Preamble: Questions to the holders of the chair SKF Aerospace, a company belonging to the SKF Group specialised in bearings and lubrication systems for the aerospace industry, and INSA Lyon announce the creation of a Teaching and Research Chair dedicated to the study of lubricated interfaces, as part of the sponsorship programme run by the Foundation of INSA Lyon. This international Chair, which combines innovation and leading players in research, is to be jointly coordinated by Philippe Vergne and Guillermo E. Morales Espejel. Philippe Vergne, CNRS Senior Scientist at INSA Lyon, Contact and Structural Mechanics Laboratory (LaMCoS, CNRS UMR5259), Guillermo E. Morales Espejel (PhD, MEng), SKF Principal Scientist on Tribology, Lubrication and Bearing Life, Visiting Professor at LaMCoS since Q- What is the subject of the Chair sponsored by SKF? The aim of this six-year Chair, entitled «Lubricated Interfaces for the Future», is to carry out an upstream, crossfunctional study covering the identification, understanding and modelling of the behaviour of lubricants under extreme conditions imposed by the lubricated interfaces. In the field of aerospace, in particular, lubricants (often complex fluids due to their nature and composition) play a crucial role in reducing friction losses, wear and the risk of damage. One of the objectives of the Chair is to anticipate future developments dictated by economic, social and environmental constraints. The subjects addressed will particularly focus on: - Lubricating fluids: From rheology to lubrication, - Lubricants and complex fluids: From molecular mechanisms to lubrication, - Free surface flows in lubrication, fluid/solid interactions. Q- How will you carry out your mission as co-holders of the Chair? Based on real industrial issues, this joint mission provides ideal conditions to identify scientific and technical blocking points in order to establish an upstream research strategy, developed through the Chair. Our mission is to drive and define the scientific themes to be developed. We supervise the research work conducted by the Chair s team, which will eventually comprise a dozen people, including 4 PhD students, post-doctoral researchers or contracted engineers. We also aim to develop our exchanges with the SKF Group, to disseminate the results obtained through the work conducted within the Chair and to encourage further more application-based work. In parallel with our research activities, the Training aspect will be promoted through SKF s sponsorship of the GMD Department, the reception of interns on sites located throughout Europe, the involvement of SKF researchers in 3rd cycle training modules and raising awareness about the importance of R&D. Q- Can you tell us a little about the inauguration of the Chair? On Wednesday 29 May at 10:15 am in «La Rotonde» building, we will be announcing the official creation of the Chair, in the presence of: - Alexander De Vries - SKF Group Product Development Director, - Guilhem De Cazenove - SKF Aerospace France Managing Director, who will give two conferences on the following themes respectively: - «Rolling bearings - A technological challenge», - «2020, Aerospace technological challenge». The launch of the Chair, supported by the INSA Lyon Foundation, is the result of a relationship of trust and the successful partnership that have existed for more than 12 years between the LaMCoS laboratory and the R&D services of SKF. 3
I THE SKF - INSA LYON CHAIR: «lubricated interfaces for the future» SKF Aerospace, a company belonging to the SKF Group specialised in bearings and lubrication systems for the aerospace industry, and INSA Lyon announce the joint creation of a Teaching and Research Chair dedicated to the study of lubricated interfaces, as part of the sponsorship programme run by the Foundation of INSA Lyon. The Chairs run by the INSA Lyon Foundation, as part of a corporate sponsorship programme, are an integral component of the School s institutional policy. They are proposed as free-standing programmes, in addition to specific research contracts. They make it possible to: - Create a focal point for thought and debate concerning the issue of innovation and provide private and public players with the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas, - Support the development of research and training excellence, in particular concerning emerging themes on interfaces designed for and with partner companies, - Integrate high-level research in the strategic planning of your company, - Promote the image of the partner company, and establish its reputation and employer brand among students at INSA Lyon. 1. A theme at the heart of today s technological and industrial challenges The overall, underlying challenge of this Chair, in the field of lubrication, is to respond to technological, environmental and economic issues such as: increasing lifespans, decreasing energy losses, reducing the use of fossil-based materials, and reducing the costs for the design and operation of mechanical systems. Consequently, the scope of the Chair covers several issues in the field of lubricated interfaces to identify solutions for the future, for example bearings, joints and screw systems. In this context, lubricants (often complex fluids due to their nature and composition) play a crucial role in reducing friction losses and in reducing the risk of damage. They are subject to severe stress of different types: pressure gradients and confinement, temperature increase, intense shearing forces, interaction with the environment, etc. Through this Chair, it is therefore vital for the SKF Group - a world leader in the supply of bearings, seals, mechatronics, lubrication systems and related services - to develop its understanding on how lubricants meet these demands, to be able to model its response and integrate this in simulation tools, thereby enabling the company to improve lubricant specification according to the application. 2. The missions and objectives of the Chair This teaching and research Chair is organised around 3 components: Research: The Chair has a special research partnership mission with SKF, providing access to strategic high-level expertise. The Chair will provide SKF with direct access to research and will enable the company to orient the work, while ensuring broad recognition for its active commitment in this field. SKF and INSA Lyon will develop joint expertise in the subjects addressed by the Chair. The first projects to be addressed by the Chair are the following: - Lubricant fluids: From rheology to lubrication - Establishing the link between the composition/structure/behaviour of lubricants is essential for predicting the behaviour of lubricated contacts and the lifespan of bearings. - Significance for the manufacturer: 70 % of the bearings are grease lubricated; they are polymers and additives (EP, VI, anti-wear, friction modifiers, etc.) in almost all industrial oils. - Lubricants and complex fluids: from molecular mechanisms to lubrication - Understanding the inter- or intra-molecular mechanisms that govern interactions between the components of the lubricant and/or between the molecules of the lubricant and the solids surface. - Significance for the manufacturer: better control of the match between the composition of a lubricant and the materials with which it comes into contact; support the trend towards reducing the volume of lubricant used (minimum lubrication, lubrication on-demand) and film thickness (nano-lubrication). 4
- Free surface flows in lubrication, fluid/solid interactions: - From the inlet zone of the interface to lubrication, or how physical-chemical properties and the environment can control how lubricated contacts operate. - Significance for the manufacturer: how the lubricant quantity / present at the entry point of a contact helps to separate the surfaces / present at the exit point of a contact helps to reform a film; estimate the consequences of trapped solid particles dragged into the interface Training The Chair also includes a Training component, with a transfer of knowledge and skills among teachers, researchers, PhD students and post-doctoral researchers at LaMCoS, and among SKF engineers and researchers, as well as engineering students involved in the teaching programme. The Chair will promote exchanges, awareness and reflection about fluid lubrication, especially as regards bearings, between the industrial partner and the students on the engineering programme, the PhD and Master s students at INSA Lyon, through different types of actions established by joint agreement between the Parties. These actions will include: - Sponsorship of classes in the Mechanical Engineering and Development Department, - Involvement of SKF researchers in training modules aimed at raising awareness about the importance of R&D, and the need to combine cross-disciplinary expertise to solve practical problems; target audience: Engineering and Master s students, - End-of-study internships with SKF for engineering students, focusing on subjects related to «Lubricated Interfaces for the Future», - Finally, since the international dimension is a key aspect of the Chair, one of the objectives will be to raise awareness among all INSA Lyon students about international operations and constraints, the recognition of engineering degrees and PhDs in business, and multi-cultural management Communication Information and communication campaigns will also be conducted: publications in scientific and technical journals, seminars, workshops and symposiums aimed at industrial professionals, or even a broader audience, depending on the case. 3. The partners of the Chair: The SKF Group SKF is one of the world s leading providers of bearings, seals, mechatronic components, lubrication systems and services including technical support, maintenance and reliability services, technical advice and training. SKF is represented in more than 130 countries and has a network of approximately 15,000 distributors around the world. It has brought together 1,300 former graduates and 450 student-parent donors, representing personal donations of more than e560,000. The Foundation, whose goal is to raise e15 million over five years, supports the development of INSA Lyon through funding in four main strategic areas: Building for the future by developing Education and Research to serve engineering students, companies and socio-economic organisations; Promoting the integration of culture, science and societal issues in the training of future engineers; enrolling, supporting and integrating students from different socio-cultural backgrounds are part of INSA Lyon s founding values and philosophy; Drawing on the strength of 6 multidisciplinary sections to address environmental issues, notably the challenge of sustainable construction and habitats, in order to enable companies to combine growth and sustainable development; Developing an attractive campus in terms of the real-estate and environmental assets as well as the services proposed to engineering students. 6
II Background of the co-holders: expertise in tribology The «Lubricated Interfaces for the Future» teaching and research Chair was developed by Philippe Vergne - DR CNRS and Guillermo E. Morales - PhD.MEng - Principal Scientist/SKF. The Chair is the result of a long-standing partnership between the LaMCoS laboratory at INSA Lyon and the SKF Group, reciprocal exchanges of expertise, professional relationship developed through many research contracts and the presence of Guillermo E. Morales as part-time visiting professor from SKF at LaMCoS since For example, LaMCoS has developed a unique device called Tribogyr, which stands out due its size and performance. In addition to the many visits it has attracted, this platform was the subject of an article entitled «The Beast of Lyon» in SKF s internal newsletter Evolution, in January The respective expertise, areas of scientific specialisation and research activities of the two co-holders cover the following aspects: 1. for philippe vergne: - Analysis of the rheological and tribological behaviour of multiphase fluids under conditions mirroring those of lubricated contacts, - Development of experimental methodologies for in situ mapping of the physical and tribological parameters that characterise a lubricated interface, - Development of multi-physics simulation tools in the context of lubrication, from the nano scale to that of a contact. The general idea behind this research is to offer a deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms that control both the lubricant film thickness and the interfacial friction, to model these effects in a proper way and to validate the modelling by comparison with the results obtained from analytical tribometers. This activity is strongly related to the lubricants rheological characterization based on a set of original devices (some working under very high pressure), and on the modelling of their behaviour under extreme pressure, shearing and confinement conditions. The application of this research covers lubrication of rolling element bearings, engine components, micromechanisms, spatial mechanisms and metal forming. The background of philippe vergne Education 2002 Qualification as Director of Research, INSA-Lyon & UCB-Lyon PhD in Mechanical Engineering, INSA-Lyon 1981 GMD Engineer Degree, INSA-Lyon Experience and responsibilities 2010 Co-founder and coordinator of the imust Labex 2006 Elected member then Vice-president of the INSA-Lyon Scientific Committee 2002 CNRS Senior Scientist, LaMCoS, INSA-Lyon 1998 Head of the Lubrication Models and Lubricants research team CNRS Research Associate, LMC, INSA-Lyon - Opponent for PhD abroad (Sweden, The Netherlands, Portugal, Australia) - Expert for the evaluation of national projects - Regular reviewer for the majority of Tribology international journals, and for physical chemistry journals - Member of international congress committees, especially for the Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology - Author of more than 100 publications in peer-review international journals and in conference proceedings - More than 20 PhD thesis supervised 7
2. for guillermo e. morales espejel: - Semi-analytical modelling in tribological problems. This is necessary for understanding and then modelling the lifespan in heavily loaded, lubricated and dry contacts with rolling/sliding. - His publications cover work on semi-analytical solutions developed for micro contacts - dry and lubricated elastohydrodynamics (micro-ehd), pressure, film thickness, internal stresses, friction and heat, dependence of thickness with respect to speed in heavily loaded contacts, Ertel-Grubin methods for determining friction, the wave characteristics of surfaces and transient effects, loss of viscosity through shearing, analysis of the entry area as regards the issue of the normal static and dynamic approach, «shakedown» in lubricated gear systems, and, lastly, the impact of indentation and surface topography on the lifespan of the bearing.
