3 FORWARD Alex Powell Senior Manager, Hays Construction The last 12 months have continued to provide the volatility we have all come to accept over the last four years. Vastly different demands have not only been driven out of different locations such as Christchurch in comparison to Wellington, but also within the same location such as Auckland where we have seen a number of construction companies expanding and others retracting. This inconsistency has had a direct effect on salaries and packages with divergent results. There have been greater increases in the salary levels associated with companies building in the industrial sectors and those involved in smaller projects as these parts of the market continue to release projects. In Auckland the much anticipated recovery of the residential market will see house builders and land development companies recruiting tradespeople and supervisory staff, small pockets of growth are already starting to be seen within this sector. Unsurprisingly, Christchurch has experienced an increase in salary levels for junior and mid level roles such as Site Managers and Intermediate Quantity Surveyors, whilst for senior roles there has been little change over the last year. This is clearly indicative of what roles and disciplines are under significant pressure. At the request of several NZIOB members this year, we have included a breakdown between base salary and package. This has been compiled for the location table only and all other tables remain base salary only. Please bear in mind that the package is based on a respondee s interpretation of their overall package so should be viewed in this light and used as a general guideline only. It is positive to see that business confidence is steadily increasing with 42 per cent of respondees believing the general economic outlook will strengthen over the next 6-12 months compared to 33 per cent last year. We are seeing a positive change and more optimistic future for the industry and hence the results of the 2012 survey will produce particularly interesting and useful data. The response from the industry to the salary survey has always been excellent, particularly since the survey has been managed electronically. The 2012 guide will be an invaluable tool for construction industry professionals for both career and business planning. The results provide crucial information of interest to all building and construction industry companies and professionals, to benchmark salary and remuneration package structures and implement effective staffing strategies to hire and retain qualified and competent building and construction staff. In addition, the sector commentary provides a valuable snapshot of the current New Zealand construction industry job market.
