1 Job Description Purpose of the job To support the work of the Legal Team in investigating, taking forward and preparing cases which have been referred for adjudication. Main responsibilities Case management 1. Managing the preparation of cases referred for adjudication, including drafting instructions to Counsel, agreeing charges, attending case conferences, taking witness statements, liaising with doctors, defence solicitors and others involved parties and monitoring the progress of the case. 2. Participating in other pre-hearing preparations as required. 3. Dealing with basic and complex correspondence from interested parties. 4. Instructing experts under guidance. Appeals and Judicial Reviews 5. Participating in the preparation of responses to Judicial Reviews and appeals including liaising with senior managers, solicitors and Counsel and attending hearings. Staff supervision 6. Supervising the work of others as required

2 General 7. Maintaining computer records and keeping accurate management information as required 8. Providing cover for colleagues, as required. 9. Undertaking such other reasonable duties as may be required from time to time. KG 2

3 Key Skills There are 4 Key Skills for this post: Key Skill 1 - Written communication skills a. It is important that the post holder is able to write clear, concise and accurate plain English. This includes the ability to summarise cases concisely and accurately, to frame sound proposals and to write plain English to the public and the profession explaining the procedures followed and decisions made. The post holder may also be involved in drafting charges and reports. Key Skill 2 - Technical knowledge and skills b. Experience of dealing with complex casework is essential c. The postholder must have the ability to work within a framework bound by statutory and other regulations, to interpret and apply them appropriately. d. An ability to understand legal and procedural issues is essential. e. Post holders will be required to prepare and/or check complex documents. f. The ability to work to high standards of accuracy, with unwavering attention to detail is essential, even when working under pressure. g. Sound computer skills are required. h. The ability to maintain confidentiality is essential. 3

4 Key Skill 3 - Interpersonal skills i. Good interpersonal skills are needed in dealing with members of the Council, members of the public and the medical and legal professions in a manner that is courteous, fair, efficient and economical in terms of time. The postholder should be articulate, logical and patient, and must be able to listen effectively especially when interviewing witnesses. j. Post holders must be flexible in their approach to their work and be willing to support and assist other team members and to promote sound team-working relationships. Key Skill 4 - Organisational skills k. The ability to work to strict deadlines and performance targets, to be selfstarting and to retain a high level of accuracy is essential. l. Good time management and personal organisation of work are important as is the capacity to organise very large amounts of paper and to keep careful track of cases as the postholder will hold their own caseload. m. Applicants must demonstrate acceptable levels of achievement against performance targets and objectives, and possess a satisfactory work record. KG 4

5 Terms and conditions The following terms and conditions apply to this post: Salary: 22,413 (Salary band: 22,413 to 29,541 a year, with an exceptional maximum of 32,600). Annual leave: Pension: Other Benefits: Hours of work: Location: 25 days a year, increasing 1 day per each year of service up to a maximum of 30 days. You are required to use up to two of these days should the GMC decide to close its offices over the Christmas holiday. Membership of the GMC Staff Superannuation Scheme. This is a final-salary scheme which is contracted out. Members of the scheme pay a contribution of 5% of salary through a salary sacrifice scheme. You will be eligible to join the pension scheme as soon as you start work at the GMC. Private medical insurance cover with AXA PPP Healthcare. Health checks with BMI Health Services. Employee assistance programme with AXA ICAS. Cycle to Work Scheme Childcare Voucher Scheme 35 hours per week: 09:00-17:00 Monday to Friday. Manchester: 3 Hardman Street, Manchester, M3 3AW. A no smoking policy is in operation and members of staff are not permitted to smoke in any of the GMC s buildings at any time. 5
