When you go abroad, you will certainly meet people who can speak some English. So if you want to travel and make new friends English is very important. English is the language of business and science. For example, scientists and doctors must read books in English and speak English at international conferences. It is also the language of technology. For example, computers and computer programmes use many English words. So it is easier to find a job it you know some English. Finally sports and pop music use a lot of English words. Many sports come from Britain and have English names like football, rugby, tennis and golf. Most pop songs are in English and you must know some English if you want to understand them. 6 OUR TOWN: we all live in Porto Potenza Picena Porto Potenza Picena is a lovely town on the Adriatic coast. It's about 40 Km. from Ancona and it's situated in the centre of Italy, in the region Marche, in the province of Macerata. Potenza Picena is the main town, which is about 6 km. far from the coast and it s on a hill at 237 metres above the sea level. Porto Potenza Picena is the seaside area. It hasn't got a big population, only about 8000 inhabitants, but a lot of tourists come here in summer because it is a nice seaside resort and has long and beautiful sandy beaches. In the summer they are very crowded. In particular the promenade along the sea is an ideal place to walk and meet friends. In the centre of Porto Potenza there is a quite beautiful square with a big church. Via Regina Margherita is the main street of our town, and it is quite a mile long. In P.P.P. there are two churches, an old one and a more recent one. There are of course a lot of shops, bars, a disco, arcades, restaurants, chemists', tobacconists', grocers', ice-cream shop, perfumeries, a florist's, supermarkets, bakers', greengrocers' and so on, but there isn't a big shop centre. Here in P.P.P. there are gardens, pubs, a lot of hotels by sea, campsites near the beach and a lot of services of public utility, for example there is the Town Hall, schools, the post office, the Police Station, the Railway Station, bus lines, banks, cinemas, and so on... but in our town there isn't a hospital, there aren't museums and there isn't a library, as my town isn't very big. There are also a lot of sports facilities, such as tennis courts, football grounds, basketball grounds and also a nautical centre. In the centre of my town there is even still an ancient tower. On the right of the tower there is the Church of Sant'Anna. The tower of the porto is what remains of an ancient fortress, an observatory, which served in the past to protect the land from the frequent pirates raids, and to warn the inhabitants of danger. Today the town has an important role in helping the physically disabled, in fact here I P.P.P. there is the famous Santo Stefano Rehabilitation Centre with its extremely modern equipment and machinery. Even the structures, the gardens and the beaches of our town are designed for disabled access. In July there is the traditional Festival of Sant Anna. It lasts several days with religious celebrations, a lot of public shows and high quality fireworks. In September there is also the Festival of Grappolo D Oro in Potenza Picena. GASTRONOMY Our area offers a great variety of food and wines, great dishes from land and sea and a lot of dish specialties. Two important local wines are The Bianco dei Colli Maceratesi and Rosso Piceno. Rosso Conero is one of the best red wines in the world and goes splendidly with meat dishes. The most famous dish is the brodetto : a soup with many different kinds of fish. Also the grilled blue fish is very famous: you can eat it with your fingers when it's still piping hot! A particular pasta dish, common throughout the Macerata area, is vincisgrassi. This is similar to lasagne but it is a local variety. Not to forget the salami, and the extra-virgin olive oil. There are also a lot of interesting places you can visit around Porto Potenza, for example: CIVITANOVA ALTA : the birthplace of the first translator of the Eneide, Annibal Caro. MACERATA : the chief town of the province, with its important Sferisterio. RECANATI : the birthplace of the famous Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi. LORETO : with its Sanctuary of the Saint House, a place of continuous pilgrimages, visited by millions of pilgrims of all nationalities. MONTECOSARO : with its important Medieval church, the Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata or Santa Maria a Piè di Chienti. It s a Church of the Romanic Periodo f the 9th century.

7 THE CONERO PARK : a place of great geological interest. The mountain reaches 572 metres above the sea level. It is an enchanting natural paradise. We love our town because it s a quiet place to live in and there isn t too much noise and too much traffic. The weather is always very good, it s usually hot in summer and it s not very cold in winter. The people here are very friendly and gentle. We have clean air. The air is not polluted and it s better than in other big towns or cities. There aren t big social problems, like crime and violence. The streets aren t too dangerous for us. Our town gained the BLUE FLAG, for the best beaches worldwide. It s a certification, an award, by the FEE ( Foundation for Environmental Education ) and certificates that our beach and marina meets its standards (water quality, safety, services, environmental education and information. ) for more info: visit the official website. Being environmental makes you gentle! Next time you throw out your rubbish Remember to make a wish Wish for the world to be a cleaner place Where everyone has a healthy living space. What do we put all our rubbish in? Our plastic and paper and glass? We put it all in a recycling bin And certainly not on the grass When we collect and divide our rubbish Our plastic bags and old batteries We protect ourselves, our trees and our fish Not to mention the birds and the buzzy bees Recycle everything, everywhere and everyday Because it makes the world a far better place To have fun and play!

8 Here are tips for a green life Doctor earth says: STOP POLLUTION!!! 1. Don t waste paper. Use the back of old pieces of paper for writing notes. 2. Recycle glass, paper, plastic and tin. Put your rubbish in the special bins to recycle it! 3. In cold weather, don t leave doors and windows open. Open doors and windows mean extra electricity for heating! 4. Turn off the lights when you leave a room. 5. Turn your TV or other appliances off when you aren't using then (when power stations makes electricity, they produce sulphur dioxide, which pollutes the air. Then we get acid rain, which is bad for the land). Do not leave them in the stand-by mode. 6. Don't leave the tap on while you brush your teeth - just turn it on at the beginning and end. 7. Have a shower, not a bath - a bath uses more water. Water is very important. Don't waste it!!! Save water!! 8. Don't leave rubbish on the beach! 9. Don't throw plastic bottles into the sea! 10. Remember... our world is becoming more and more polluted, and the best way to protect it, is to change the way we live. So... the next time you are ready to throw something away, ask: Can I reuse it? Can it be recycled? Can it be reprocessed? Can I give it to a friend?
