About this manual This training manual will help you connect to the system used for the online delivery of courses from the Master in Information and Telecommunication Systems (ITS) at Ohio University. At ITS we employ a solution based on Adobe Connect to deliver live online courses via the Internet to registered students. 2. Systems Requirements To connect to Adobe Connect you will need either a Windows or Mac OS X based computer that complies with the requirements outlined at: In addition you will require: - A USB enabled headset with microphone. You will use the headset to listen to and transmit audio to the class. We recommend you to employ a headset that can be comfortably used for an extended period of time as classes last approximately three hours. - A webcam that can be activated by Adobe Connect. Most USB and integrated webcams are compatible with Adobe Connect. We recommend you to join the classroom from a quite place with low background noise. This will improve audio quality when you transmit audio to the classroom. 3. About Adobe Connect and the ITS connected classroom Adobe Connect is a client application that will allow you to access the ITS connected classroom. The first time you use the client you will be asked to allow your computer to install Adobe Add- Ins which will enable your Adobe Connect client to transmit and receive audio and video. The connected ITS classroom is located in the Athens campus. The classroom has been equipped with professional grade audio and video equipment that will allow you to remotely access: - Video and audio from your instructor - Slides (e.g. Powerpoint material) - Document camera - Chalkboard - On campus students attending the class 4. Accessing the online classroom 4.1 Connecting to the system To connect to the system you will need to use a browser and the URL and credentials provided to you via . 3 The next table illustrates the initial connection procedure: 1. Log into the meeting via the URL and credentials that were sent to you via 2. After logging in your display should look like the one below. 3. You should immediately hear the voice of the instructor if the meeting is in progress. If you are unable to hear the instructor while the meeting is in progress, alert the host via your chat pod (see details below). Each individual window inside Adobe Connect is called a pod. The Adobe Connect window has two main pods labeled share and video. In the share pod you will usually see any slides (e.g. Powerpoints) the instructor is using. The video pod will be used to deliver video from the classroom, blackboard or document camera. You should also see two additional pods, one listing the attendees and another one with a chat functionality. The attendees pod will always have a host (the host is the technical operator in charge of handling the equipment in the room) and a presenter (the instructor). While you are in a classroom, should you have any questions or comments regarding audio, video, or need assistance with other matters you can send a chat message to the host using the chat pod. 4.2 Asking questions To ask (or answer) questions during a class follow the procedure outlined below. 3

4 1. Raise your hand by clicking on the raise hand icon in the adobe connect toolbar. This is marked in red on the image below. 2. This will alert the host of the meeting. The host will then enable your audio which will be indicated on your screen as shown below. 3. After you receive this indication click on the microphone icon marked in red above to open your open microphone. 4. To transmit video, the host will also grant you video transmission rights. Adobe Connect will ask for permission to activate your video. 5. After receiving audio and video rights you can ask the question 4

5 After you ask the question the host will mute your audio and you will need to repeat the procedure outlined above (minus the system authorization) to ask another question. You can also ask questions by sending them to the host via the chat pod. He will then pass your question to the instructor. 4.3 Presenting your work Your instructor might require you to present material to the class via Adobe Connect. To do this, the host will first grant you presenter rights (your name will then appear under the presenter label in the attendees pod). You will then have access to share your audio, video and or slides (e.g. Powerpoint) via the pods. Adobe Connect has a very simple streamlined interface. We highly recommend you to look at the short training materials available at: In particular please take a look at the Quick Start Guide for Participants and the Sharing Screens and Applications video (approximately 3 minutes duration). 4.4 Breakout rooms Your instructor might require you to work in groups with other online or Athens campus students. To do this he will ask the host to divide the students into groups and place them in breakout rooms. 1. After the host places you in a Breakout room, your screen should look like the one below. *Note that every participant in a Breakout room is granted presenter permission. 5

6 2. Enable your audio and video by clicking on the microphone and webcam icons which are marked in red and labeled 1 and 2 respectively in the above image. 3. To send a chat message to the host of the meeting use chat box labeled 3 and marked in red in the above image. 6. To send a chat message to other participants in the Breakout room use the Chat pod. Once in breakout rooms all students have presenter status, and collaborate sharing audio and video. Once the group work time finishes the breakout rooms will end and your status will be of a participant again. 4.5 Lecture Recording All online ITS lectures will be recorded. Instructions on how to access the recordings will be sent separately. 6
