A hallmark of human nature is the ability to share information and to comprehend the thoughts and intentions of others It also sets us apart from other primates. However, before infants have developed social cognition and language, they communicate and learn new information by following the gaze of others and by using their own eye contact and gestures to show or direct the attention of the people around them. Scientists refer to this skill as joint attention. A) In most cases what other think or their assumptions may determine how a person would react B) This capability involves social cognition and makes a significant contribution to the foundations for language development C) Similarly social cognition for an infant is a process that normally continues until adulthood D) Sharing information through social networks may pose little, but serious threats for subscribers E) Thus, any objection would matter if other variables are not taken into consideration 33 If the others had taken sensible precautions as we did, this tragedy would never have happened. A) If only they would follow our example and behave in a reasonable manner, all this suffering could be avoided. B) If they had not behaved so foolishly, they would not have involved us, either, in this tragedy. C) The tragedy is that this could have been avoided if only they had all controlled their emotions. D) This tragic result could have been avoided, but, unlike us, the rest of them did not take reasonable measures. E) Whatever measure was taken, it was evident that the disaster was about to come 35. Defense formed the primary purpose of the castle. Until the introduction of gunpowder and cannon, the only siege engines employed were those known in ancient times. They included machines for hurling heavy stones and iron bolts, battering rams, and movable towers, from which the besiegers crossed over to the walls. Such engines could best be used on firm, level ground. Consequently, a castle would often be erected on a high cliff or hill, or on an island, or in the center of a swamp A) The next stage of the Development of Castles in England during the Middle Ages occurred during the reign of the Plantagenet King Edward I B) The Middle Ages encompass one of the most violent periods in English History are symbolized by the castles of the Middle Ages C) However, these gigantic fortresses would soon fade and become useless with the introduction of the canons D) There is no doubt that life in a any castle was safe but with restricted access to resources as well E) A castle without such natural defenses would be surrounded by a deep ditch, usually filled with water 4

5 By 2050, the world will host nine billion people - and that's if population growth slows in much of the developing world. Today, at least one billion people are chronically malnourished or starving. Simply to maintain that sad state of affairs would require the clearing of 900 million additional hectares of land. The bad news beyond the impacts on people, plants and animals of that kind of deforestation is that there isn't that much land available. At most, we might be able to add 100 million hectares to the 4.3 billion already under cultivation worldwide. In addition, agriculture accounts for at least 85 percent of human water consumption - a growing concern as aquifers diminish and hydrology changes in the face of climate change. And, humans now use some 171 million tons of nitrogen as fertilizer every year, much of which ends up polluting lakes, rivers, streams and even the ocean. And it's not like socalled organic agriculture is helping with that: Nitrate leaching into waterways can come from manure, as in the Netherlands or overuse of fertilizer, as in Iowa. The result is the same: dead zones. 36. In the passage it is said that agriculture --- A) is in severe need of water which could not be met by farmers B) is the only way that we can feed the growing population of the earth C) poses significant impacts on ecology by exploiting fresh water resources D) has nothing to do with the use of fertilizers and thus should proceed as it is E) has to be industrialized in order to fertilize land and increase crop yields 38. We can infer from the passage that ---- A) 100 million hectares of land are added to the agricultural cultivation each year B) the amount of arable lands may not be sufficient for future generations C) population growth and deforestation are slightly related D) lakes and rivers are the least effected water resources from industrial fertilization E) the world has reached to a point where it can no more feed its inhabitants anymore 39. It is made clear in that passage that malnutrition and starvation --- A) may become concerns of the coming decades unless we develop more food to feed people B) has never become so critical throughout the dawn of man C) are to be blamed for the overuse fertilizers and other industrial chemicals in agriculture D) are the natural outcomes of agricultural areas known as the dead zones E) are likely to add up in the coming decades due to the scarcity of arable lands 37. We understand from the paragraph that the writer A) calls for more reliable agricultural methods instead of the ones that are applied B) acknowledges the fact that we are exploiting resources on earth, but appreciates it as inevitable C) mainly centers on how to tackle with the annually growing population D) points out that nitrate use in agriculture be ceased as soon as possible E) believes that available land for cultivation has its limits 5

6 We all have heard quite a lot people claiming that our language is in danger and text messaging as well as social networks are destroying the mother tongue we ve enjoyed for generations. Before long, nobody will be able to speak or spell properly and nobody seems to care or so frustrated columnists and concerned technophobes tell us. Yet recent studies suggest that, if anything, the opposite is true, and all these new forms of communication are actually improving our language skills. Surely language has always been continually evolving since it first evolved all those years ago and that is exactly what is happening now. In fact, when and why people first begin to speak is a puzzle that has engaged some of the best brains, from linguists to evolutionary biologists, geneticists to anthropologists, yet we still don t have an answer. Think how much we know about the first few microseconds of the Universe, says University of Edinburgh s Simon Kirby. Yet we know almost nothing about how we came to have our most defining characteristic. It s kind of embarrassing how little we understand what marks our species out. Unlike other aspects of human evolution where we have fossil evidence, it is difficult to know with any certainty how language began. 42. As far as the writer is concerned, the evolution of language ---- A) is as puzzling as understanding how the universe came into being B) is a matter of academic study only which experts such as evolutionary biologists and geneticists should deal with C) comes innumerous varieties none of which have superiority over the other D) is a natural outcome that has contributive effects on the language E) is not as hard to conceive of as it is generally assumed 43. As we learn from the passage the mainstream belief over language is that According to the passage, the origins of human language ---- A) has been an academic challenge that even experts are trying to discover B) could somehow be related with the origins of the universe C) made so much appeal in academic circles that almost all linguists are challenging one another to find out a proper answer D) is impossible to study on in that there are not traces left by our ancestors E) would certainly shed light on what developments we may face with the evolution of our language A) social networks and text-messaging are two factors that help our langue evolve further B) we know nothing about how our language has evolved through time C) developments and changes in languages are just a normal process that they undergo D) there are threats to our mother tongue that derive from recent technological advances in communication E) a more conservative approach should be adopted when it comes to protecting our mother tongue 41. The irony implied in the passage is that ---- A) the langue used on social networks pose serious hazards for our mother tongues B) though we know how the universe originated, we have no concrete information about the that of the language C) language is progressively going though changes that are no always to keep up with D) our understanding of the formation of language has not evolved with recent trends E) studying languages is not as easy as it is usually thought 6

7 44. (I) Leading a healthy and happy life is what people have always longed for throughout their living. (II) Happiness isn t easy to quantify, but a lot of people have tried. (III) A report, commissioned by the United Nations Conference on Happiness has revealed several findings over it. (IV) Richer people, for instance, are happier than poorer people on average, but wealth is only one factor in overall happiness. (V) The same goes for countries, where factors like personal freedom, lack of corruption, and social support are more important over happiness. A) I B) II C) III D) IV E) V 46. (I) Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a movement that popularized the theory that unconscious motives control much behavior. (II) Initially, he became interested in hypnotism and how it could be used to help the mentally ill. (III) Yet, he later abandoned it in favor of free association and dream analysis in developing what is now known as "the talking cure (IV) Thus, Introduced by the eminent psychologist, the talking cure became a source of interest in academic circles. (V) Little is known of Freud's early life as he twice destroyed his personal papers, once in 1885 and again in 1907 A) I B) II C) III D) IV E) V 45. (I) With gas prices headed back up toward $4 per gallon nationally, interest in electric vehicles is on the rise. (II) It s a great start, but much remains to be done and the private sector will have to take the lead in identifying profitable, market-based business models for them. (III) Many governments, including China, the United States, and the European Union, have unveiled ambitious goals for electric vehicle production and penetration for the coming decade. (IV) These goals have industry and government researchers collaborating on the world s best electric cars and charging networks. (V) As the case in the U.S., the private sector has responded to policy signals by creating an innovation cycle for such vehicles and related infrastructure. A) I B) II C) III D) IV E) V 47. (I)The three water crises dwindling freshwater supplies, inequitable access to water and the corporate control of water pose the greatest threat of our time to the planet and to our survival. (II) Together with impending climate change from fossil fuel emissions, calamities as such impose some life-or-death decisions on us all. (III) Unless we collectively change our behavior, we are heading toward a world of deepening conflict and potential wars over the dwindling supplies of freshwater. (IV) Disputes between nations, between rich and poor, between the public and the private interest have been threatening global unity. (V) Further, if we are to make use of available resources efficiently, learning how to safeguard existing water resources is inevitable. A) I B) II C) III D) IV E) V 7
