back.) Other scheduled observing sessions would be held as usual, and could be canceled due to weather without affecting the picnic. At the present time in our society, RSVP no longer seems to have much significance. Therefore, we will consider switching to a pot-luck format for future picnics. Each family could decide to show up or not, bringing enough food for themselves, plus anything they might want to share. The grill would be available for anyone who wanted to cook something for themselves. These changes would greatly reduce the level of uncertainty when attempting to plan a picnic. Bill Busler, President Memphis Astronomical Society
