1 TEACHING HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH How to Prepare! WRITTEN BY: LAURA MULVEY (FALL 2007) Office of Undergraduate Advisement Department of English Location: Humanities Phone: (518)

2 Becoming an English Teacher in Secondary Education Undergraduate Requirements When applying for graduate school to receive your master s degree in education, there are several course areas SUNY Albany requires you to have fulfilled before entering our graduate program. Below is a list of these requirements as an English major: English (minimum of 36 credits, minimum of B- in courses as well) One Course in American Literature (3) One Course in British Literature (3) One Course in Shakespeare (3) One Course in World Literature (3) One Course in Composition (3) (Fulfilled by the English major) One Course in English Grammar OR Linguistics (3) (e.g. Eng 216 or a Linguistics course) Additional English Courses (if all the above is fulfilled, a min. of 18 credits) -These can/should include courses in media, film, or technology. Praxis I tests and Applications (SUNY Albany Grad Program requirements, but can change depending on grad program and/or other graduate schools) Praxis I tests Your first step to the application process is to complete the Praxis I exams for entry into our graduate school. What is the Praxis I? The Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST) are designed to measure basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. These tests are given paper-based and computer-based. Paper-based exams are given on designated dates and locations. Computer-based exams are given weekly and at designated locations. They are also scored as pass/fail and can take up to 6 weeks to receive scores. You can register for both methods online at (there is a fee for each exam). This website can also tell you about the exams, exam dates, fees, scoring, etc. These tests should be completed prior to applying, but they do not have to be (recommended in the semester before graduation semester).

3 Applications Our application deadline is February 28 before graduation which also means recommendations should be handed in before this deadline. It is required to have 3 letters of recommendation 2 letters from professors, and 1 letter from any kind of supervisor. It is suggested to form a credentials file at the Career Development Office ahead of time to make the application process easier for you. The application can be downloaded on the Albany website. Graduate School at SUNY Albany Once accepted into the graduate program of education, you are ready to begin your journey towards your master s degree in roughly 1.5 years (Summer, Fall, Spring, Summer, Fall semesters 42+ credits). You are welcome to take the first summer off and begin in the fall, but you will have to take these 6 credits during the following summer session. Below are the various requirements in graduate school to receive your teaching degree: Student Teaching Student teaching is where you will be working in the classroom with another teacher for one full semester. Here, you will learn how the teacher works with students, have hands-on experience with several students, and gain knowledge into the workings of a secondary education classroom. This is usually completed during your last semester (fall) of your graduate program. Tests Content Specialty Tests (CSTs) This exam tests you on your knowledge of your subject area you wish to teach (e.g. English). This can/should be taken early in your graduate program since the course content is still fresh in your mind from your undergraduate studies. Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST) This is the next exam you will be required to take upon receiving your master s degree. It tests you mainly on you reading comprehension and should be taken towards the end of your graduate program. Assessment of Teaching Skills Written (ATS-W) This is the written portion of your certification skills tests and should be completed upon graduation from the grad program. Training/Fingerprinting School Safety and Intervention Training This is a required 2-hour training course that can be completed in a classroom or online that specializes in school violence and intervention.

4 Child Abuse Identification Training This is also a required 2-hour training course that can be completed in a classroom or online that teaches you how to recognize and report child abuse in the classroom. Fingerprinting Once you have received your master s degree, it is required to get a fingerprinting test done to do a criminal history background check. This is filed with the Office of Teaching in the New York State Education Department. Upon graduation from the master s program, you will receive your initial teaching certification, but this will expire in 5 years. To receive your professional teaching license, within those 5 years, NYS requires you to be a full-time teacher for at least 3 years. The state also requires 1 year of experience in mentored teaching. What this is exactly is when you are hired as a full-time teacher, the school you are hired from will normally provide you with a mentor (another available teacher in the school) who does not necessarily work with you in the classroom, but acts as a teacher to fall back on when you have any questions or concerns. This is only required for 1 year of full-time teaching and is included in the required 3 years of full-time teaching. If these requirements are fulfilled within 5 years, you will then receive your professional teaching certification for New York State. If certified in NYS, you are also able to teach in Connecticut and New Jersey as many teachers, in fact, do. Beyond Secondary Education Interested in furthering your education beyond teaching even high school? With a master s degree in education, you can become a professor at a community college or even teach a freshman class at a university. However, while doing so, you can work towards your Ph. D to become a professor at a higher level in a university. This normally takes 7 years, but many professors finish their Ph. D in 3 4 years. You would receive this degree in either education or English depending on what you would like to teach. If you would like to teach strictly English courses at the college level, you would get your degree in English. However, you could also receive your degree in education and teach educational theory, for example. The choice is yours!
