Further information is available at the University s website ( PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES The Bachelor of Nursing Programme aims to nurture a caring and professional nurse who is proactive and adaptable, a competent, safe and ethical clinician, a creative and critical thinker, an informed consumer of practice evidence, and an independent lifelong learner. Graduates of the Programme will embody the ACU graduates intellectual and professional values and attributes. 3 PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The Programme consists of 8 units listed as follows: Core (7 units) NRHK300 Spirituality in Health Care NRHK301 Promoting Health in Extended Care NRHK302 Trends in Professional Nursing NRHK303 Advanced Health Assessment NRHK304 Leading for Quality Nursing Care NRHK305 Research for Practice Improvement NRHK306 Practice Issues in Nursing Electives (1 unit)* NRHK307 Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine NRHK308 Partnerships in Chronicity NRHK309 Practice Project (Prerequisite: NRHK305 Research for Practice Improvement) * Electives will be offered only if the minimum number of enrolment is reached MODE OF STUDY The Programme is delivered via the following modes: 1. Lectures: Teaching staff from ACU will conduct intensive face-to-face lectures for all eight units of the Programme (18 hours per unit). Teaching staff of ACU will contribute to the teaching of 12 hours per unit while Hong Kong teaching staff will contribute to the teaching of 6 hours per unit. 2. Tutorials: Tutorials are conducted at the Tseung Kwan O Campus of CIHE by Hong Kong teaching staff to assist students in their studies, assignments, and preparation for examinations (18 hours per unit). 3. Self-active Learning Sessions: Self-active learning sessions are supported by comprehensive and quality study packages provided by the University. The study package consists of the unit materials, a unit outline, and a list of relevant readings. Students have to incorporate 7 hours in their study plan for self-active learning for each unit. October trimester. Two units will be offered in each trimester. The units offered are as follows: Weeks 1-2 Pre-readings and lectures are usually held in week 1 to week 2 of each unit. 12 hours of lectures will be conducted on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings by ACU lecturers. Weeks 3-6 Lectures and tutorials are arranged intermittently during these weeks. 6 hours of lectures and 18 hours of tutorials for each unit will be conducted on Tuesday and Thursday evenings by Hong Kong teaching staff. Week 7 Make up classes, if any, will be conducted in this week. At the same time, students are strongly recommended to start their revision for examinations. Week 8 Final Examinations are held and assessments are due in this week. The cycle then repeats for another unit in offered the trimester. Classes will normally take place at the Tseung Kwan O Campus of CIHE. LEARNING SUPPORT & FACILITIES Students enrolled in the Programme will be provided with the following learning support: A University-developed comprehensive study package will be provided for each module. The study package consists of module specifications, lecture handouts, tutorial materials, assessment tasks and a list of recommended readings. Access to the electronic library resources of the University. Access to the web-based learning environment, and student learning support services, of the University. A collection of recommended textbooks and references for the Programme is available at the Institute library. This is regularly updated to include the most recent relevant publications. Access to library, language centre and computer facilities of CIHE. DURATION AND SCHEDULE The normal period of time for successful completion of the Programme is 16 months of part-time study. In each academic year, there are three 16-week trimesters the November- February trimester, the March-June trimester and the July-

4 CAREER PROSPECTS AND FURTHER STUDIES Graduates from the Bachelor of Nursing Programme can gain employment in both public and private sectors, in a wide range of areas including health care, elderly care, maternity and infant care, nursing researcher and so on. Graduates may apply to undertake postgraduate studies in related disciplines such as the Master of Health Science offered by ACU. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Holders of a pre-registration Nursing qualification in Diploma or Higher Diploma programmes from recognised institutions or equivalent; AND A license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Hong Kong. Applicants with other qualifications regarded as equivalent to the above will be considered by ACU on a case-by-case basis. English language proficiency should be to a minimum level of: IELTS with an overall score of 6.0, including individual scores of 6.0 for writing and speaking tests and 5.5 for listening and reading test; OR TOEFL a score of 550 and TWE 4.5; or a computer-based score of 210 with an essay rating of 4.5. Exemption from the above English language proficiency requirement applies to those applicants who have completed English language courses or used English as teaching medium within their Diploma or Higher Diploma programmes ASSESSMENT POLICY & GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Assessment for each unit will be based on performance in the prescribed coursework assignments and/or the final examination. Students taking the Programme in Hong Kong are assessed by the same method and on the same basis as other ACU students studying in Australia. Assignments are normally marked by local tutors and examinations are marked by ACU teaching staff. In order to graduate, students must satisfactorily complete the required 8 units. TUITION FEES AND MODE OF PAYMENT The tuition fee is set at AU$1,250 per unit, which covers instruction, study materials, tutorials/workshops, examinations, information transmission services and access to Institute facilities. The total tuition fees are AU$10,000 for 8 units. Tuition fees are subject to review annually. Students who do not complete their studies within four consecutive trimesters are subject to any fee increase applied to the trimesters at a later stage. Tuition fees are payable in advance in four instalments of AU$2,500 and should be paid four weeks before the commencement of each trimester. Payment of tuition fees is made by Cashier s Order or crossed cheque made payable to Caritas - Hong Kong (ES), which should be forwarded to the Programme Officer at CAPS, CIHE. Tuition fees paid will not be refunded unless there is a premature cessation of the Programme, in which case refund will be made one month after the scheduled commencement of the trimester. Tuition fees paid are not transferable. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Bachelor of Nursing students may apply for the non-means tested loan from the Government through the Student Financial Assistance Agency. A pplication for admission can be made only on the University application form. 2. T he application form can be obtained by phone, fax or mail from CIHE CAPS, Room 308, 18 Chui Ling Road, Tseung Kwan O, New Territories, Hong Kong. 3. T he duly completed application form and Informed Consent/ Privacy Declaration form must be submitted in person, to be accompanied by: (a) copies of supporting certificates, diplomas and relevant transcripts as evidence of academic and professional qualifications obtained for certification purpose, (b) c opy of a valid practising certificate as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong (c) copy of HKID card or passport, (d) a recent passport-sized photograph and (e) a non-refundable application fee of HK$ (payable by cash/ cheque and made payable to Caritas Hong Kong (ES) ). CLOSING DATES FOR APPLICATION All applications must be submitted to CAPS of CIHE on or before the closing dates, which are 30 September, 31 January and 31 May respectively for intakes in November, March and July. COMMENCEMENT DATES The commencement dates for each trimester of the Bachelor of Nursing Programme are set for early November, early March and early July.

5 UNIT DESCRIPTIONS NRHK300 SPIRITUALITY IN HEALTH CARE In this unit, students will explore spirituality from multiple views including monotheisim and polytheism within the diverse contexts of health care for the human person in health and illness. The importance of health professionals understanding their own and others spirituality and the complex expressions of that spirituality will also be explored. This unit will assist students to formulate and provide spiritual care as part of a health care team, recognising and respecting the uniqueness and dignity of the human person. NRHK301 PROMOTING HEALTH IN EXTENDED CARE This nursing theory unit will develop students understanding of the importance of promoting health, well-being and quality of life for older people and those people of all ages and their families who are living with life-limiting illnesses. The commonalities and differences between these two areas of extended care will be examined within a continuum of care services, focusing on the role of the nurse in the interdisciplinary team. Through inquiry-based learning, this unit will enable students to provide evidence-based, person-centred care for older people and those who are living with life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, and who may require curative, healing, rehabilitative-supportive, and/or palliative care services. NRHK302 TRENDS IN PROFESSIONAL NURSING Within a context of globalisation and the dynamic nature of health care, this unit will provide students with the opportunity to explore contemporary issues that are impacting on nursing practice, education and research. The future challenges and opportunities for nursing related to these issues will be examined from the perspective of the professional nurse s role. Strategies for career management and care of the professional self will be developed to sustain the ongoing learning and development of the nurse and others. NRHK303 ADVANCED HEALTH ASSESSMENT This unit focuses on health assessment and clinical decisionmaking in complex care. Students will extend their knowledge and skills in health assessment practice as it applies to physical, psychosocial and cognitive health across the lifespan for individuals, families and communities. Communication skills will be extended to encompass interviewing and documentation skills relevant to advanced health assessment and clinical decision-making in complex health situations. NRHK304 LEADING FOR QUALITY IN NURSING CARE This unit will provide opportunities for students to reflect on their experiences of leadership in nursing practice, extending their knowledge of contemporary approaches to leadership and management in nursing. Leadership will be considered as a core element of professional nursing in supporting change for quality and safety in nursing care. NRHK305 RESEARCH FOR PRACTICE IMPROVEMENT In the context of evidence-based practice and quality improvement, professional nurses are expected to undertake projects that will improve person-centred nursing care and optimise patient outcomes. In this unit, students will explore the notion of practice improvement as a basis for the conduct of research relevant to their area of practice as well as the philosophical, theoretical, clinical and practical considerations underpinning the planning of research projects. Students will be guided in the development and presentation of a research proposal. NRHK306 PRACTICE ISSUES IN NURSING This unit addresses practice issues in contemporary health practice. Nursing codes of conduct and ethics will be reviewed. Legal, cultural, social and spiritual factors that influence individual values and beliefs will be explored. Reflection and reasoning skills will be further developed to analyse common ethico-legal dilemmas encountered in nursing practice. NRHK307 INTRODUCTION TO TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE This unit will introduce students to the history, development, philosophy and concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Students will be able to understand how particular understandings of the human body, health and illness can determine different, contradictory, and complementary assessment and treatment approaches in the practice of TCM. Students will also be able to examine the role of the nurse and his/her scope of practice, determined by their regulatory authority, in relation to practising in an environment in which TCM may or may not be integrated with Western medicine. Additionally, students will be able to determine how concepts from TCM can be integrated into their personal and professional nursing practice. NRHK308 PARTNERSHIPS IN CHRONICITY This nursing theory unit will enable students to plan and implement safe and effective strategies for meeting the needs of individuals, families and communities affected by chronic illness and/or disability. The unit will further develop students knowledge relating to collaborative care and the concept of partnerships in the planning and implementation of care. Students will explore the pathophysiolological, psychological and spiritual impact of chronic health problems, and/or disability. NRHK309 PRACTICE PROJECT (PREREQUISITE: NRHK305) In this unit, students will be guided as they undertake a practice improvement project that addresses the topic developed in the unit Research for Practice Improvement. Students will write a report on the processes and outcomes of their project.
