1 M. Robin DiMatteo, Ph. D. Distinguished Professor, Department of Psychology University of California. Riverside, CA Dr. M. Robin DiMatteo speaks and consults on the topic of health care delivery. Her goal is to assist medical systems to improve communication and treatment adherence, toward the goals of improving healthcare outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. For the past 30 years, Dr. DiMatteo has been a recognized expert on communication in medical settings. She studies how information is gathered and conveyed between providers and patient, and within medical teams, and how trust and commitment to treatment adherence can be built and maintained over the course of management of long term chronic disease regimens. She has developed a method of improving patient adherence that focuses on patients beliefs, behavioral constraints, depression, social support, illness severity, and provider-patient communication. She also examines the role of patients socio-economic vulnerabilities and health literacy in their adherence, and has developed and validated training programs for providers and patients to reduce communication gaps and to improve adherence. Dr. DiMatteo has published 8 books, 99 technical empirical journal articles, and 53 literature review book chapters, primarily on the topics of treatment adherence and medical communication, including studies of health literacy and the care of vulnerable populations. She has served the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force as a reviewer of the national guidelines for medical patient education, as a reviewer of medication counseling behavior guidelines for the United States Pharmacopeial Convention, and as a member of the National Advisory Committee for the American Academy of Physician Assistants. She is a reviewer of research journal articles for such outlets as the Journal of General Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine, Medical Care, The Archives of Family Medicine, Health Psychology, Psychological Bulletin, JAMA, and the Lancet. In the past five years, Dr. DiMatteo has delivered invited lectures and trained health care teams on improving treatment adherence and enhancing provider-patient communication at over 60 major medical centers. These include Harvard University, the Mayo Clinic, and the Cleveland Clinic, and she has worked with many group practices, Accountable Care Organizations, Employers Health Coalitions and nationally based Health Plans to improve medical care outcomes. Dr. DiMatteo received her B.S. in Mathematics and Psychology from Tufts University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. Currently, she is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside, and is a Licensed Psychologist in the State of California. She has served as Chair of the Department of Psychology at UCR, and as a resident consultant in Health Policy at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA. Dr. DiMatteo has been elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, of the American Psychological Association, and the Association for Psychological Science. She has received grant funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as an Investigator Awardee in Health Policy Research, and from the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Pew Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Dr. DiMatteo has received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California, Riverside, and is a member of the UCR Academy of Distinguished Teachers.
