L'estensione è sempre preceduta da un carattere "." (punto) I sistemi operativi sono spesso in grado di associare ciascuna estensione al lancio di un programma che sia in grado di gestirla. Per esempio: "lettera.doc" identifica un documento che è stato chiamato "lettera" e che avendo un'estensione ".doc" è generalmente associato al programma Microsoft Word. In questo modo, facendo doppio click sul nome file il sistema è in grado di lanciare direttamente il programma, anzichè costringere l'utilizzatore ad aprire prima il programma e poi a cercare ed aprire il file dal suo interno. Il punto di domanda inserito nell'estensione dei file indica una qualsiasi lettera: es..??_ indica tutte le estensioni che terminano con un segno "_" come.ex_,.co_,.wa_, ecc.
