1 Research Note Mobile working in a company In July 2015, Cortado Mobile Solutions GmbH surveyed 215 business users and IT managers in Germany and the United Kingdom, asking them about their experience of working with smartphones and tablets. Summary All of the users were of the opinion that Google s Android and Apple s ios are the most advanced operating systems. Android and ios users (around 60%) believe that their relevant operating system is significantly more technically mature than Windows Phone users (32%). None of the respondents believes that BlackBerry is a leading operating system. In the United Kingdom, Android users are more impressed by Android than Apple users are by ios. In Germany however, Apple users are more impressed by ios than Android users are by Android. More than half of the users (52%) place more trust in the operating system they use than a security solution of a third-party provider. In Germany (41%), the level of trust placed in the security of the operating system is lower than in the United Kingdom (61%). In relation to security, significantly more users generally swear by the ios operating system than they do by the Android operating system. The demands placed on an enterprise mobility solution have increased: access to the internal file server is the top productivity function for 65.6% of the respondents; printing, a function that not many people would immediately think of, is still considered to be an important feature by one in three of the respondents. Recommendations Users demands on mobile devices have become much greater but so has the level of trust placed in the operating systems themselves, as they are now not only deemed to be secure but also technically mature. Companies should invest in enterprise mobility solutions that allow them to use the potential of advanced mobile operating systems effectively in a business context.

2 1. What do you think is the most advanced operating system? Not surprisingly, all of the users were of the opinion that Android and ios are the most advanced operating systems. Interestingly, 19% of the users were unable to decide. The same percentage of Android and ios users believes that the other operating system is better (17.6%). Windows Phone users are of the opinion that Android (37.8%) is the most technically mature operating system. Android and ios are also in the top positions among those who do not use smartphones and tablets. 2

3 Comparison of the assessment of the most advanced operating system between Germany and the United Kingdom Analyzing users based on their country of origin shows that Android users in the United Kingdom are more impressed by Android (73.2%) than Apple users are by ios (51.8%). In Germany however, Apple users are more impressed by ios (65.2%) than Android users are by Android (45.5%). 4 2. In relation to security, do you trust the operating system for your smartphone and/or tablet? Cortado asked the respondents whether they trust the operating system for their smartphone and/or tablet in relation to security or whether they would prefer to use an additional solution to protect their data. Earlier versions of the mobile operating systems typically contained significant security vulnerabilities. However, the systems are now much more technically mature in this respect. This is also reflected in the users level of trust. Whereas, originally, additional third-party solutions were necessary to provide greater security, more than half (52.3%) of the users now place more trust in the level of security offered by the operating system than by a third-party solution. 5 Comparison between the United Kingdom/Germany The analysis based on the users country of origin once again shows that there is a clear difference between Germany and the United Kingdom. In the United Kingdom (61.5%), the level of trust placed in the security of the operating system is significantly greater than in Germany (40.7%). Not sure United Kingdom Germany Analyzing the responses show that there are clear differences between the users of the different operating systems as regards security. On the whole ios (58.8%) and Windows Phone users (56.1%) place more trust in their relevant operating system than Android users (39.2%). Even among BlackBerry users, the level of trust is greater (46.4%) than the level of distrust (35.7%). At this point, it is worth noting that the survey was conducted before Android for Work was developed and well before it was rolled out for use on smartphones and tablets. It will be interesting to see how the level of trust placed in Android will develop in the near future. 6 As already mentioned, the analysis of the operating systems based on the two countries once again shows that Germans level of trust in their own operating system is significantly lower than the level of trust UK users place in their own operating system. Windows Phone (50.0%) and ios (43.5%) have a higher score than Android and Blackberry (each scoring 30%). 7 3. Which concept does your company use to enable employees to work while mobile? One quarter of the respondents (25.1%) is employed at a company or organization that relies on the use of private smartphones and tablets for work (bring your own device BYOD). However, almost one fifth of the respondents stated that there is no concept within their workplace. As multiple answers were possible, this resulted in an impressive rate of 92.3% of companies that have a concept for mobile working. 8 In the summer of 2014, Cortado surveyed 173 business users on the topic of Mobile working in a company. In 2015, the percentage of companies and organizations that have a BYOD concept has risen compared to last year s survey. At the same time, there is a noticeable shift from COPE to Devices provided by the company for work purposes only (no personal use). The respondents believe that the demands placed on an enterprise mobility solution are diverse. Among the actual functions, access to the internal file server achieved a particularly high score of 65.7%, which is considerably above the demand for access to online storage. Windows functions is a feature that has experienced the most growth in demand last year this was only mentioned by one in three respondents, whereas one in two respondents of this year s survey named this feature as being important. Multiple answers were possible to this question regarding the most important functions in an enterprise mobility solution. 10 Number of functions relevant in an enterprise mobility solution The number of users who specified up to two functions has significantly decreased. In contrast, the number of users who consider five or more functions to be important has unmistakably increased. This is a clear indication that enterprise mobility has improved in the degree of maturity. Statistical data The respondents included IT administrators (26%), heads of departments (14%), CEOs (11%), and IT directors (6%). 35% of the respondents work for companies with more than 1,500 employees and a further 34% work in organizations in which there are between 1 and 99 employees. 36% of the respondents work for companies with between 21 and 500 mobile users. Interestingly, 17% of the companies have more than 1,000 employees who also work with a smartphone or tablet. 43.9% of the respondents are from Germany and 56.1% are from the United Kingdom. 52.3% of the respondents use an ios device (iphone/ipad) for business purposes, while 37.9% stated that they work with Android devices. 20.0% of the respondents own a Windows Phone smartphone or tablet, whereas 14.4% use a BlackBerry smartphone or tablet. 6.7% of the respondents stated that they do not use a smartphone or tablet for work.
