1 DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS The Department of Physics is an undergraduate program emphasizing instruction in contemporary areas in basic and applied physics as articulated within the various concentrations detailed below. Each of these leads to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in physics, and require a minimum of 120 credit hours. A Minor in Physics is also offered requiring at least 21credit hours in basic courses (PHYS: 116, 152, 217, 218, 247, 251, 252, 272, 5), with the department s approval. Currently, the department is housed in various offices within Trailers #9 - #12, adjacent to the Bell Building (i.e. the Registrar s building), and in the New Science Building. The Labs are housed within the Nabrit Science Building. The Chair is located in Trailer # 9. Students are encouraged to peruse various physics websites that can offer them a more comprehensive view of the intellectual, professional, and employment opportunities that physics offers. Important sites include the department s web site, ; that of the American Physics Society (APS), that of the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP), and that of the National Society of Hispanic Physicists (NSHP), In light of the importance of the Health Physics program, potential majors should also consult the web site for the Health Physics Society at Students in any of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields should also reference the Society of Physics Students at The study of physics will produce graduates with exceptional problem solving capabilities impacting all professional areas particularly those STEM fields. The successful graduate will possess advanced quantitative skills in mathematics and computation, and an understanding of the fundamental laws of nature from the classical through the quantum realm. It is the program s objective to produce competitive graduates who can either directly enter the workforce or continue onto graduate programs in any of the STEM areas. Competitive physics majors have the opportunity to pursued undergraduate research with some of our distinguished faculty, most of which are actively engaged in forefront research including mathematical physics, atomic and molecular physics, computational physics, computational quantum chemistry and nano materials, quantum chaos, quantum computing, nuclear physics, health physics, medical physics, etc. In addition to the Concentrations (Tracks) defined below currently offered at TSU, articulation agreements are being presently developed between TSU and other institutions expanding the academic offerings available to physics majors. Of particular importance is the existing relationship with the University of Texas at Brownsville (TSU-UTB) which offers one of the most competitive programs in Astrophysics, by international standards. Their primary area of expertise is gravitational wave astronomy (supported through the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy, which will continue to be an important area of research for many years to come. Requirements for the B.S. in Physics are summarized below, and within each concentration area. Depending on the area of concentration, different levels of departmental review and permission are required. Students may elect either the two semester calculus based physics sequence Physics for Engineers (i.e. PHYS 245 and 246, with Labs PHYS 215 and 216) or the calculus based three semester sequence University Physics I III (i.e. PHYS 152, 251, 252 with Labs 116, 217, and 218). The second is strongly recommended, particularly for students with weak advanced mathematics backgrounds (i.e. multidimensional calculus, vector calculus, linear algebra, etc.). Each declared physics major/minor will be assigned an advisor. All semester course loads must be approved by their advisor. In all cases, students must adhere to the course sequences (i.e. prerequisites and co-requisites) enumerated within the various concentrations. This is because the curriculum is structured in a mutually supporting manner (i.e. different courses build upon each other and prepare students for future courses, particularly those placing high demands in advanced mathematics). Physics majors are not required to have a minor, because the scope of our program offers significant immersion in advanced mathematics and scientific computing. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) mandates certain core courses. In fulfillment of this, during the first semester, physics majors will take PHYS 101 Principles of Physical Science which provides a broad overview of the physical universe and serves to give the student a general understanding of the different areas of science impacted by physics. Students must earn grades of C or better in all courses specific to the major or minor (i.e. physics and mathematics courses). During the fifth and sixth semester, most of the concentrations require students to take modern physics and quantum mechanics.

2 It is the intention of the physics program to offer online versions of all courses, as well as evening sections, when necessary. This should enable students to prosecute their studies, and graduate on time. Students transferring to the University are cautioned that Physics credits transferred from other colleges and universities must be evaluated by the Department before being used to fulfill requirements for the major/minor in Physics. These credits may or may not be acceptable. If these credits are judged to be unacceptable, students may be able to use them to fulfill core curriculum requirements, elective requirements, or both. There are many scholarship opportunities either through the University, the College (i.e. the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP), etc.) and the department (UT-Austin led consortium in Health Physics sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, and anticipated scholarship awards from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), to name a few). Research stipends are available through individual faculty depending on their research grants. Concentration Areas At the time this document was prepared, the tracks specified below (each leading to the B.S. degree in Physics) were proposed for adoption by the University. All of the Concentrations emphasize the same basic curriculum through the first four semesters. During this period, students advanced mathematics and computer programming skills are developed in parallel with their progression through physics. Admission requirements for the different concentrations are indicated below. B. S. in Physics (General Studies) The objective is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the basic physics principles governing the Universe, from the classical to quantum realm. Students pursuing this track are expected to pursue graduate studies (i.e. M.S., Ph.D.) in any of the STEM disciplines. When compared to other similar programs nationally, this track places great emphasis on acquiring competitive skills in advanced mathematics and computer programming. There is a proportional increase in the number of physics credit hours (i.e. approximately 49). This is done to make up for students lack of advanced math, and physics exposure, in high school. However, the total number of credit hours required is 120. Students are expected to maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 in all physics and mathematics coursework. There are 8 credit hours of Free Electives. B.S. in Physics (Health Physics, Physics Option Professional Track) Health Physicists protect human beings, and other living organisms, from dangerous exposure to radioactive and/or radiation sources. They can be found at nuclear power plants, medical facilities, government labs, industries, military facilities, etc. It is a high demand profession where the successful graduate (particularly those that become certified) can earn six figure salaries with a B.S. degree. Excellent math skills are required, as well as an understanding of physics from classical to modern (quantum) physics. Specialized courses in dosimetry, radiation detection, nuclear physics, etc. are required. This particular track places great emphasis on a thorough grounding in the physics of Health Physics. This track is intended for individuals who intend to become researchers in Health Physics, in addition to doing field tests to monitor safe working conditions. The number of credit hours in physics courses in approximately 68. The total number of credit hours is 126 because of the emphasis on graduates being able to enter the professional workforce upon graduation. Students can pursue advanced study in graduate school; however, the course of study specified below is sufficient for students to find competitive employment upon receiving the B.S. degree. Acceptance into this concentration requires approval from the Director of the Health Physics program. Students with an overall GPA of.0 or better in all physics and mathematics coursework through the first five semesters will be considered for competitive scholarships supporting their remaining studies. Students are expected to maintain a.0 GPA in the physics courses during the remaining semesters to remain in good standing (i.e. not lose their scholarships). The department is developing close ties with leading graduate programs in health physics/sciences (i.e. UT-Austin, Texas A & M College Station, The University of Texas Health Science Center, etc.) that may facilitate the transfer of successful majors into these M.S./Ph.D. granting institutions.

3 B.S. in Physics (Health Physics, Bio-Option Professional Track) This track is similar to the previous one (i.e. Health Physics, Physics Option Professional Track) except that there is greater emphasis on students being exposed to Biology courses. In particular 2 credit hours of Biology courses in human anatomy, physiology, cell structure, radiation biology, etc., are emphasized. As of the time this document was published, a proposal that these 2 credit hours be accepted as a Minor in Biology was still under consideration. The physics exposure provided is intended for students to have a working knowledge of the basic concepts from the classical to the quantum realm. There is a minimal level of immersion in advanced mathematics. Required concepts in differential equations, linear algebra, etc. are developed within the Math Methods courses PHYS 247 and 248, although Calculus I and II are required. This track is intended for individuals more interested in field work and not basic research in physical science aspects of Health Physics. Also, it can support the interest of students considering careers in Medical Physics or Radiology. Students maintaining a.5 GPA or better, in all physics, mathematics, biology and chemistry courses, during the first five semesters, will be considered for special scholarships supporting their remaining two years of Health Physics courses. Students must maintain a.0 GPA in all physics courses during the last two years in order to retain this and any other scholarship. B.S. in Physics (Mathematical Physics) This concentration emphasizes a high level of training in advanced mathematical and computational physics. Students in this concentration are expected to continue onto the Ph.D. in physics, or applied mathematics, at the elite universities; however, some may be eligible for immediate employment in industry and government in areas demanding computational modeling capabilities. Evidence of continued and increasing intellectual maturity is required for admission into this concentration. A senior level thesis is required (for two semesters), as well as participation in student led, senior year workshop/seminars. The number of credit hours required is 120. B.S. in Physics (Computational Physics) This track is similar to the previous one except that students are required to take 20 credit hours of prescribed electives within the Computer Science department. This track is ideal for students interested in physics but wishing to pursue more computer oriented professions upon graduation. 5 PHYSICS COURSES PHYS 101 Principles of Physical Science (4) Survey of the physical sciences for non-science majors, including introductory physics, astronomy, and chemistry. Demonstrated math proficiency in basic algebra and geometry required. Three hours of lecture, and one hour of demonstrations per week. PHYS 116 University Physics Laboratory I (1) Laboratory, Demonstration, and Recitation course in support of PHYS 152. One three hour session per week. PHYS 151 Computational Modeling of Physical Systems (1) Mandatory for students majoring or minoring in physics. Key physics experiments are used to develop intuitive abilities in advanced mathematics (i.e. differential equations, multidimensional calculus, vector analysis, vector calculus, linear algebra, and scientific programming).
