1 International Projects College of Education PROPOSAL FOR International Inbound Short Course In "The secret is to work less as individuals and more as a team. As a coach, I play not my eleven best, but my best eleven." - Knute Rockne
2 This short course in is based on the Internationally recognized Bachelor of Degree taught over three years by the School of Sciences and Physical Education at the College of Education, University of Canterbury. The Bachelor of Sport (BSpC) is a qualification for people who wish to enhance their coaching knowledge and practice. It prepares students for a career in sport coaching and related fields. Using an athlete-centred approach, students are trained to provide opportunities for learning in the sport context. The programme provides a link between theory and practice, whereby students have supervised coaching practice with other students, sports clubs and schools. It also allows students to develop skills which can be useful in roles beyond coaching such as coaching co-ordinators for clubs; community groups and sporting federations; work in regional and national sporting organizations in various roles; sport development officers for community groups; sports co-ordinators in schools; sport trainers; mental skill trainers; exercise scientists; recreational officers and community educators. This course offers an intensive, four week summary of the core content of the BSpC and will focus on Exercises Sciences including Anatomy, Physiology, Motor Learning and Biomechanics, Psychology, Learning, Athlete Centred Leadership. The School has previously carried out other, intensive short courses in at national and international level, including recently for the High Performance Coaches of the national New Zealand Cricket Association. practice or Practicum will be a part of the course and will facilitate the development of critical thinking and self-reflective analysis using video of their coaching as a tool. Assessment of the development of the course participants will be based on the Practicum and a final presentation to the group and tutors. Course participants will also visit high-level sport and recreational facilities, to meet, observe and question current practitioners. Recreational visits to areas of cultural and scenic significance in the Canterbury region will also be carried out. Due to the demands for interaction with native English speakers during this course a degree of proficiency in English Language proficiency is required. The entry recommendation is IELTS 7 or equivalent.
3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE *To develop coaches who understand the practice and importance of holistic development. *To apply knowledge within an athlete centred approach. *To prepare coaches who are able to work up to international level. *To develop a broad knowledge of Science and Pedagogy. *To develop critical analysis and reflection on knowledge, practice and application of coaching Principles. SKILLS DEVELOPED DURING THE COURSE *Initiative and innovation. *Analysis, evaluation, reflection and conceptualization. *Flexibility and adaptability within changing sporting environments. *Critical reflection on current coaching practice. *Oral and written communication. *Quality leadership. *Ability to apply skills and interact with athletes from a diverse range of backgrounds and abilities. *Ability to analyse and evaluate one's own coaching and ensure quality outcomes. *Ability to plan and organize continued Professional Development. *Ability to understand and critically analyse the sporting environment. *Ability to understand administrative policies and procedures and ensure professional integrity. ACCOMMODATION DURING THE COURSE The University of Canterbury will organize accommodation for the duration of the course. This will be in Halls of Residence on the University campus with a self-catering or full-catered option. The University will also organize transfers to and from Christchurch International Airport.

8 Course ent Descriptors Introduction to : The necessary coaching and pedagogical skills to plan and implement successful coaching sessions. Learning: Equip participants to plan and implement quality coaching sessions that are appropriate to athlete learning characteristics, needs and concerns. Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology: Foundation understanding of anatomy and physiology as each relates to sporting participation and performance. Psychology: psychology theories and techniques used for maximising performance and satisfaction in sport. Athlete Centred : Conceptualize and evaluate the concept of athlete-centred coaching within an evolving coaching philosophy. Biomechanics: Provides knowledge of the structure and function of the mechanical principles governing movement, with an emphasis on human motion. Leadership: Looking at the interrelatedness of leadership, power and culture and the effects these factors have on a positive team and organisational environment. Exercise Science for Aerobic and Anaerobic : A comprehensive examination of the exercise science essential for coaching aerobic and anaerobic sport athletes
9 Accommodation costs will be $980 per person based on a 4 week stay in a University of Canterbury Dormitory at current prices; including $100 per student admin charge. This accommodation is selfcatering but a meal package option can be arranged at an additional cost.
