It is with great honor that the Southeast Kansas Education Service Center-Greenbush collaborates with the Kansas Department of Education and the Safe, Supportive Schools initiative to host the 2014 Kansas Bullying Prevention Conference. Much has been achieved to address positive school climate through policy development, training, and awareness to addressing bullying, but there is always more that remains to be done to ensure all students come to school ready to learn and feel connected. It is our hope that you will find this conference an interesting learning experience as we share ways to support students in achieving their best.

Josh s book: Light, Bright and Polite teaches kids of all ages that everything they post on social media will eventually be discovered by their parents, teachers, future colleges, and someday their employer. He shows families and teenagers practical examples they can use to always keep it Light, Bright and Polite on by posting photos of community volunteer projects that will help them shine online. 5 BREAK-OUT SESSIONS Student Led Bullying Prevention Initiatives USD 506 Labette County High School and USD 250 Pittsburg High School A panel of students and their sponsors will discuss how each district utilized the Friends of Rachel to create student driven Bullying Awareness and Prevention Clubs to raise awareness, provide education, and instill support for all students in their schools. Efforts include student presentations, visual aids, peer support, and youth led activities throughout the year. Teaching Teens and Tweens How to be Safe and Smart on Social Media Josh Ochs, Media Leaders Helping teens and tweens use social media as a portfolio of positive accomplishments. Josh s book: Light, Bright and Polite teaches kids of all ages that everything they post on social media will eventually be discovered by their parents, teachers, future colleges, and someday their employer. He shows families and teenagers practical examples they can use to always keep it Light, Bright and Polite by posting photos of community volunteer projects that will help them shine online. Putting the Pieces Together: Successful Bullying Prevention and Intervention Leslie Wohler, USD 383 Manhattan Participants will learn about comprehensive, research based, and effective bullying prevention and intervention utilizing the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. Best practice strategies, and resources will be shared from the nearly 10 years of successful implementation of the Olweus Program in the Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 school district. Using Second Step to Create Positive School Climate (Greenbush only) Amy DeLaRosa, Principal, Eudora Elementary School Eudora Elementary has found the Second Step program to be a very effective Tier I intervention for many reasons. First and foremost, this program provides consistent vocabulary and skill progression across the grade levels. We are recognizing children having the ability to name their emotions and feelings while using their words to tell others what it is that they need to be successful. Students are able to take ownership and successfully manage their own emotional well-being with the tools taught through the Second Step program. The Power of Global Collaboration (Wichita only) Jenny King, USD 385 Andover Session will cover how to get a project to a large audience, tools that can be used to facilitate global collaboration, the different phases of the project, and share experiences of students and teachers involved in the Global Teen Solutions project focused on bullying. The project began as a group of 8th grade Language Arts students whose teachers wanted to provide a global forum for students to discuss perspectives on bullying issues around the world and ultimately build a broader perspective for research. The hope was, through these discussions, we will not only help build an action plan for our school but to create a cultural friendship exchange with students all over the world.

6 ADDITIONAL PRESENTER BIOS Leslie Wohler received her undergraduate degree in Social Work from Kansas State University. She earned a Master s Degree in Social Welfare from the University of Kansas. She has worked with the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitative Services for three years conducting investigations and providing services to children and families. Mrs. Wohler became a School Social Worker in 1995 with the Geary Community School District and provided services for students and families in the Junction City / Ft. Riley area for 12 years. She is currently in her eighth year with the Manhattan-Ogden school district as a School Social Worker at Bergman Elementary. Mrs. Wohler is also a certified Olweus Bullying Prevention Program Trainer and helps oversee the Olweus program in the Manhattan-Ogden school district. Amy DeLaRosa Amy has a BS in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University, a MS in School Counseling from Fort Hays State University, as well as endorsements in ESOL, Building Leadership, and District Leadership all from Fort Hays State University. She has experience at multiple levels including classroom teacher, school counselor, principal, and superintendent. She is currently the Elementary Principal at Eudora Elementary School. Jenny King Jenny currently teaches 8th grade Language Arts at Andover Middle School. She has been in that position the last four years. Prior to coming to Andover, Jenny was a coach and adjunct professor at Kansas Wesleyan University for three years. She began her teaching career with USD 305 Salina where she taught 1st-5th grade writing, Kindergarten, and 7th grade Science throughout her five years in the district. Jenny also spent two summers teaching middle school Language Arts at St. John s Military School. COLLEGE CREDIT One hour of college credit is being offered from Pittsburg State University and Emporia State University. Credit is payable the day of the conference. CONTINUING EDUCATION At the completion of the conference, each participant will receive a confirmation that will include the total CEU hours the participant has earned for their attendance. An evaluation link will also be included in the . If a certificate of attendance is needed, contact Misty Burke at misty.burke@greenbush.org.
